Seriusly, I don't get certain users' attitude towards this thread, people who post such trolling messages as:

"If you love Heroes II so much, go and install it already." or

"What's the matter? Can't find your Heroes II installation disc anymore?" and such other verbalizations of repressed personalities.

I for one liked Heroes II (although my favorite remains Heroes III) so I will definetly try this mod. And as Dj (very accurately) stated this is more of a fusion between Heroes II and III. It is not just a change of defs. It has new town lineups, changed creature balances etc. In fact, due to the fact that it relies mostly on Heroes II, I deem it a Heroes II mod.

I already figured out MY course of action. When this mod is finished I will copy Heroes III in another folder, install this mod there and make a new WOG shortcut (named Heroes_II(WOG).exe).

This way I get to keep Heroes III WOG and (when I feel like it) revisit the simpler times of Heroes II

I am also in existential dilemma about this mod.

For me, extreme graphics or creatures changes must come with an interesting story and a map, or in best case, a campaign. I salute the brilliant skill of modders but also I am asking: what is bringing to the gameplay and why?

If I want Heroes II, I play it. Now give me your reason why should I open H3 and see H2 instead. If you make a campaign and the story tells how the kingdom of Erathia collapsed and Lord Ironfist and Archibald are back into business, I will be at least curious. Right now I see only old graphics and not a single valid idea behind this change.

the idea of this mod is simply, give to lost heroes 2 a new rebirth.. all of us( the people that is making the changes) loves the game.. because we grew up with then we try to play the heroes 3.. and 4 .. 5 .. and not.. itīs not the same... maybe are a lot of people that did the oposite... and the old graphics are an inconvenient.. but the real back is the charism of the game.. heroes 3 ..(for us) doesnīt have that attribute.. and for the moment including the new version for wog.. 3.58.. 59..60 and others.. will never have charism... what is the charism?... many things.. sounds striking.. friendly music.. interesting and balanced factions, many rewarding battle moments.  including a coherent death sequence( castle units die and fallen ? what is this.... the flyers donīt fly to the other battle side?.. thatīs the idea.
however heroes 2 for us has many problems and shortcomings( poor speed rating, some spells are only a upgrade version of others , some monsters must have an evolution,  damage range is too short and will more if you include a new monster in the list, a few secondary habilities really useful .
heroes 3 have a better engine that heroes 2 this is questionless.. this is the motive( more information, more options, more alternatives to create a fun game. f.e a inventory with a unique weapon on the hand).but the game doesnīt provide entertainment..
is easy to create a game with a lot of previous conceptions... medusas in the underground and dragons.. a magic castle on snow with a nagas that donīt live in water or something and genies. griffins, humans and angels, friends? cerberus was unique.. in heroes 4 and 5. is more different but the correct order is subjetive.. we prefer the heroes 1-2 order ...  2 types of heroes for faction?  why?.. now the might( a stronghold) can be magic ... we choose a excludent thing...and a ton of ideas that we considered bizarre... elementals can be summoned and recruited in a castle and other nonexistent (magic,psy,ice).. incredible... all rainbow colors  now are dragons.. the golden goose or grial... ultimate sword of dominion
the campaing doesnīt interesting for now. rather is a annex. because the simple play is the atractive of the game.
heroes 2 is very different to this mod in more than 5 things, but the essence is the same.. or at least we try to do this.. if you like heroes 3, or in other words you are fan of the game,  like the cyclops throwing rocks, see a despised archmage, enjoy an archangel too powerful without a nemesis, earn a lot of gold,  .. probably you will never understand this project

Mister Kalu, in order to make this project perfect and interesting for players, you must; 1. give harpy back to Stronghold. The idea was awesome, and a city cannot simply live without a flying monster.

Wait, you mean he DID take the harpy out of stronghold? But... but that's silly. You're silly, mister kalu. Give it back.

But yea, the first heroes of might and magic game I ever played was numero tre, and that was at my friends house. I loved it so much that when I got heroes 1, 2 and 3 all in one pack from my parents, I was very, very happy.

Just a little background story about myself. Anyway, point is, I get all warm and nostalgic when playing heroes 3, same for heroes 4 but not as much (heroes 3 is just too old school), but I also have very fond memories of heroes 2. Just the fact that not every unit upgraded alone made me feel warm and fuzzy, and also the graphics were so old school I loved them =)

Anyway, this mod will be a success in my eyes even if I end up being the only one to play it. So a big FU to all haters, and keep up the good work Kalu!

Thank you Kalu, even if arguable, your points are interesting. Myself I played for a long time H2 and H3 and felt that the transition was smooth and realistic. Not the same between H3 and H4 or H5 still. Of course I don't agree that H3 has not charisma, as for WoG, it is not really a game, but a tool, so the charisma dimension is not required.
All your points about features could be addressed with simple WoG scripts in H3 as well, so I guess your ultimate goal are the H2 graphics, not really the game play. Again, it looks very professional.

This is phenomenal. I don't care whether we can boot up Heroes II any time, total conversions to newer engines are always welcome (have you ever heard of Baldur's Gate Tutu?).

I'd be happy to help recreate the Heroes II campaigns (and maybe make a few new ones) once there's a build ready for mapmaking.

Looks great. Can I ask you what program you used to record both video and sounds from game?

For passability you need ObjTxtEditor.exe, it comes with the last WoG version.

to record the videos,  usually  i use snagit 8 and i edit with virtual dub, for the file size basically.

HERE

Open with it ZEOBJTS.txt from data folder. When you want to change the passability for an object, delete the object name from ZEOBJTS.txt, now write again its name (myobject.DEF), change the passability in the right box, when done, CTRL+C to add it to the list. Save.
