What games are most similar to HoMM?

I've heard Age of Wonders is similar. And Warlords. What are the differences?
And what are some other similar games?

Most TBS games are similar to HoMM in one way or another, just like many 1st person shooters are somewhat similar too each other.

Kings Bounty probably most of them all. Aimed at singleplayer campaign, but the game experience is very similiar.

Hammer of the gods -> extreme resemblance in many parts of the game

It has more potential than Heroes games, tbh (especially the aiming system and the blocking system which were just fun)

Civilization isn't that similar to HoMM. The similarities between FPSs are much greater than those among TBSs.

Civilization is at the other spectrum of TBS games, I agree, but even it has some similarities, because they are what defines a TBS. I said that most TBS games will be similar to HoMM, because in my eyes warlords and AoW are not that close to it and even more so disciples, but if you consider them close then everything is close.

Disciples is the closest I've played. At least it's the closest I can think of off the top of my head.

I know in the past a lot of people on here talked about AOW, but I thought it sucked pretty bad, and I thought it was much further from Homm than Disciples.

I always thought of Civ as a completely different type of game. Even though it's turned based I consider it much closer to AoE than a TBS.

Actually, Age of Wonders has a lot of similarities to HoMM, but then again, some elements are completely different. As for Disciples, let's see after #III comes out, as rumors go it will be eerily similar to HoMM in battle system and statistic display. But Disciples and Age of Wonders do have the one thing I wish was in HoMM: experience levels. In Age of Wonders, its just medals that give extra stats, I prefer the Disciples system, where the creature upgrades itstelf depending your choice of building.

But Age of Wonders has the similarity in Heroes that each hero has different abilities, but they can gain common abilities. They can ironically both carry seven other units apiece.

Don't forget Warlords IV : Heroes of Etheria.  Pretty darn close in many ways ( specially with patch 1.04 or 1.05 )

Age of Wonder and Disciples II

I have played a good deal of both Age of Wonders and Disciples II. They are both similar to the Heroes games. They are turn-based and you move heroes around with their armies. The second iteration of Age of Wonders is also similar, but I found it too challenging. The first iteration of Disciples is similar too, but its graphics are too outdated and Disciples II is much better in other respects.

I much prefer Heroes III and Heroes IV to either Age of Wonders or Disciples II.

Age of Wonders has some great features, but what makes it inferior is that battles are sometimes long and drawn out. There are too many units to move. The Heroes' battles are streamlined and more exciting.

Disciples II is better than Age of Wonders, for the same reason that Heroes is better than Age of Wonders. But Disciples (and that includes both Disciples I and II) is too simple. Heroes is more complicated and more interesting. Only if Disciples existed and Heroes did not exist would I be playing more Disciples. Now and then, however, I have an itch to play Disciples II. Its graphics are a colorful change of pace.

Presently I am playing Heroes V, but I want to play more of it before I compare it.

P.S. -- A few more words about Age of Wonders: Some of the battles take place on large maps, sometimes involving two or more of your armies. This means moving about many units across wide spaces. It becomes tedious and boring. Despite its simplicity I prefer even Disciples II. Heroes is the best of the three.
