Worst creature designs

Which creatures have the worst design (graphics and animations)?

For me, it has to be the Militia. The way he walks is just completely retarded.

Other notables:

1. Leprechaun - such a useless unit but takes so long moving on the battlefield. His animation looks retarded, although I suppose it fits the character.
2. Satyr - same as above
3. Dragon Golem - doesn't look like a dragon at all, but more like a mechanical spider.
4. Sea monster - the way it struts around the ship is a bit iffy. I think the main problem is that it's too small in comparison to the surrounding. It's not much of a monster, but just a big fish.

And finally, good designs but with big flaws

1. Efreet - If you're fighting a lot of them, the fire breath gets really annoying
2. Gargantuan - Some of the animation frames when it's sitting still look very blurry, as if the animators just got too lazy to animate them fully.
3. Vampire - Looks cool, but attack looks a bit lame.
4. Sorceror hero - Overall, this hero looks very silly, especially in melee attacks when the halberd is equipped.

The worst one I think is the medusa, it's too ugly with two feet, in 3 the medusa is pretty nice, but in 4 I just don't understand why they gave an old women's face on it.
Also yes, the way of vampire attacks is really unbelievable, how can a vampire attack without a bite?
The last is the animation of the most creature's move, as my friend said, "They all walk with shaking, and when angels flying like it(he?) was a lame person."

Here's what Joe McGuffin, art director for H4, said about the vampire's attack in an old interview to Celestial Heavens:

CH: Portraying demonic creatures or undead in games has typically been a touchy issue. How did you guys handled that?

JM: This actually wasn’t too big an issue during development, but there were a few things that came up. I remember the mantra – “NO blood. Period.” I had to be very diligent in making sure no blood appeared anywhere in the game... the blood pool in front of the vampire generator almost slipped through the cracks! This is also why the vampire sucks the “life force” out of his victims instead of blood.

hmm, I think a bite would be worse. Imagine seeing a vampire lunging out and taking a bit out of a rock golem, devil or venom spawn.

If you're talking about the vampire, I think "the green liquid" is supposed to be some kind of energy or "life force". They wanted to keep the "E" rating, so they had to come up with something...

Hmm guess it would have been too difficult for them to make the vampire stack turn into a swarm of bats.  Would have been a better looking attack, and no blood needed.

VAMPIRES!!!

this kinda doesnt have much to do with this thread but i think the overal design of Vampires in heroes of might and magic is dumb! You know when vampires come back to life when they kill an enemy creature, thats stupid! Zombies should come back to life when they kill their enemies. Vampires should just recover their health. At least thats what i think.

uh...Actually I think they are both can fill up their dead when they kill a enemy, because I think the designer have considered the "embrace" of the vampire, but they ignore the "infect" of Zombie.
Or maybe we can think like that, the zombie in this world not like the zombie in Biohard, They are caused by the necromancer's magic, not virus, so they cann't be increased by infect?

Basically.  We are not talking the zombies from like Resident Evil or 28 days later..these are brought to life by magic not a virus.  Where as Vampires can make other vampires with a bite..although in lore it takes awhile..so..yeah not sure that would work either.  *shrugs*

What about wights and wraiths??? Shouldnt their number increase when they defeat their enemies? That would have been cool like in heroes 2 when ghosts numbers increase. But they were WAY too powerful!!!

I agree with Medusa being very badly designed. But if you ask me, nearly all the unit designs in H4 was way below what we have seen in the previous titles. The creatures that bugged me the most were the Orcs. I mean we all know orcs are stupid looking, but come on now, they could have come up with something more respectable even if in a disgusting way.

The ones I liked the most, on the other hands, were the bandits. I just love the dual-dagger combo and the ready-to-dodge posture.

But for good designs, I would just install Heroes 2 again, and look at the lovely Black Dragons and Paladins. 2D pixel-by-pixel designs were way more better than 3D prerendered (or not) graphics of today.

The H4 Orc is better than the H2 Orc. As for the H3 orc, the graphic is too low-res to make a good comparison. If you prefer more simple-abstract art, such as 2D, over more realistic art emphasizing movement, then you'd probably prefer H3's graphics. Personally, I don't think H4 designs are that bad. Of course it takes more skill to make art in H4 than in H3.

Comparing the Chaos units with H3 equivalents, I think some people are enamored by the "sexy" style of the H3 Medusa and the shiny armor of the H3 Orc and H3 Minotaur. Basically, H3 strives for fantasy IDEALISM, whereas H4 strives for fantasy REALISM. If you were to meet a real minotaur, he'd probably not be wearing armor. A real orc would probably look stupid and would probably be wearing hobo clothing with stone-age-looking axes rather than wielding shiny axes. Personally, I think the two styles are different and one is not superior to the other. People who prefer H3 are those who think that everything should look pretty. I don't think everything should look pretty.

If the criteria is comparing to other games of the respective time periods, then H3 is better. Even older games such as Age of Empires II had better pre-rendered 3D sprites than H4.

Some of the designs in H4 are pretty good, like the Champion and the Undead Champion.

Yeah, I agree. Actually, I think the design of minotaur and orc in H4 is fine. The minotaur without a amour are very near the set of the Greek Myth, as my sight, even they have amour, may the amour is very light just cover a little bit of the body, because they don't need, they are brave enough. As the orc, not bad, every time when I saw the orc in H4, it always make me remind Bebop(the pig head ) in the TMNT; and also I have seen the describe of the orc as a pig head in some fantasy novel.
But I have to say I really care the nice look of the female creature, I mean at least should be looked sexy , as male creature just some like vampire, devil etc I may care if they are awesome, but others I don't care too much.
BTW, the devil in H4 I think is awesome, too. With a sightly compare to the angels in appearance, they look like fallen angels, by the provocative animation, that's really cool. Actually, the design of the creatures in H4 were not so bad as someone normally thinking.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned the flaming chicken.

Unicorns and Nightmares looked fine but the way they moved was just really awkward. The Unicorn looked like it's going to tear itself apart when moving.

I think the biggest problem with creatures in Heroes 4 is that they looked like they're made of plastic.

I really agree with you, the animation of creature's moves were really awful, and also, the most of them looked like a plastic model.
And the flaming chicken, eh... compare with the other much worse creatures, it's not a big problem. Actually sometime it may made the players remind the chicken chips of KFC when somebody was hungry.

I never really stopped to think about that sort of thing. I'm still stuck on armies being the same size as smallish mountains.
