Audio Commentary (With recording guide)

Didnt find any Heroes of Might and Magic III audio commentary on youtube. What a pity, isnt it? So lets make some. I think I will make some myself but Im not very good player so only newbies could learn from that. Maybe one of the better players here would bother to record a game and comment on it? Or just play? I could try to comment on it if youre not into commenting.

By the way, if you dont get what I am talking about, check out 2 audio commentaries of Warcraft III game, just to get a taste of what I mean by "audio commentary"

This one is reasonable and serious about strategy

This one has lots of trash talk in it but is quite entertaining if the trash doesnt bother you

This guide looks huge but actually you can learn the whole thing in 30 - 60 minutes and then you can do it forever Also check out samples at the end.

HOW TO MAKE A VIDEO OF YOUR MATCH

1. Get CamStudio
Its free (Apr. 2010) screenrecording program.
Officcial website
CamStudio Download

You also want CamStudio Lossless codec for your videos. Lossless codec download

Windows Vista/ Windows 7: Once you have installed CamStudio and Lossless codec, find your CamStudio shortcut you are going to use to start CamStudio. Rightclick it => Properties => Compatibility => Make a tick in "Compatiblity mode with Windows XP".

2. Choose good options
The initial video file might easily get as big as 4 GB, so you should try to make it smaller with options. The final version will likely be just around 60-70 MB per 10 minute, though.

Run the CamStudio, then choose:

Region > Fixed region > Make sure theres a tick in "Fixed Top-Left corner". Also make Left = 1, Top = 1, Width = 800, Height = 600. OK*

Options > Video Options > Set upper most meny to "CamStudio Lossless codec".
Here you can also mess around with the quality of the video. As you might consider having smaller file size for the video a good thing, reduce the frame rate to 20 frames per second (default 25):
Slide the slider below so that that you can see "Playback Rate 20 frames/second" in an upper box. Then remove the tick from "Auto Adjust". OK

Options > Tick "Do not record audio". This means, that there wont be any sound from the game. Thats good for much smaller file size + the sound is anyway horrible with 20 frames per second. If you are making video with higher framerate (from Video options) you can leave the sound in but then the file is also bigger. If you desperately want sound, tick the "record audio from speakers".

Options > Program options > Tick "Minimize program..."
Options > Program options > Play avi files > Tick "Do not play".
(Normally you dont want the video to start playing right away)

Make a "videos" folder on desktop or any place you like. Then go to
Options > Program options > Temporary direction... > Use user specifide directory > Find your "videos" folder on desktop, doubleclick it and OK.

Now make sure theres no more than ONE window of CamStudio, because you cant set hotkeys if theres more than 1 CamStudio instance running.
Go to > Options > Keyboard Shortcuts. Basicly just set the three leftmost shortcuts to what you like them to be, preferrably F1 - F8, since you want F10 and F11 for trading stuff between heros.
If you have no idea, just do so:
Top left > Make it F6
Middle left > Make it F8
Lower left > Make it F8 and add tick to lowest left "Ctrl".

Hotkeys to the right you dont have to use. Just set them to something you never press, like Home + Ctrl + Alt etc.

OK

Then your hotkeys are: F6 starts recording, F8 stops, Ctrl+F8 cancels.

3. Fun part I
Phew, if you made it so far you are doing good. Now you get to actually make a video! Make sure CamStudio is running. Press your "Start video hotkey F6" or the big red record button. You should now see green corners flashing, which means video is recording. Now press your "End recording hotkey F8". This pops up a place where you save the video to your "videos" folder. Give it a fancy name like "Test_1_2010AD". Congratulations! You just made a screen recording. Go check it out! (its in "videos" folder of course).

4. Fun part II
Now youre going to make an actual Heroes III video! Your "Start video hotkey F6" SHOULD work also when the game is in full screen, but sometimes it doesnt, thats why you start recording when game is minimized and  you can see green corners flashing. Do so:

. Start a heroes III singleplayer game to the point where you can choose towns etc. Make your choices.
. Now minimize the game by pressing either "Alt + Tab" or "Windows key" or (my favourite "Windows key + M".
. Make sure CamStudio is running. Press your "Start recording hotkey F6" or the big red record button in CamStudio. See green flashing corners.
. Play Heroes III for a like 1 minute (its a test still).
. Press your "End recording hotkey F8" and wait until you see the "Save as dialog". Save the video.
. Check it out! (It is where you saved it, propably in the "videos" folder you made before).

If you like what you see, go on and make a video of something more reasonable. If you want to record the entire game, make sure you keep in the part where we can see your settings.

SAVE THE VIDEO AFTER EVERY 10 OR LESS MINUTES (as a new file of course). If any of the video files gets too big, it just cant be viewed anymore. (Too big was for example 2 GB in Apr. 2010). If you record an entire game, save after every one or two days, this way the video pieces come small and logical. Always try to keep the video shorter than 10 minutes, because you cant put longer video than 10 minutes in youtube normally. (April 2010). If its longer than 10 minutes, you have to cut it into smaller pieces (explained later).

*If you have somehow made the Heroes III fullscreen resolution bigger than 800x600, the Left and Top are still 1 (one) but Width is the width of your new resolution (like 1024) and Height is height of your new resolution (like 768).

HOW TO MAKE THE FILES SMALLER

Now you have a bunch of videos that are hopefully shorter than 10 minutes but the files are still huge, like 600 MB-s for just 10 minutes. You should compress them. Heres how to do it with Windows Movie Maker, the program you should have if you have Windows XP or Vista or Windows 7. I have XP so the pics will be from windows XP movie maker default version.

1. Getting the video into Movie Maker

In windows go: Start > All programs > Windows movie maker

On top left you will see blue texts. Choose "import video".

