Okay I just realized something. How come I can not use Armageddons blade edition in the "h3maped XXL.exe", map editor (the option is greyed out, but shadow edition works)??
That means some of my plans for my map just went down the drain...
Enlightening me to this issue could be good?
And if I get it to work will I then be able to edit my already made map into placing those objects armageddons blade implemented??
Fester must have screwed something up with his "EXE editor"

NEVER MIND, figured it out.
So for all that will need help with the same issue, needs to add the "h3blade.exe" (which is "armageddons editions exe") in the heroes 3 folder . I had that expansion "borrowed" so thats how I got to it

Do you have any progress with creating your XXL map? Remember, it will be the first XXL map, as far as I know So, it would be really appreciated if you tell us some details about your map/story background.

Well to be honest, its not really made like that. I guess I can add a great story background later on (though its not my area of expertise). But right now my focus is for a playable multiplayer map, that mostly is aimed at exploration and long lasting. Balancing needs to be taken care of as well.
It will be playable just singleplayer as well of course, but it wont be as fun without a friend or more to play with you (if playing singleplayer one probably needs to spice it up in speed, such as reaching eachother very quickly, and such).
Some things are going to be personal, such as what I believe a hero should have in skills. For example, a placed scholar might not have a random skill, but something I believe fits, for example Stronghold (such as offense). I find it weird if Haven found a cyclops club in their starting area, just because it was random (when there are no cyclops even present).
Such personal views, can easily be changed for anyone who wishes, or I might upload a version that has more random objects. (such as artifacts and skill objects). Be advised though that placing random artifacts leads to 100 duplicates in the end, and will lead to rather boring exploration in that case/area.
Well I will see how it will work out.
What will take time is the details in the maps.
The first layer is quick, its the second and third that takes time

EDIT: So my goal is to finish the map in details and objects, and to make it playable multiplayer and singleplplayer. Afterwards if needed, I can add a storyline for each faction (or some), so that events and such can happen when least expected. But it depends if I can figure out a good MAIN story at all. We will see about story and characters...

Ókay, I do have to admit, I am a bit rusty with these older map editors, and it takes a little time
Anyway heres the preview map (below), after this it will take a while before il post any more news I think. Whats been done is, Strongholds starting island is complete, and thats about it .
As you can see the creatures on the map are all random, BUT they have been given a custom fixed number by me, so that it will be extremely hard to advance fast if played on impossible (which it should be cause of its size).
Also the map will be a mix between islands (large and small) with water, and underground will mostly be just land. Any sort of feedback would be nice but I do not expect it so early.

http://rapidshare.com/files/415355036/The_Seven_Lands.h3m.html

PS: This was made from a human players perspective, so if the computer will get stuck that will have to be fixed.
(I am kinda certain that computer will get stucked if map is played on easier difficulty).
so I might change neutrals creature army size in final map.

I will BTW continue to work on the map after the weekend, and next week I got a lot of free time

I like your style of mapmaking. The barbarian area is perfect. If you'll encounter problems like restrictions on the amount of objects, let me know and I try to remove them.

And sorry for taking so long before answering, I personally hate when people are doing that against me in forums that are supposed to be somewhat fast/nice.
(I were away for the weekend).

Thanks I will be in touch if things dont work as intended with the map, such as restriction when placing objects And I am glad you liked it!

Oh yes, it may take time to complete 252x252 map! I would start with 180x180 at first.

Are you planning WoG map with all its nice features, or just plain SoD?

Actually we've already had two tiny maps (18*18) in Chinese... People quite like them though

Is it possible to play or create XXL maps with the Heroes Complete edition (without WoG)? I followed the steps provided on internet and I don't get a single error message while doing so, yet I can't create maps bigger than 144x144.

It doesnt want to be extraceted though

It says the file in unknown format or damaged and I have asked someone from this community to try the same for themselves and they say they have the same problem

So What to do now?

Btw I have heroes complete with WoG 3.58 I presume that will be ok as well?

I am afraid to some peoples dismay (not mine), that I will not use WoG features. My map will be created from vanilla version of the game (HoMM3 with its two expansions). Mostly because "Plain SoD" is what I find most to MY liking. Though if people would want to recreate my upcoming map to work with WoG they are free to do so. (Though I have no clue if that works or not).

Sidenote:
Its weird but it seems some items can not be found in the editor (some type of mountains for example), BUT they have been placed in original maps, so it is possible to copy them and paste them in a custom map. This has nothing to do with this mod, its just a weird thing in the game, which I think the developers might have accidently left out.

for SoD owners

1. Download this SoD 3.2 executable
2. Download XXL patch
3. Follow the orientation inside

for WoG owners

0. Backup h3wog.exe
1. Rename h3wog.exe into heroes3.exe
2. Download XXL patch
3. Follow the orientation inside

Note: if you plan to install HD patch later, don't copy any files to DATA folder

Hey people!
I need some advice, with border gates.
What type pf border gate should I use that are "guarding/blocking" the main island for a faction?
Should I use the typ of gate that can store units inside them OR the one that needs a keymasters tent to walk through.
Pictures below so you know what I mean...

Why should I use the one that requires the tent? Well by doing so I can restrict quick acess to eachother, and that will improve a long multiplayer game. For example, I can place one tent inside the starting island, so that that player can go out and explore other lands. And then I place one (same color) tent further away from the CLOSEST enemy-faction for that player, so that those two cant reach eachother for a long time (if I do the same for both).
Whats the downside with this? Well its quite simple, the fact that the computer will get dumbed down, and most likely wont be able to attack your main castles BEOFORE you attack his...

So question is... Garrison OR Border Gate?
Realize that if choosing Garrison, four factions (2 and 2) will reach eachother rather quickly. Left upper side VS right upper side, and then the other way around (below on map).

EDIT: And come one now. Its a simple question, so you can spare some time for it guys!

The answer is obvious: to pass garrisons you need power army, so you can control the time when the player pass it, to pass a border gate the player needs to visit the tent, no matter how strong he is. Both have different roles in a map progress...

For such a map I would choose garrison with legion of uber Dragons (or tier 8 creatures) and let players play in the middle indefinitely, however in SoD you are pretty limited with possible number of bonuses and passing it may take forever, so it's hard to balance.

Thanks for you answers, appreciated!
I am going to go for Garrison, since that will add more balance for computer player and more choices for a human player. Or so I believe.
I might try to split the map as well, and make sure ones has to reach each other through maybe, two specific islands (or something).
This requires thought, but at least I am certain now, that the starting islands will have Garrisons
