Are you sure you have played this game more than ONE time as of yet? 1000 (!!) Skeleton Warriors (in 1 stack) will lose vs ONE Sprite every time!
Normal,I tested it and I killed the sprite with skeleton warrior

Halebardier - Tough and will be a defender 'cos of bad speed. Preferrable for archer defence.
Centaur Captain - Awesome unit for lvl1, probably my favorite. A bit low on defence.
Skeleton Warrior - Great numbers, simply.
Gnoll Maruder - Good stats but don't upgrade if you don't have lots of wood.
Master Gremlin - Good thing they're ranged otherwise they'd rival familiars on the last spot
Infernal Troglodyte - A bit whimpy for my taste.
Hobgoblin - Same as Troglodytes but worse.
Halfling - Neutral creature  , quite good though can't take a beating.
Familiar - Only acceptable due to mana absorb, which isn't that good anyway.
Pixie - Has its uses as Sprites (due to no retaliation and you get many. Still they die like flies
So for me personally:
1. Centaur Captain
2. Halberdier
3. Skeleton (counting out numbers I'd probably put Gnoll Marauder or Sprite here).

Sure, against the AI it is much easier, but I bet you couldn't do it against other human being.

Familiar: is a good creature to attack but what I like about it is that has the ability to fly (When have experience)
