I have played Troelsen recently on BOB, and i quite like that map. It does suffer from the usual TOH map drawbacks like limited to no-interaction for long time, and a huge luck factor based on who wins the race to the middle. Not to mention that it is a schematic map.

But it is still quite fun to play and fairly intense not knowing what your opponent is doing and what he has only getting a glimpses of it through his stats increases in the tavern.

But i have played Frank on 7 lakes last night. And he has really shown me what this map can turn into. I think he has pulled every trick in the book, well maybe every trick in my book, i am sure he has few more left

I mean on what other map would you have a chance to make an Atlantic wall out of your troops to block an access to your town. He bought 6 new heroes in his town and blocked entire side of an island. Luckily there was still another side, although with only 2 spaces to spare.

Or the way he suckered me into giving him a free transport into his far away town. He killed al my scouts on his side but one. I though it was because he couldn't rech him in the swamp. Next turn he drew him out, luring him with his scout with 1 gremlin. I obliged by killing that scout and then he just made me feel really stupid transporting his hero (and just 2 red drqags for superior logistics) halfway accross the map to meet his army and take a relic.

And there were other instances like that. I mean how many times did anyone else have a chance to pull those kinds of tricks on any other map?

Seems no matter what the topic, that 'quote' of yours maxym always leaves me with the same bad feeling about whatever you said.

Maybe maps aren't the only reason you weren't playing much, maybe it was alienating a lot of great people with this attitude.

I for one have several friends in ToH that do not share all my views on the game , but would i give them up because they do something in a game i don't approve of? no chance...

You may see it as a general quote, and maybe a little bit of humour, but i see it as an insult to be called incompetant because i don't feel the same way you do.

Sorry Pan

I'll take it off if it offends you

you are right it was meant as a jest in H&R discussion, but it is everywhere now.  If you have been reading my posts then you will know i am not a rule hater. I played over 90% of my TOH games with no hit and run rule.

I like it as a rule but i am defending H&R as a tactic that should not be banned outright. As for other rules, if they seem necessary YES LETS HAVE THEM, by all means.

I play randoms and not only with KoR rules but a ton of other ones as well, randoms require them IMO to balance them out a bit. I can even see myself playing under no 4th or log rule on some maps, even though i have never done it yet. But i see its validity on some maps like BfH.

And I have never had hard time getting games. Usually the other way around. I was just burned out playing schematic maps thats all.

BTW do you like 7 lakes?

thank you for your post

i haven't really played 7 Lakes, my kids don't allow me to have any fun on open maps, but my husband, Yawacko was playing it the other day with a friend of ours, both were blind - and i don't think i've ever seen him having so much fun with the game

don't know how much of the fun was actually playing it, as it was laughing his head off at the way the computer player was attacking his opp every chance it got, lol

i like playing different maps blind with people, i find it fun, but having 2 little kids means that im way too distracted for open maps, im afk for half the action

thanks again for taking the time to reply, i appreciate that!

Beltway

Beltway is still my favorite map of all time. I think arguments can be made for all the colors, and it's an awesome map to play with really good players. I have lost my capitol city and still won on a few maps, but never as often as on Beltway. It proves very often how a smaller, but better led or equipped(as far as creatures-genies in h2)army can defeat much larger opponents. I also love it because it might be the one map I know where you can't load your whole army onto one hero and expect to win. There is usually a final battle, but it's either because someone got desperate as their towns were taken away one by one, or else someone got lucky with d-door and tried to spring an ambush. For H3 maps, there is a Beltway map made and I like it alot again! No genies this time, but still very balanced and fun to play. Perhaps if fire elemtals were more numerous and the portals better guarded it would be more like H2, other than that, only BfH compares for me.

Ichon I agree w/your comments on Beltway.

Let's play it sometime.

And Pan I think the world of you but Maxym I love your quote and Asimov is one of the great minds of the 20th century.

Pan you admit yourself that rules are not needed and so don't be offended by the quote.

