Centaur Captains (without contest the best level 1)
Marksmen (most level 2's aren't worth while)
Grand Elves (no level 3 comes close, maybe griffins)
Vampire Lords (drain life is unstoppable)
Mighty Gorgons (death stare can really hurt level 7's)
Efreet Sultans (nothing can beat that fire shield)
Titans (best shooters in the game)

My picks
If taken growth rate into account:-
Lv1: Sprite (fastest lv1, no retar. well,
if growth rate not taken into account,
I'll go for centaur captain)
Lv2: hags (nasty) or raider (great attack)
Lv3: griffon (most versatile lv3)
Lv4: vampire lord (no need to explain  )
or maybe crusader for expected short and keen
battle e.g. vs other "ideal armies" 
Lv5: mighty gorgon
Lv6: efreet sultan (if pick blackie/phoneix for lv7)
or dread knight (if pick AA for lv7)
Lv7: AA under normal case. But I may prefer phoneix (4
phoneix can beat 2 AA usually) for initiative.
Then a simple mass haste is enough. All your shooters will
be useless............maybe titans will be only shooter
left after round 1.

Who in their right mind would pick a hyrda as their 7th level...I mean c'mon they just suck for all purposes. If I want to attack all creatures around me I will use a magic elemental since their damage/defense ratio are just slightly less than the hyrdas. Not to mention hyrdas can only attack things in front of them and magic elementals can attack from ALL directions.
Lineup:
Cenetaur captains (fast and the best level 1)
Harpy Hags (good speed and ability rocks)
Dragon flies (faster than most level 5 and even 6's)
Vampire Lord (fast and hard to kill)
Mighty Gorgons (cant beat the special ability)
Magic Elemental (desent speed for a level 6 and attacks ALL units around it)
Phoenix (by default will go first with its 21 speed, and gets to attack two enemys by attacking the creatures in the 3-4 or 4-5 lineup if the opponent dont have tactics)
Speed and raw natual abilities would make this killer,if possible if you can slow their fastest unit, or even blind it (expert in both prefered) you could do a LOT of damage very fast.

As for your own army Dear_M.. u better read the lady's question again ... she said no morale penalties ... and I'm pretty sure vamp lords don't do wonders for morale issues!@
PS: isn't it so that mixed up army of three sorts will always result in lower morale (with no skills/arties ofcourse)?

Well the point being is they are too slow and too weak to ever get a chance to attack anything should it get behind it while its attacking a creature in front of it
