There are other things as well that have been sent, but this is one of the most aggravating things. Though, there's also been a company that allowed you to send your calls to deep space at the price of a phone sex conversation.

Well... if some outsiders sent me a commercial of some glowing blue extraterrestrial munchies, I'd be like "Hells yeah!"

But what if they don't have the concept of a commercial?

What if they think it's some kind of demonstration of our mind powers?

I think the potential differences in perception are overestimated (granted, it's ultimately all theory).

They exist in the same universe as us, thus the physical laws are the same. If they have the technology to pick up the signal at all, I'm sure with the worst case scenario, they would be confused. But they'd realize it was from alien outsiders, so it's not like they'd judge it strictly according to their cultural norms.

I think you underestimate them

Even computers are vastly different from us, now imagine aliens who may not be biological or mechanical.

Well first they have to decode it, which I doubt they will -- considering their "TV standards" may not be the same. (heck if it's digital that's even less of a chance).

What a coincidence, the dorito people just happened to live in Ursa Major!
Though, it will take a while (79 years) before the signals reach that place.

EDIT: lol @ adrius

Which according to our current understanding of the universe; there are no such creatures. There are millions upon millions of species that exist and have existed on this planet, and not one of them is crystalline, gaseous, or some other exotic composition. They are all biological, one way or the other, and they have sensory organs that make them capable of interacting with their environment.

They exist in the same universe, thus they are bound to the same laws that we are bound to, and they will grow accordingly. The challenges of communicating with them will likely be no greater than the challenge of communicating with a hypothetical intelligent race of octopi in the ocean depths on this planet.

Sorry, that just made me LOL hard.
You do realize that other planets, solar systems and galaxies even have completely different conditions? On a single condition, one solar system, one galaxy, one planet, we have biological and "mechanical life" as we know them (or we'll know, in the future that is). This gives quite some ideas how different life can be in millions of other configuration of conditions.

Here let's try a few things: life in extreme temperatures (as how we're used to), in extreme gravity conditions, or where most materials are melted, or frozen, or w/e. Add to that the huge amount we don't know about the Universe -- "macro" world, even less more 'micro' stuff (i.e individual planets) and you've got yourself a huge statistical pool of different possible life forms.

EDIT: Saying that "on Earth, we only have 'biological' life, thus all life would be biological" is like saying "on Earth, we've got a planet with atmosphere, therefore all other planets have atmosphere". Of course you've got that on Earth, I mean, you're talking about it.