Maxym is one of the rare players who will take anything that is handed to him and find a way to win with it and not looking for a rule to explain his loss.

Maxym don't back down and conform to the masses just to avoid ruffling some feathers. If we lose the last few pure players we have then the new crop of players will never know the lost art of pure play.

Pan you are one of the greatest people I have ever spoken to on the net so I am not attacking you.

I think Asimov has been taken a lil out of context here.

Obviously rules are what makes a game a game.

Without an offsides rule in hockey the games would be 25-20.

The rule is put in to make the games more defensive and Asimov understood this.

Isaac is referring to the incompetent who make rules to cover up for their lack of skill.

If someone wants to play no hit and run or no diplomacy, etc because it makes the game more fun then fine. After all it IS a game.

But if someone is saying "Let's make this rule because I don't know how to defend it." then they are masking incompetence.

You, Pan are not the target of Isaac's quote which has understandably been taken out of context.

Rules

I'll interject something here- as far as the common rules go, like no 4th level, or no diplo, and I'll also include no grail(for various reasons I think it's not necessarily unfair on larger maps), the only reason they are percieved as unfair is because only certain towns have access to them. I'd prefer to play a game between 2 strongholds or 2 fortress or mix & match anyday because it comes down to hero skills and exploration managment more than luck in spell guild. Although, all the best games I've ever had have been inferno vs inferno for some reason. I like playing with diplo and 4th's myself, but it does add an element of risk to a game. Especially since I'll usually be perverse and pick Fortress with beastmaster hero vs Solmyr just to see if I can win or not. Even without diplo there is a random part of the game, some games I have many like creature groups close to my castle, if I buy some evil eyes and then go challenge 2 groups of neutral evel eyes and they both join, well, I could have over 100 of them by week two and I have done this before. You don't need diplo to manipulate the game. It just makes it easier. Same with 4ths, I tend to think people are overly fearful of them. Of course in the right hands against an opponent who lacks good spells, they are dreadfully unfair. Yet, if you play right it would take extremely bad luck for you not to be able to construct your own spell caster hero. Bad luck happens sometimes though, as 2 of my 5 losses can attest. Spells like Frenzy and Water Walk were all I could get my hands on... vs someone with expert earth and tome of earth magic or something of that nature.

Of course if the game was made so that every town had 2 spell caster heroes with good damage spells available, people would still think hit&run unfair because what if one person manages to get 4 of them in his tavern in the first week? Same as gold and resource heroes right now. I have had so many games where I am playing a light oriented town adn get only necromancers in my tavern and my opponent gets 3 or more +350 gold heroes and a resource hero plus Alamar or something. Which reminds me of a loophole frequently engaged in- when 4th levels are banned, what about people who take a wizard with wisdom and scholar and level up them so they can take any heroes spells and give them to main? I've done this myself, a few times I've had four dif 4th level spells on a might hero with no business having that  much magic plus potent attack and defense stats. Or even worse, a 4th level game where one player gets 2 more 4th levels in their tavern plus their starting hero.

This game has all sorts of random elements you can't control like that. It's a calculated risk to play a game with no rules, but everything you do in the game is a calculated risk so why worry about it and try to make it fair? There will always be some unfairness in the game no matter how many rules you try and make.

well...

I didn't make my post to try to get Maxym to remove the quote, i was only stating how i felt about reading it - if i ever say/ do something that may be hurtful or offensive to someone i would hope they too would draw my attention to it.

When i said that Maxym alienated people, i didn't mean it as an attack on him, i meant it in that reading the incompetancy bit is very likely to make some people not wish to play with him.  Incompetant is not the nicest thing to be called

I'm saying nothing against Maxym or how he chooses to play, i think if he wasn't having fun with Heroes and now he is that's a great thing!  But that quote always put a little frown on my face, having read Maxym's reply the frown is gone, soooooo - mission accomplished

To Mocara, thank you once again for the kind words  I kinda expected to see something from you on this one, hehe
