I make maps..

I like readin map comments, mostly cause I do a lot of them...I find it funny I make 1 map, battle for honor, and maybe 10 others similar in style, but a little different, but the others never get played. even battle for honor 2, people say its better, but why no one play it? lol.

basically point is, people like playin same maps over and over and scared to try a new one. for what reasons? who knows, maybe losing points? I admit I play a lot of the same maps over and over, but most of time offer opponent choice in map to play, and unless its a real insane map or boring looking Ill prolly play it , hehe

as for mirroring maps..point brought up by Mocara I think. 3do didnt give enuff options to make mirroring less common. but I dont believe I mirror my maps exactly, altho some may be slightly..and for this reason get a lot of b*tching from people saying they are unfair, cause 1 color has naga bank above ground and other has it under.

and my final comment is...some people like some maps and others like other maps, so I just say, play what u like, and dont worry what other people play.

I agree with Mocara

For once in your many posts mocara you have started to make some sence

There is a reason that there is no attempt to make different styles of maps.  NOONE will try anything different.  Everyone wants maps that hand them everything, spoon feed them so to speak.  They all want enough resources and money on map to guarentee drags week 1  and for most towns castle also.  They all want either free relics OR relics that are so easy to get late week 2 or early week 3 that they might as well be free.  Then most want a closed map, BUT they all want to beable to have the garrison easy enough to accomplish a super fast break so as to offer a rush attempt.  Which IMO defys the point of a closed map.  ANyways, I dont think it is very realistic to play an entire map and not lose any of your important army.  Garrisons should be hard to break through.  IF the map is closed or the garrison is there to guard something of great importance than you should suffer some losses trying to obtain it. Trading 2 Archangels for Heavenly Helm, you must decide is it worth it.  Same goes for anyone who decides that they have NO other option but to rush you on a closed map.  Then if they think it nesesarry to break out early week 3 or late week 2 then the guards should be tuff enough to make them earn the the chance for the rush.  Having 10 behemoths guarding the closed maps is like putting 10 imps, really not much harder.  But over all you can see the most played maps are maps that offer the easy path.  I have long thought that it would be nice if there was a way to limit the amount that a map can be played, for example from month to month change the maps posted.  Like in april post 8 maps and only a map from those 8 are aloud to be played.  Then in May post 8 different maps.  There is no sence in having 134 maps in TOH maps list if only 6 maps are played all the time.  Make people actulally play with there true talent in knowing the game and not just cause they have the map memorized and know how many steps it takes to rush there opponent.

Which Mocara is one of the reason I never wanted to play Beltway or seven lakes, because people like Frank and Salamandre had the map completely maped out and knew quickest way to rush you or obtain a quick win.  I love the concept of playing Blind maps.  But as was said earlier there are always the people who will claim they dont know map and yet know it very well.

But the point I started out making is, that I agree with Mocara there is a need for different styles of maps and try to get away from mirrored maps that ALL have the same strategy and game plan just different shape.

BTW this is just an opinion on this subject so no need to start personally bashing me.   Try and stick to the subject of the thread.

hehehe well its still april so i am gonna pick on you

)) Well jinxer i agree with everything you say BUT!!! most maps start out as 1 month maps or even 2 month depending how its made. Now I remember a time when DW first came out it the game was over week cus both people still didn't have that "strategy".

With my map Deceptions i played till month 2 week 4 with grand elf i think cus neither of us had a really strong strategy... You gotta remember all maps get old and there are people out there to push a map to its limit. I thought week 3 was fastest for DOG but i was wrong. Titan pulled it to a 2 week map.

All maps start out slow cus nobody knows it but as it gets older the more ever awake heroes gamers will develope strats to make the map a race. Closed maps normally take the brunt of it cus most players wanna push there skills. With open maps its really dont have a time since if its medium u can push to ur opponent week 1 if its a large u can still do it week 1 with a little effort, if its an extra large prolly week 2.

Only way to stop this from happening is for 3D0 to add a "time barrier" to stop players from reaching each other for a set time.

Wow i made paragraphs spooky aint it?

I think is a nice idea to put some maps to be played from month to month, and only this few maps count for TOH points that month....perhaps two or three of our maps/month will be enough.
Itīs only a idea, and perhaps is not a good idea after all, but is a chance for all this forgotten maps we have in maps page......

to Jinxer

You never played beltway or seven lakes because you are too lazy Those maps can't be maped out, learned or anything else. There is full early interactivity between players, so the way to move will change at each game. I know seven lakes or beltway less than me vs you, bfh, desert war or hourglass, but I always prefer them;

The game is improvised when playing those maps, battles requiers much more skill, because they do not offer you a free early boost of your main.