Then just find your video file and press import. If its a big file, it might take a while to get it in.

Once its done, you should see quite a few clips appearing.

2. Removing unwanted stuff

Now select all clips (with Ctrl + A) and drag them to storyboard. Storyboard is the boxes you see in the bottom of the screen. If you dont see boxes, click on "Show timeline/storyboard" button, which switches between timeline and storyboard.

Switch to timeline with "Show timeline".

Now you can see the clips in timeline.

If you started recording with Heroes III minimized, you will now want to remove the part where you filmed desktop. To cut something out of a clip, select the clip in timeline, it should look like this, once its selected: (note the black arrows around one of the clips)

To remove a part from the BEGINNING of the clip, drag the LEFT edge of the clip a bit right. When dragging, you can see red arrows. The blue part will remain, the not-blue part will be removed. If you mess up, just use "undo" (Ctrl + Z or Edit meny) and try again.

While you drag, you will see in top right box at what point the dragging is. Use it to cut the video at best moment.

This way remove everything you dont want to be in the final video.

You can view the video in the top right player. It shows you the video with real bad quality but you can see what it will look like at the end. The quality is actually much better.

3. Saving and compressing

Once all trash is removed from the video, you can compress it and save it.
Go to the blue text in left "Finish Movie > save to my computer"
Give it a nice name like "Jebus week 1 day 1" or "Tourney II Batoonike vs Normann".
Specify the saving location from Browse, preferrably in the "videos" folder you made.
NEXT

Now you will choose the compression method.

Windows XP: take "show more choices", make a tick in "other settings" and choose "High quality video(large)".

Windows Vista (Win 7 ?) : Choose "other settings" and make it one of the UPPER "1 Mbps" compressions.

Press NEXT and voila, the video will be cooked for you! If its a big file, it might take quite a long time.

Once its done, check it out!

HOW TO UPLOAD IT TO YOUTUBE

This is the easiest part. I think the quality settings specified above are the best for a youtube video. Feel free to experiment with different CamStudio quality settings and Movie Maker compression settings.

Go to youtube.com, top right you can see "create account". Make an account (if you dont have one). Log in.

In upper middle you can see "upload", where you can upload your video. The uploading might take quite a while.

Make sure to give us a link

SAMPLE 1: This is day1 on Jebus Cross with Maretti. The quality is actually much worse than the one you will get following the guide above, because it is compressed several times.
VIDEO SAMPLE 1

SAMPLE 2: This is the LOWEST quality I would consider. CamStudio settings: fps 20, quality 1, no sound. Compressed with Windows Movie Maker compression "High, large". 2 hours = ~ 360 MB + sound.
VIDEO SAMPLE 2

SAMPLE 3: This is a bit higher quality, Id expect numbers and text to be more readable. CamStudio settings: fps 20, quality 50, no sound. Compressed with Windows Movie Maker compression "High, large". 2 hours = ~ 360 MB + sound.
VIDEO SAMPLE 3

NOTE: 24. januari 2011. The maximum youtube video length is now 15 minutes, not 10 as before

Updated the "guide" in first post.

Actually what you could do is make some educational videos of not the whole game but "standard battles" like crypts, treausuries, banks, stockpiles, utopias. Theres a good description of some of these in other threads but it would still be nice to actually see it.

I think it would also be extremely entertaining to see a Tourney II battle between some of the best players! Maretti now has "basic recording" so some of you guys should challenge him

Hi, I have a problem... I just downloaded CamStudio and now I am trying to make videos

After I press F6, CamStudio's window disappeared.. Is this normal? Ok and after F6, I get flashing green corners..
But now the problem: After F8, these green corners do not flash anymore (I hope this is normal ) but I do not get any 'pop-ups' so I am not able to save the video... What should I do I hope someone will help as soon as possible because I fear the worst

BTW there is 'Flashing'-window which I can't see and so I can't close it ?

If you end recording, there should be a "save as" dialog. If it doesn't appear then try Alt + Tab out of the game and see if you can find it. If it doesn't appear you should contact Camstudio support or something. The "Save as" dialog has to appear.

You might also get strange problems if the video file size gets very large. Did you try it with just a few seconds of recording?

Hi, now I remember what actually happened.

I tried today test again but then I saw that my hotkeys do not work they had been modified back to default. I don't know why.
But when I changed hotkeys again and start to record video, I got an error messages like them:

"Unable to set shortcuts for Record / Pause Key"
"Unable to set shortcuts for Stop Key"
"Unable to set shortcuts for Cancel Recording Key"
"Unable to set shortcuts for Next Layot key"
"Unable to set shortcuts for Previous Layot Key"
"Unable to set shortcuts for Show / Hide Layot key"

Why this happened ? Now all shortcuts are on 'NONE'...

If you are unabled to set hotkeys most likely you have 2 or more instances of Cam Studio running. Make sure you have only one.

Okay now I changed them back.

But when I start recording (F6 or clicking red ball), CamStudio's window disappears. And there are not green flashing corners..
(This is strange Because when I recorded first time, there were flashing corners but now there are not anything corners... )
Then I used F8 and CamStudio's window appeared without savig thing..

Talk to cam studio support, if there is one. These are all really strange problems.

EDIT: If someone happened to download Cam Studio lately from the official website then there might be a problem. The website was hacked and for a short period the official version actually contained malware. Everything is safe and ok since July 26. If you think you might have got the hacked version, here's the official instructions how to remove it http://camstudio.org/blog/removing-malware-camstudio

The hacked version was saved as "Camstudios", with "s" in the end. Instead of normal "Camstudio". If this is the installer you have, defenitely check out the above link.

Heroes player, this might be the reason why it didn't work for you.
