Noob needs some help to join the community

Hey guys

So as the thread says I'm new, I've been playing Heroes on and off for 10 years now. Needless to say 3 is my fav followed by 2. 5 wasn't so great for me... Anywho I lost my H3 CD so I bought and downloaded H3 complete from Good Old Games (gog.com) they seem legit so I'm hoping everything is in order for me...

Basicly I just need some help to get started if someone would be kind enough, I'm not new to internet gaming or competition gaming but I havn't got much of a clue on H3 other than what I've been reading here over the past couple of weeks...

So, what version do I need? How do I go about connecting and getting some games down against novice - mediocre players? Is there a chat room where we organise games etc? I don't want to get completely raped just yet .

Anyways to give you an example of how bad I must be, I've pretty much only played part of the campaigns, quite a few custom games and it revolves around me gathering up every last creature up to my 7th level before I attack someone so any tips etc would be great on how to improve. I did read some noob posts a couple of weeks ago with 382490328409832409820948324928409328093842 tips and hints but more are always welcome... Oh and I do lots of theorycrafting etc when I play games, so generally I don't think I'm too bad in combat but I'm sure it could use some tweaking.

BTW my races of choice are Stronghold and Fortress. I like the underdogs and cheaper units ftw. Tower takes too long for me to build up, as does Castle and Dungeon. I'm not too interrested in Conflux since they seem to be regarded as the top race (or one of them)... The others are middle ground for me but this might all change when I get a clue.

Anyways sorry for the wall of text, I hope I didn't go too far into detail or ask too many stupid questions... Thanks in advance for any help =)

Hi and welcome.

You may want to use hamachi and/or gameranger also. There are a number of active leagues also, basicly you register at a site, send a personal msg, receive skype/icq and talk about rules and templates/fixed map. Than make a network using real ip/gamespy/gameranger/hamachi, host or join a game aaaand play you may want to use "cranim" or auto-saver - the first removes the in-battle animation and sort-a teleports the unit to save time, the latter just renames and save each turn in a folder to review later

good luck and have fun

You may wanna use the exchange all army/arts button too. You find it here http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=32547

Gameranger is the best place to find games these days. Make sure to agree on rules and setup before you start.

Guys, dont give too much advices to new players, they will get confused with all those things.

In order to start playing online, you just need one thing. A place. Gameranger is currently the best one available. Join there, create room and start playing.

I will just tell you about two type of players u can find there:

1. novice players and those who play for pure fun with no competition in mind

They play fast turns (1-2 min), with no rules, on mostly standard 3DO templates or some fixed maps. Their level of game is low compared to the 2nd group of players and often they quit game before end and you will not see them again.

2. advanced and expert players

They play competitive games for online tournaments mostly, but they can play for fun too. In any case, they play slow turns (6-8 minutes or unlimited), not because they are old, but because they use all 8 heroes you can hire. They play mostly non-3DO templates made by other players and sometimes fixed maps or 3DO templates. They dont quit games and will appear online constantly, so you can almost always count that possible save will be finished.

Now, it is your choice which group you will fit. In case u want to chose 2nd, i suggest you to read maretti's and xlnt's posts one more time.

Thanks Xlnt

And thx Protos but it's ok I'm not confused yet. Half of my OP was to introduce myself to the community =). I just have a bad habbit of over explaining myself and asking stupid questions because I'm kind of a perfectionist when it comes to grasping the bigger picture...

Well the main factor for me will be how long games last. My fiance will cut my nuts off if I spend hours on a single game. I used to play Starcraft in PGT and Counterstrike in WCG / ESWC / Rage comps aswell as WoW in the top raiding guild / decent arena teams on my serv etc so I'd probably be a more serious player if I got into it. It's hard to just roam around like a random gorilla when you have played at least one game seriously . (not trying to wet my own biscuit either :s)

I'd have to practice a bit with nubs before I stand a chance against any of you though

But thanks I'll sign up with gameranger. Still need those ppl to come fix my lines at home...

it will take 2-4 hours to play 1vs1 game with group 1 players
it will take 4-6 hours to play 1vs1 game with group 2 players if you don't have good knowledge of template
it will take 5-9 hours to play 1vs1 game with group 2 players if you are expert player and have great knowledge of template
game time depends on map size/template; most oftem L and XL are played online at 130/160% difficulty;
you can check average game times for particular templates and maps at www.heroes-iii.com at STATISTICS page.

Damn! I was under the impression that expert games would involve alot of rush tactics and fast games like Starcraft.

Your brains must be fried after an intense session

Hmm. Well I suppose that's doable at a game per day, or every second day... My woman isn't going to be pleased when I tell her I'm gonna be a zombie for 4-6 hours a day though :s

Not the most intense times but sitting and not paying her any attention for a few hours is gonna make her mad as a snake. Good thing I just got her hooked on Dungeon Keeper

Thx again for the info, just checked the statistics page of what you linked. I see Necro isn't very popular, maybe I should consider giving them a go. I know there are all sorts of Tourny rules you guys play by though, don't people abuse Necromancy for an edge? Or is there conditions to playing it or something? Just always figured they would be a good competition race is all...

Necro is often banned or nerfed by rules for being too good.

Experts rush in Homm too, thats why the game lasts so long. Its a turn based game paradox. In-game, the game is very short, but in real time its longer if you wanna play faster in-game.

Ahh ok, too bad about Necro. Too bad it's an older game otherwise they might have had design teams working on balance issues in that particular case.

Aha I'm trying to! That was my answer to WoW and it worked out pretty nicely. She's a bit impatient with heroes though. "read the tooltips" is my general response... Maybe Dungeon Keeper will keep her busy for a while
