Need help - map editor

I'm creating a new map, and I want to make a new hero portrait, not those portraits which exist in Heroes. What must I do?
Sorry, I'm a noob in Heroes...and IT.

First, do you have Adobe Photoshop or a reasonable type of picture editor? You just can't put up a file in jpeg or any other type of pic. They have to be in PCX. You'll have to make a large and a small pic to replace the ones you want to replace. The size, however escapes me at the moment, but someone here probably has that information at hand. the pics will have to be named individually. For example, hps.001kn and hpl001.kn  Now, hps will be your smaller pic, hpl is the larger one, 001 replaces the original Hero portrait in the game. kn denotes "Knight." And all pics can be placed directly into the data folder, and they will replace the originals if all is done right.They'll look like this: HPS001kn.pcx and HPL001kn.pcx once the correct size has been made. It's been so long for me. I believe they are case sensitive in the lower end.

ByteBandit beat me to it, but here's some additional info. Like he said, portraits consist of two differently-sized graphics files in PCX format (256 colours only): the large file must be 58x64 pixels, the small file must be 48x32. If you don't have an image editor such as Photoshop in order to customize your pic, you can choose one of the existing portraits (see here). For example, here's what a new portrait should look like:

Copy both files to your Heroes/Data folder. You can simply delete them when you don't want them anymore. If you plan to share or publish your scenario, you'll have to zip the pics with the map.

Finally, rename the pics: The name for the large portrait should be Hpl###xx.pcx where ### is a 3-digit code for the specific hero and xx is a two-digit code for the hero type. The name for the small portrait will be Hps###xx.pcx. The hero code and number range should be:

sh = special heroes (000-008)
el = elementalist (000-007)
pl = planwalker (000-007)
kn = knight (000-007)
cl = cleric (008-015)
rn = ranger (016-023)
dr = druid (024-031)
al = alchemist (032-039)
dm = heretic(048-055)
hr = demoniac (056-063)
nc = necromancer (072-079)
ov = overlord (080-087)
wl = warlock (088-095)
br = barbarian (096-103)
bm = battlemage (104-111)
bs = beastmaster (112-119)
wh = witch (120-127)
?? = more special heroes (128-132)

So if I wanted to replace Mirlanda the Witch, I'd rename those two pics above to Hpl120wh.pcx and Hs120wh.pcx and copied both files to my Data folder.

Thanks Vlaad for filling in the blanks. However, uh-hem, I believe the correct file tag for the smaller Miranda is: Hps120wh.pcx, not Hsl120wh.pcx  At least on my system it has to be like that.
But like I stated eariler, it's been a while since I mass produced Portraits. These days, translating maps to English consumes most of my free HoMM time.