I don't see why it is easier to rush in beltway or seven lakes than in Battle for Power or battle for honor.Try to play them once, Jinxer and then we can speak from same positions, now you just doing extrapolations, without having once a look at those maps.

Agree with Salamandre

Seven lakes is one of the best maps available IMO mainly because its much more interactive and with more options, meaning there is no specific strategy except what heroes is all about: expanding, flagging mines, collecting artifacts and resources, developing heroes, scout map, battles large and small etc.
Also its a hard map to rush, as you need a boat to reach opponents town. As long as your careful with leaving boats around you cant be rushed, and also its not a map that invites "rushing"
Could go on forever about this brilliant map, only want to say to you who havent played it TRY IT

Jinxer, I have played both Salamandre and Frank on this map as well as Antal etc and they dont know anyhting special winning strategy, except knowing the game

well I played these maps not long after I first joined TOH back in 1999, so I do not have exact memory of details but from my recollection I played Frank and someone else and Frank was at my town like week 2 day 1 or something like that. ANd based on that experience 2 years ago I vowed never to play that map since it was POSSIBLE for anyone experienced on that map to acheive victory so quickly.  Ofcourse I am better player now then I was when I first started so it might be worth giving another shot.  And I do like the concept of how elio explained, large small battles flagging mines being intereactive I am an open map fan, but there is a fine line between just happening to come accross your opponent and engaging them in battle and purposing starting the game on that map with intention of knowing you will be at there town on day 7 for the kill.

Sadly until last night I had only got to play Beltway once in heroes3.

Vs Frank and he wasted me pretty bad.

Got to play it again last night and at the end of the game Reanimator and I were pretty blown away at how great the game was.

Everything was contested from day2 on. It's a map for intense games for sure.

I'm going to agree with Jinxer as far as he says Frank can rush you on that map.

It's true. He has it mapped to the last detail but you know something? That really doesn't matter.

He would never do that to you now if he played you. He did that only then because he knew he could get away with it.

Frank mapped out a very harsh rush on that map in heroes2. Antal did as well. Lots did.

I used to like to take red and try different things to surprise russians who I knew would rush that map.

The thing about patterns on maps is if the map is open it can be disrupted. On closed maps they cannot.

I run the same pattern every time I play hourglass. It always reminds me of playing pacman. I'm not knocking it but closed maps are the easiest to pattern because noone interrupts you.

Someone can pattern Beltway or BFH only so far because the other player is unpredictable.

If anyone were to study Beltway or 7Lakes they would see they are impossible to pattern. I don't want to go into it here but there are a lot of reasons why.

Also Jinxer you mentioned Frank was at your door day8. Well I do not have to tell you that if you were to play him again and he were to try and do that that I am sure you would kill the head of his chain.

Using the first move advantage is not exclusive to beltway. It is a challenge to defend that on any map where you can chain from one town to another of course.

Don't let a bad taste turn you away from the best skill map around. Every single skill you can think of is used on that map and 7lakes also.

I think for a lot of people they think heroes2 and they reject but there were 600 heroes2 maps and only 5 got carried over.

The other 3 are Broken Alliance, Mineral Wars and Spellbound if you are wondering ( I always thought teleporters should have been carried over as well).

I wonder what maps will be carried over from heroes3 to heroes4?

-Mocara

P.S. Eliogabalus!! Let's play 7Lakes sometime!!

Sadly Beltway and seven lakes where forgotten allready in season 2 when I joined. So I have never had the chance to play em, but from the map ed they look really kewl. But besides from all u season 1 geezers Ive only seen one play Beltway, and that was Jareky, he held his shields for 20 games on that map. Pretty neat.

But sure im game for any of those 2 maps, and Elio u have allready promised me a game on seven lakes, dont u forget it

Souvenir

I remember that Seven Lakes with Eliogabalus as one of the most exciting game, which never a map as hourglass or desert war could give me the same. Look at this:

Eliogabalus receives Solmyr at start, and comes quickly in center to overplay me with him. I had Adelaide as main. Of course Solmyr massacred my main but, out of spellpoints and troops needs to rest in one of the numberous adiacent towns. I take this as an error, I attack him next turn and I kill Solmyr. Ok, so game will began again on second week, both we loosed our main.

