ICTC5: The Refuge

“My Duke!” the count says, bowing low to the Raven Warlord.  “I bring a present from the far East!”
“Do you bring me a Pao-Kai?” the duke asks.  He has for a while now dreamed of having an Orcish Pao-Kai in his army.
“No, my lord, even better!”  The Count says.  He claps his hands and two of his thugs emerge from the great stone doorway of the feast hall, each with a thick leather strip in hand, pulling with them a great, scaly creature.  It has two strong legs, each foot with a wicked claw on the inner toes, and its arms end in bulky paws with equally sharp talons.  The hands are bound, and the feet are chained, limiting the creature’s movement.  The head snaps around, writhing in silent, muzzled anger.  The tail beats against the doors that a steward shuts behind the thugs as they drag the beast into the center of the room.
“One of the Dark Elf’s riding beasts?”  The duke asks.  “What elves live east of us?”
“No my lord!  Not Elven!  And not a beast!  It speaks!”  With a flourish the count pulls the muzzle away, withdrawing his hand quickly as the creature’s mouth opens to try to bite at the count.  All eyes stare expectantly at the creature as it peers back at them, glaring.
“Well?”  Says the duke, growing impatient.  “Well, Beast?  Can you speak?”
The lizard stares at him, and then says, “You have one chance.  Release me and you will live to see the next sunrise.”
The Duke laughs uproariously, pounding the table and clapping in glee.  “It speaks!  What a clever trick!  How did you teach it to do that?”
“That’s the marvel!  We found it like this!  When we captured it ranted and raved at us until we managed to muzzle it!”
“Marvelous!”  The Duke raises his goblet to the Count. “Have your men tie him to those two columns there, he will serve as excellent entertainment for the night.”
“My lord,” the men say, dipping their heads and securing the poor creature in place.   The rest of the night and the midsummer feast followed with the idly rich of the court tormenting it, trying to elicit more speech from it.  For a while it was silently bitter, but it seemed to reach a point where it grew bored of sullen disdain, and began retorting to their jeers with scathing remarks.  It gesticulated emphatically with its claws, drawing all eyes, making sure no one noticed its left foot.  The talon on it was tapping a beat, tho one would only notice if one paid attention, which was amongst the rapidfire chatter.
Tap tap tap. Tap, tap tap tap.
And outside the great doors the guards pounded, trying desperately to warn the court, confounded as to why they would not answer.  One astute guard wondered if some strange witchcraft was at work.  No one in the feast hall heard his last scream before he fell to the floor, dead.
Within the feast hall the lizard finally stopped chattering, midsentence.  “Well gentlemen,” he said, something almost like a smile curving on to his snout.  “This court has amused me for a time, but now I think I’ll be going.”  In the silence after this declaration the tapping foot could still be heard.
Tap tap tap tap.  Tap tap.  Tap tap tap tap.
“Oh?  You’re tied up and in the middle of the most well guarded building in this great city.” The king leaned forward, smiling.  Tap tap tap.  Tap tap. “How do you plan on getting out?”
“By killing you and everyone in this castle, and then strutting back home.”
Tap tap tap tap, tap tap.
“Oh?  You and what army?”
Tap tap tap, tap.  Tap tap.
“This one.”
The tapping stopped.  The doors unlocked, and suddenly the hall was full of scales and talons and teeth and screaming.  The Raptor and his company emerged a while later, and meandered down the main street, baring their teeth at any civilians who happened to be in their way, laughing as they scampered back into their homes.  That was the end of the tyrannical rule of the Raven Duchy.
