Songs That Mean A Lot To Me

Songs that mean a lot to me.

Well it's basically as the title says. I'm just gonna list a bunch of songs and give explanations as to why they mean a lot to me.

Starting off is the song 'It's Over' by Electric Light Orchestra. For me, this song means a hell of a lot. My interpration of the song might differ from other peoples but this song, in a way, represents my life. Throughout my life I've been hurt so much. Everything good eventually comes to an end and 'It's Over'. It's a never ending cycle that I feel will never stop and this will just be the way my life goes. The song, essentially, is a love song (I think) but I just have a different impression of it and as such it means a lot to me and I can associate it with myself.

Next song is 'Games People Play' by The Alan Parsons Project. I interpret this song as people who like to play mind games with you, which is what a lot of people have done with me throughout my life, although I'm not as dumb as people think and I do realise what they're doing when they're playing mind games with me. It's just annoying, to say the very least, how people you think you can trust do snow like that to you. That's why I trust very little people and therefore this song has some relevance with me.

Next song is 'God Only Knows' by The Beach Boys. This song is kind of depressing and you can feel it when you hear the lyrics. The singer himself must have been depressed when writing this. Nevertheless, I often feel this way when I get to the lowest point in my life (which happens often). The lyric "What good would living do me" is something I can strongly relate to and something I question myself with a lot. What good am I alive? Who knows. I don't believe in myself very much and don't value my life at all. So this song hits quite deep with me and I really can relate to the lyrics.

Next one is 'Wouldn't It Be Good' by Nik Kershaw. Great song and I often think about the lyrics. Wouldn't it be good if... is something I question myself. I can't have it all and this song really shows that.

Next one is 'Shattered Dreams' by Johnny Hates Jazz. Kind of self explanatory by the title of the song, but yeah, a lot of my dreams have been shattered. I think I set my goals too high and too unrealistically, and in the end, that's had a bad result. Sometimes I expect too much as well, and I get shattered when those expectations are not realised.

Next one is 'Goodbye Cruel World' by Pink Floyd. You can kind of guess why this song means a lot. I often think about this when I get depressed (which happens a bit).

Anyway, those are the most notable ones I can think of. I also think that with realising these things, I can see how it's made me into the person I am today, why I have so much anger in me, because of all the hurt I've experienced. I'm sure a lot of other people have experienced a lot worse, but yeah.

So what songs mean a lot to you and why?

Wow, that's heavy, dude.

There are lots of songs that make go all "that's exactly what I feel", but I can't remember most of them now.

One that I do remember is "I am (Im ME)" by Twisted Sister. With lyrics like "Who are you to look down at what I believe?" it's pretty much self-explanatory. I am my own man, with my own habits and goals and I really don't give a damn what everyone but my closest friends think about that.

I'll add more as I remember them.

On top of it and without thinking much (and since this is pretty interesting I'll post more when I've had time to think about it).

Neil Young - My My Hey Hey
This is of course because of the great line "it's better to burn out than to fade away (my my hey hey)" which I like a lot better than The Who's "Hope I die before I get old" from My Generation. It features a couple of orther good lines like "(hey, hey, my, my)Rock'n'Roll can never die". Of course text means nothing without music - at least to me -, and the hymnic music is very fitting.

Another Neil Young song that makes me nod with my head is "Rockin' in the Free World" which features the sarcastic verse:
"We got a thousand points of lightz
for the homeless man
we got a kinder gentler machijne gun hand
we got department stores and toilet paper
styrofoam garbage for the ozone layer
got a man of the people, says, keep hope alive
got fuel to burn, got roads to drive."

Neil Young has a very simple way to write lyrics that is pretty powerful.

For a really great song text I advise to take a look at Crime In The City which is simply a great somng to listen to due to the stuff Young is singing.

The 3rd song I'll mention at this point is Dead And Gone by Motörhead, which is an incredibly sad-beautiful song about loss and getting old, about things gone bad and memories, with the refrain:

"Out of the night comes a song that I know
Twisted and ruined and black.
I can remember the people they were,
Nobody knows if they ever come back.
Lost in the ashes of time they still sing,
Echoes of romance gone bad.
I can remember them better than you,
I shared the nightmares they had.
Dead and gone, dead and gone.

I honestly don't know if any songs mean that much to me.  I know some touch me, move me, and I identify with (with or without reason).

The ones that I have to say would probably come closest is "Love lift us up where we belong." and "Take these broken wings."

I am a firm believer in 'love thy neighbor' and think that if people loved more the world would be a much much better place.

As for Take these broken wings..I guess I have always thought that I have fallen short of my potential.  Because I always strive to better myself.  No matter how bad things get, I pick myself back up and try again.

Songs that mean a lot to me are:

Jimi Hendrix: Star Spangled Banner and Machine Gun
because the instrument says more than a thousand words. When I saw Hendrix play Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock (on film) I had to cry because it was so darn beautiful. I know it sounds crazy, because it's not sounding beautiful, but it sounds every note like it is intended to sound, and it just was awesome.
Machine Gun is basically the same effect, but in a song written by Hendrix. It really motivated me learning to play guitar - ELECTRIC guitar.
However, Hendrix has written a lot of really great songs.
Castles made of Sand is really moving, sad like... well.
All Along the Watchtower is one of my alltime greastest.

Frank Zappa - Black Napkins
What guitar playing and composing is all about. Do yourself a favor and listen to that. The version on Zoot Allures is great, but Zappa's son Dweezil is playing it as an encore nowadays and it's marvellous.

Michael Jackson - Beat It
Strong contender for best guitar solo on a single - ever. Eddie Van Halen has done a lot to Rock Music and the solo on Beat It is pure genius at work. If I hear that song it's always a reminder how simple and short genius can be.

Who the hell wrote this ****ed up post? I think I might know but whatever.

Good posts people.

I've recently bought the Pink Floyd album 'The Wall'. I had some of their songs on my computer but I decided to buy the album as well. This albm means a lot to me because it deals with things that I go through such as depression, isolation, loneliness etc. I go through a lot of loneliness and I really do feel isolated from a lot of other people and feel they do not understand me and all.

The Pink Floyd album 'Animals' also means a lot to me because the lyrics are very true. If you know what the songs are about then you'll know why.

Remembered another one that is close to my heart. I'm sure Azzie would like it as well.

Breakthrough by Queen. If you would listen to the song the lyrics pretty much say it all. For those that are to lazy I'll quote the bridge:

If I could only reach you,
If I could make you smile,
If I could only reach you,
That would really be a breakthrough - oh yeah.

Sometimes that is all a man can wish for...
