Quote: Still, it's pretty revolutionary. I've never heard of a game where the choices in the 1st game carried over to the sequel.
Wizardry beat Mass Effect 20 years ago. So snow your revolution!
Anyway, I still am a huge BioWare fan and my pal keeps telling me about how awesome BioWare 2 is so I guess I gotta go out and buy it. And he has checked and found out that alot of things plays out diffrently depending on what choices you did in ME1(he has made three different playthroughs with three different imported characters so far and is doing a fourth one as we type).

Your actions in ME1 doesn't really matter that much, you'll have some people nagging at you for doing this and doing that but nothing that really changes the outcome of things.
It does do a great job of immersing you though, Bioware really manages to create an illusion of things making a difference.
Hopefully, since ME3 will be the last in the series, Bioware can REALLY make things matter since they won't have to worry about how the next game will be affected.
ME2 is awesome, get it. Huge replay value, I've finished it like 4 times now

As far as I know the world started in 1991, I deny the existance of this "Wizardy"

Yeah, 28 years ago in fact. And this thing you might've heard of called Might and Magic beat it by 24. For shame, Adrius.

Yeah, 28 years ago and 24 years ago. And there was quite a few in between Might & Magic and Mass Effect as well. Take Fire Emblem 9-10(Path of Radiance to Radiant Dawn), the later which came out in 2007. Where Mass Effect1 came out in 2008. So there!
((Of course, not that loading up your file from Path of Radiance to Radiant Dawn affected the story, but it affected the character interaction and it was the first came that popped up in my mind which used this system which was released before Mass Effect))

Oh come on, it's weird isn't it?
Why should lesbian relationships be available but not gay ones? It's such obvious fanservice!
Not that I really mind, I don't even like romancing guys as a girl character, it feels weird somehow, but I still like having the choice.

Replaying the series (not touched it since the 3rd one came out like god knows when), and I realized something that I haven't before. I always thought the jarring feeling caused by the leap between the first and second games is just down to the overhaul the gameplay received. This is the first unique Shepard that I created, gave myself maxed paragon and renegade so I can pick and choose whatever I wanted (sometimes I'd go for neither blue or red as the standard grey better represented my Shep). Anyhow long-story-short, I'm a good 10 hours into the second one and that alien feeling still lingers and it's nothing to do with the game, it's Shephard, I don't recognize the protagonist, same voice different person. This feeling got me thinking, ME2 disconnects Shep so much from the first game, even the Reaper plotline is irrelevant as is Shepards unique knowledge regarding them beacons/cipher. ME2 could have had a fresh face, possibly DA:0 style with races. The more I thought about it the more it made sense.

The story felt rather disconnected but I don't remember Shepard feeling off.

Really?
I replayed ME2 last year, and I loved it.
How I remember the trilogy is that ME1 was a great game, but the gameplay was not that great. The story brough it home, but it always felt as it was just a tid bit of what to come.
ME2 ELEVATED it for me. But what I did not enjoy about ME2 was the reaper storyline because it never felt urgent.
ME3 was a great game with a horrible ending. I actually felt like it was the best gameplay but the ending was so mediocre.
I honestly dont understand what is off with ME2 except that the collectors does not feel like that big a threat as to the reapers.

It's not Shephard per-se, it's the transition from ME1 to ME2. Shephard is a soldier transitioned into a Council operative, loyal. ME2 feels almost alien, but you get adjusted, but what really irks me is then the transition into 3 pulls you back into essentially where the first left off, association with Cerberus fully cut and they're once again the boogymen that you hunt and kill without remorse almost totally throwing away all the development of the second game (that cerberus personnel and leaders have personalities and their own stories of how they ended up with a shady organisation, and reasonable goals/ambitions and some not so reasonable, but above all very human face that gets stripped entirely).
The second game could've been done by any high ranking Cerberus operative, possibly someone you'd have to fight or ally with in the third instalment (shep's team would've broken up after the Citadel anyhow, his ship returned to the Scout flotilla and the team reassigned and disbanded). I just don't feel like the ME1's Shep is all that necessary for the second game.
