Comment on my playstyle please

Hi all. I'm not exactly new to this forum, but I stopped playing for about 2 years+ because I wasn't satisfied with H5 1.3

But yeah, ToTE was pretty appealing to me.

Ever since I started playing again, I couldn't even win a Hard game and I wonder what's wrong with my play. People here are talking Hard and Heroic like it's too easy, so please give me some pointers.

I use Haven, and I'm training Haven before I even intend to challenge anyone. I play Hard, 1v1 CPU and here's what I do:

Main/Starting Hero: Klaus
Starting bonus: Resource

Week 1:
Tavern, clear wood/ore mines
Peasant Huts
Town Hall
Archers'Tower
Blacksmith
Griffin's Tower
Mage Guild

Week 2:
Upg Archers Tower
Upg Griffin's Tower (clear area with Crossbowmen and Battle Griffins)
Fort
Cityhall
Citadel
Castle (if I can)
-build nothing-

That's as much as I can remember how I play and by the 5th week the CPU overwhelms me with 2-4 tier 7 creatures

Am I playing majorly wrong or something?

the IA is strong at the beginning of a game but weak at the end.
actually, once you manage to get a decent army, you can easily beat most enemies heroes and wandering armies (at least on hard, I haven't tried heroic)

if I remember well, haven is quite weak in early game (but very strong in end game, like dwarfs)
academy is very strong in early game with powerful spells and swarms of shooters.

with haven, I found that the griffins die fast (at least the imperial ones) well, of course they have pack dive, but if you are a beginner it may not be easy to use.

in another hand, the squire upgrades are slow, but extremly tough, I think one of them has like the highest chance to stun an enemy stack from all the creatures in the game.

if you can afford them, zealot and clerics are imo the best units in haven, because they are one of the last who get targetted, and they can use this time to shoot/cast spells.

On what map? Also build order means little compared to how you handle the skills/creeping/moving in the adventure map.

Btw I'm not convinced it is a serious map if you start at lvl 1 town. Normally a town you should start at lvl 3 with tavern, fort and lvl 1 dwelling.

Hmm, just tried another game against Sylvan, on Art of Strategies. Even at the mid-game, its armies still have the upper hand. I think it conquered some of the other smaller towns.

I just usually play the default ubi maps, starting with lv1 towns.

Isn't there a "serious" map that starts with town level 1 or 2 (fort prebuilt preferably)? Why is it so, does it give magic factions too big of an edge in early game or what?

Ugh... there's enough gold to recruit heroes weekly? 3k is really pain. And yes I upgrade the archers; they're worth it.

hi ambidext, just curious, where can i download this map "art of strategies?"

i think your playstyle is fine, but your choice of heroes is wrong in this case. if the ai can reach you in 5 weeks, you might consider vittorio or dougal as your main and then prepare for a castle battle(i.e. hire all the archers/peasants/footmen you can get with the ammo cart and ballista and hide in the castle, hoping that the AI attacks you there)

Ballista is the safest and easiest way in tough creeping maps.

I think maybe that's my problem. I can be really stubborn and un-versatile sometimes. I played Normal mode and could get like 100 Champions end-game... obliterating all in my path.

It convinced me that nothing beats Haven + Klaus in a resource rich map. Convert all your Priests into Champions and you're kinda unstoppable.

if I use Vittoro I wouldn't get used to Champions not under Klaus >.<

You should know that in a multi game even if the map is large you never get even close to such numbers

well, of course klaus won't be of much use if you get eliminated before you can buy a single champion.

you may consider dougal, but pray to not have to fight sprites to get your sawmill

I agree with Fauch about starting with dougal, though I dislike him, he can give you some early game ranged buff. Also, in Haven good offense, defense and creeping revolve around war machines, they help more then you may think. Buy Haven heroes every week to get a bonus to number of troops (plus get more hero lackeys). Build up to a Castle and when you see the enemy, send a lackey in to check the size, if its too big hide out in the caslte when the enemy comes for ya, and pound it with Haven's defense tactics. Or you could just hit them first, Haven can handle some awesome odds if the enemy isn't crazy good with magic...

