humour of might and magic
when I look at heroes might and magic, I see a turnbased strategy game set in a generic fantasy world. nothing wrong within itself but the last bit is a bit boring isn't it?
Generic fantasy world. elves live in trees, dwarves under mountains, humans are followers of light, orcs are barbarians. they all come together to fight the big evil at the end.
you know what I think?
why can't we use this setting to spoof, poke fun at, ridicule and emasculate the generic fantasy world!
now come on, I am quite frankly sick of having fantasy games with all the same settings and cliches, we need something to take the piss out of them.
per example. you walk up to a town, it looks heavily fortified, and you go inside. there's no-one there, and the residents have left a not "Gone to pub, be right back". about 5 turns later, they return to the town and start attacking you.
alternatively, you meet a leprechaun.
"Top o'the morning to ya, laddi-buck. you've seemed to o' caught me an now i'll have to give you my crock'o gold!"
you suffocate the little stereotype before he can infect anybody else.
Alternatively, you could have a cutscene where a necromancer and a warlock are arguing over which faction appeals to goths the most.
stuff like that. and for a climax, the big battle at the end is lost by the good guys cause they couldn't pull together and work, meaning that the studio had to resort to playing "Badger Badger Badger" as a way to please the fans.

That's actually my biggest peeve with the new Heroes games! Heroes II and III were full of humor and little jokes that NWC threw in. Heroes II had an entire map based off Alice in Wonderland, while in Heroes III there were humorous signs and events everywhere. The games poked fun at things all the time.
Heroes V doesn't have any of this! Aside from maybe the week descriptors, there's none of this humor scattered around that I've seen. I miss that more than anything, and I'd love to see it back.

As I told you, unless you're referring to Heroes V (which is in a generic fantasy world), you're not looking hard enough. If you go and play the campaigns and Might and Magic games, which contain the actual storyline, you might think twice about calling it cliched.
And if you think there's never been any humour in HoMM, I have two words for you: Foolhardy Waywardness

Well I too miss the old humor and quirkiness in V. Heroes III was not really generic. But V has a great battle system; there are few improvements left to be made to it that I can think about and they are probably just changes that would suit me better and annoy other people.