But...Elio founds Adelaide in his tavern and laugh at me.=)During my turn I recrute some 10 scouts until I find Solmyr, LOL. So both we run around and around, trying to boost quickly new mains heros, and at this game he won: The 10 levels I gave to Solmyr gave him +10 knowdledge but never spellpower, damnt Wizards.By this time, more wisely, Elio goes for the relic behind Angels and takes over the mains war, boosting all stats once.

In Final combat Solmyr had most of good spells, but no spellpower. He casted ressurect 10 times but still Elio won the battle.

I dont know how many of us can remember such exciting situations on closed maps, loosing both mains, recruting  and changing them and really starting a new game on third week.

Besides this, when game was so intense, I can tell you that the 6 min limit we took at start seemed to me as 1 min, ouch.

Thank you Elio for playing me on this wonderfull map and thank you also for taking his defence here. Our game was great.

I can top that

Oh yeah well one time on battlemania I had like 50 dragons and stats of 45/42/38/55 and after 6 hours of us both building up we met in the middle and one of us had shackles and...

Or maybe that was hourglass 2...

Or was it desert war...

Or was it every closed map I ever played?

I cant remember. The point is that I want to play more games like the one you just described Sal.

It is nice to hear such great wars are still happening.

7 lakes has my vote for some of my best games also.

I remember a game with The Vulture and Frank on 7 lakes where me and vulture were chasing/running at/from each other and frank was on other side doing...whatever.

Anyways I was dungeon and we started on impossible so I couldn't build level 3 creature dwelling untill like week 2 or maybe even it was later i dunno.  Regardless I got killed by the computer late in week 3 and somehow this game is more memorable and fun for me than most of my victories against good players.

Another time I had a great hotseat game with my sister in which we switched main castles 3 or 4 times.  Thats because the computer or someone stronger forces you to migrate and so you have to abandon the town you just made into a fort
but its definitly a great map.
why don't I play it more?

In further tribute

Another thing I love about 7Lakes is the Orange necromancer.

Unless someone rushes him right out then he will be terrorizing the map with bone dragons and it is just like having a 3rd player in on the game.

Only one that moves very fast. =)

Once when Prometheus and I were playing beltway the computer built bone dragons wk1 and tried to take out Pro.

It was not only playing like a human. It was playing like Frank!!

I love it when the computer players are tweaked so well that they factor into the game.

Anyone can make a computer player too strong or too weak but to get it to be competitive is very tough.

WOW!!!

This sounds like my kind of game

I love games where you can do all kinds of crazy stuff and It ain't over till its over. I think rarely a game makes it into my top 10 list if it doesn't have at least 2 major battles between main heroes.

And how many TOH games have that? Sadly not very many

If there is anyone still out there who has never seen or played this map I would love to play it blind

If not i'll settle for 5 min in editor Defreni

Maxym,

I have really been wanting to play you as your comments seem very insightful and you seem so intelligent.

Maybe we could play 7 lakes sometime for no ToH points seems how I have seen it.

Or maybe play someone on it who hasn't then we can play on it.

You will find that seeing it once or 200 times offers no advantage.

There is no pattern to it and there are too many possible strategies to allow anyone to map out a surefire path.

Hope we can play soon, before you leave for your expedition.

Great Map....we need more like this

I'd like to get in on it too if it won't make it too long one turns.  Moc and dargon and I had a pretty fun time recently.  Prior to that I had only played this map about a year ago in a much more sucky style and have never had as many castle takeover in quite a while.  I don't know but I sure had a good time thanks Mocara and dargon.

Seven lakes

I played that map 1st time last night against 3lionshield, and I must say I was blown away.

I have never seen a map quite like this. I have had better games but not by much, and usually by a fortunete/unforunate set of circumstances. but this map has potential to produce games like that every time you play it

We played on 200% wich is probably the best way to play that map. It was a struggle against changing circumstances from the get go. I had to play on top of my game just to stay alive.

We never fought even once with 3lion, and it was still a great game. Isra with animate deat took him out as he was racing for the final battle.

I hope that it will become a popular map again, coz it has given me new desire to play in TOH. I have almost given up on it as you might have guessed from my comments about my disillosionment of TOH maps. This is a map i can see myself playing till H4 comes out.

So if you never played it, go and get it, but beware this map will test you in every possible way