Every map and diff has a different approach, so u say u are owned by a machine (read imagining Morpheu´s Matrix 2 speech) then u have to think out of the box, play to defend if u are not willing to change HEROE or TOWN.
Once u get the creatures and exp then u can measure ur ...emmmm... sword with the I.A.

Yes, this does seem "wrong"

I haven't won with haven on impossible yet [but haven't tried for ages even tho it's my fav...I'm no epxert but I will comment anyway]

If one wants to crawl before running, may try vittorio warmachines/flaming arrows as haven is weakest in beginning which is especially true against AI.  Once hero is higher level, the AI becomes less challenging

Ofc, everything is situational so it's just my opinion based on unknown...
- Blacksmith 1st wk seems outta place, not sure about mage guild either
- citadel/castle in 2nd wk without getting cavalier building is different to what I do
- griffin & upgrade costs much wood/ore that I can't normally afford
- Is your focus on getting as many crossbowmen & cavaliers as possible? [peasants/footmen are protectors/fooder & don't even worry about upgrading to squires/imp griffons till much later]
pei mentioned upgrade to crossbowmen early which is good (preferably 1st week)
- YOu must have a lot of gold & resources to get to castle without worrying about gold for building capitol first so I would imagine there's enough gold/resources for cavaliers in 2nd wk.  I only build peasant hut when I can't afford other better creature buildings due to not enough gold/resources but need to reach next town lvl to build eg. city hall/cavalier building.

Academy with havez/nur, sylvan with AAs, dungeon sinitar are much easier to try first vs AI than haven  ofc anyone can always prove me wrong

There is nothing wrong with using Klaus as your main. I'm curious to know what skills you pick or go for though because these are the choices that really matter.

Early game Haven can benefit a lot from a hero with Divine Guidance for instance.

Crossbowmen are good but without a hero who can get them to shoot more often they won't make such a difference when facing larger neutral stacks or enemy heroes.

Later on Divine Guidance on champions can be good still.

Fast creeping is needed to get as many resources as possible because training costs an arm and a leg. If you try and train Champions or Paladins you won't have enough zealots and Inquisitors left for them to be of much use so getting some other creatures from a captured town or a dwelling may be a valid option.

Klaus starts with Retaliation Strike and Basic Attack so you have many options that are opened to you. His bonus to Retaliation Strike and Jousting damage are not bad at all. I suggest you use the Skillwheel to see what skills and abilities you'd rather pick (first choices, second choices and skills you skip), that would be useful information in order to help you improve your game.

I have a feeling that judging by the build order and talk of lack of gold the op is using chests for xp for hero rather than gold?  And Especially with Haven after lv3-4 this is a huge mistake.

I dont know Art of Strategy, a good player from ubi.com should give proper answer, but in general I think that you should not build blaksmith only if you get war machines at first levelups.

Building and upgrading griffin tower is a waste of resources, 2 cavalier is much better than 5 upgraded griffs.

I would replace griff building with mage guild 2, because if you can get regeneration you dont need war machines, all you need is two cavaliers and light magic. In a long run war machines will be a wasted skill, if you manage to creep without it.

UPG crossbows is essential, you can kill all walkers with crossbows and few peasants as blockers (but attention, slow blockers may cause a suicide when neutral get a morale).

I personally do not build lvl 3 guys nor griffons only after capitol, castle, cavaliers and angels. Usually I think upgrading angels are more important than to build lvl 3 and lvl 4.

Only in resource-paradise I build them.

Destro made a valid comment about getting gold out of the chest rather then exp, that would help out early gold issues, nevertheless in the impossible games I've played gold seems to be lesser of the evils I'm trying to deal with.
