A community map 2010

Goal/idea:
Well, last year's community map kinda sorta died. This time, we need to write a story FIRST and then build a map around that. Sounds reasonable?

The map will be made with a near-linear progression from section to section, with an event telling the player who made the section. In this way, the gameplay is much more streamlined. Once a player enters a section, stage, whatever, they can go around however they like within the limits of the scripts/map. Some stages will be revisit-able if they hold something important (Final boss, locked vault that you unlock later, important scripted building, etc.)

FOR PEOPLE WHO CAN'T SCRIPT ERM:
Just put a signpost/event in the place you want something to happen, and describe it. Our more talented users will do your wishes as best they can.

Each map section must be QUALITY CHECKED by an elected or appointed adviser. Offending map pieces will be sent back with a list of poor areas. If the errors are not corrected, another contributor will edit the section.

Feel free to change any plot elements if something is too cliché, and please flesh it out! Suggestions have been made for various plot elements. Remember: Every little contribution counts!

Work on the map's overall shape and area progression may begin as the plot elements can be put in later. However, please be aware that if you start customizing the map at this stage, your pieces will most likely be changed due to the story, please do not be alarmed!

Please choose which one you think is better so I (We) can start working on the locations!

How much I could support such project, I still have one "warning": a map is much easier to be done by a single mapmaker. A team is good if different tasks are spread among, i.e X is doing map, Y is scripting, Z is doing story. Designing a map by several people is like writing a book as team. It will complete faster, but have serious lack of unity, thus making quite impossible to apply final touch. But having the story before starting anything is a very good idea. Good luck

If I had never done a group type map before, this would be fun for me. But after having orchestrated Painted: The Misfit, I think I'll sit this one out. But for those who have never experienced such a project I say go for it. At least you can get some mapmaking experience  out of it and critique from fellow mapmakers.
This is a good proect for those who have never done much mapmaking before.

Well, Maybe I am not perfect in ERM Scripting, but I have lots of Defs (like half of thousand ) and I could make some specially for the map :3. I also have many new hero portraits. So maybe I could help.

Well, one person per job may occur if there are too few players. I will make sure that everyone co-operates to write the story. I will  have an outline up soon.

EDIT: ByteBandit, I don't know how Painted: The Misfit was organized, but this will be different. I might even grid the map. I saw what happened to the last community map on HC. It died because the person writing the story stopped, and everything else fell apart. Also, the map came before the story. It will be the other way around now.
Mitabrin, you don't have to script. We can find someone experienced to do it for you, just place an event or signpost with the details. If the scripter can't do it, they'll suggest an alternative. Trust me, this will work.

Painted: The Misfit had something like over 30 people involved with it. From mapmaking to scripting and just about everything else in between it was no cakewalk. The trick is to stay on top of the one current map at all times, so one does'nt get lost as to where the project is headed.
It may be good to have many people add their touch to the map first. Then, even if the map is only 60 or 70 per cent done, you or many can write a story for it. It's hard to write first without knowing how the map is going to play around the story. And scripting, believe it or not, should be last. SImply because you are not sure what you really need for the outcome you are trying to achieve.
And along with the scripting process, you can tweak creature stacks and semi test the map, all at once.
It's the formula I used for PTM and seemed to work well that way with so many people involved. From it's conception to release, PTM took around 1 1/2 years.
Only a suggestion.

I have made some scripts which allow testing and tweaking the creatures/AI in real time play. Means you test the map once, click on some boxes, change whatever you want, then it is done. No more "that monster is too strong", I have to restart again after changing its strength. Also you can remove red tiles in real time, by clicking on them. Useful when you are middle game but can not pass further because some passability error. The only flaw it has is that can't write story.

I will share them when map will be done, not before

This map will be created layer by layer.
1) Preliminary story
1a) Critical reader quality check
2) Map design
2a) Design checking
3) Story integration into map
3a) Story integration quality check
4) Final map design tweaks
5) Story changes
6) Scripting
7) Story tweaks to fit in with the scripted events
8) Quality map-test
9) Public release.
This is a rough estimate of the order of making the map.
P.S.: People, please download and flesh out the outline of the story! Even if you don't want to participate, the map will never get on its feet without a story!

I need contributors right now, not management advice. That can come later.
THINGS I NEED PEOPLE TO DO RIGHT NOW:
Download the storyline outline, change it, flesh it out, and upload their version.

Not to offend anyone, but the way you represent the project and yourself would not make me join this. It's just, you state the project, and then 'I need this, I need that, I need this done, I need people to do that, why is no one helping me?'
I know you probably don't intend to come over as a bossy guy, but based on what I read, I can only agree with pei's reply.

Perhaps next time, you could first find people to help you, and then start with a plan.

Again, do not take this post as offensive in any way. I'm just trying to give constructive criticism.

I have a plan. The plan is to put together one map with the community. However, this plan will not work without co-operation from said community. First, the community needs to help me write a story-line. I have already made a general plot outline, and am asking for help fleshing out/changing that outline. So far, I have one person (Corribus) who has agreed not to help write, but to be a reviewer. I have stated the needs of my project quite clearly. Yet no-one is helping. That is the source of my frustration, my friend.
EDIT:
I'm desperate for contributors. Please help. I won't be so bossy if people actually cared!

The problem of this thread is at "my" as ayreon said before...You have to say if it's yours or if it's community's...if it is yours then do it yourself...if not then I believe you should first wait to see if there is interest...

Anyway...I would like to help, but unfortunately, I have really little free time in my hands...

It is "my project" because I am the project co-coordinator.
Anyway, it only takes a few minutes to download and write a few sentences on the story-line outline. I'm not asking each person to write a novel.

Here is how I see the whole thing: the fact that people accuse Vancho of peanuts is only poor excuses and pretexts for not getting down to work.

Now the question is: why do it? Is there a support, rewards, assistance and attention from the entire community? I remember the last attempt to build a common project has received no encouragement or QP from the owners/mods.

Yes, okay, it is only a map, is it worth a QP?

Maybe not, maybe yes. But sometimes the little boost is going through small gestures at first sight unimportant. It is not the QP itself that bring inspiration or polish the whole work but the symbol that represents: support for the primary purpose of these forums: improving Heroes. If still is it one

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I try to understand what you are saying.
You are saying that I accuse him of "peanuts?" because I'm trying to find excuses for not working on his project? If so, you are terribly wrong.

And I don't think one will start such a project because of a QP. This forum is not about QPs (or is that the only reason why you make maps?). Especially a community map is a project that is aimed for the fun of creating a map with more than just one maker.

Did not want to sound offensive Ayeron. Only to point out that if people feel no motivated, a small boost could help. I agree also that Vancho could at least create something before asking for help, as Vlaad did. But you noticed that the thread turned fast into Vancho bashing, did he really deserved it?

@Me: there are faster ways to get red stars than working 8 months/x hours a day for one. Not care about because between me and Heroes it is a long history. 12 years. If 3.59 is not coming out this year, I will certainly stop working on WoG and move elsewhere as I did all that could be done with 3.58.

That's why I didn't answer in this topic at all

Well, seriously speaking, I'm in the same state as Kesnar, I don't have time at all now, I'm already working on a game for school (yes, I do ).
I just didn't see the point to post the reason why I can't join the project reight now. That could have sounded like I'm looking for excuses (I understand what Salamandre means here ).

I have a plan for a map too, but I wanted to wait for HotA release to start it... So I just keep delaying it.

I love creating maps, even if I often don't finish them for various reasons. This project is exactly what I need, since I may need motivation. I'll be able to start something valuable in mid-january though, not before.

Let's see what will be the status at this time.
