You are the DJ - a playlist contest

Quite an easy thing: each round, you get a genre or general theme (f.e. film music, or "epic" or "fantasy" or "violence", etc.) and you create a playlist of 10 songs of this genre/theme (linked on youube or such, so I can hear them). I judge by quality (of the song, not of the record), fitting into the theme, and diversity of the playlist.

Anyone interested?

@warmonger: finding fitting songs is part of the competition
Can I count you in?

@friendofgunnar: That's perfect, as long as I can listen to them^^

comment: I'll try to be as objective as I can, but maybe another judge, hopefully with a completely different taste of music, could be helpful.

If there's only 3 participants maybe you could create playlists too and then we could grade each other.

My entire last.fm profile is my playlist.

That's over 1500 artists and still going up with each new artist I discover. There's a lot for you.

ok. I think I'll just begin, anyone who wants to jump in, can do so. The first task is:

The songs you choose have to be from the 60s. Otherwise, no restrictions

"The 60s" is pretty general and can mean just about anything.

But maybe I'll try though. Not sure if I want to give a sampling of different genres from the 60s or narrow it to something like Motown, protest songs, folk, psychedelic, or whatever. (I was listening to a bunch of early-mid 60s folk music tonight)

Too late to do it tonight though, and I might forget by tomorrow.

@binabik: the theme is given You can do whatever you want, as long as it's 60s ... yet mind I judge how good the songs fit together as well as diversity. Don't make it too the same (so it could get boring), but a thread could be helpful. It depends

@mytical: Give 'em to me and I'll try to find them. Can't promise I'll be able to judge them(cause I need to hear them for it), but I'll do my best.

@mytical, one option besides finding the song on youtube is to go to the mp3 section at amazon.com.  You can usually hear a big enough chunk of the song to get an idea of what it's about.

Also, if you have a gmail account you can set up a website and post excerpts if the song is already on your hard drive.

Hope this works Mind you I can't hear the music so I am hoping it is the version I am looking for.  I'll put a little of the lyrics after the links .. just in case.

Respect Aretha Franklin.  R E S P E C T, find out what it means to me.

Cant get no Satisfaction
Rolling Stones.  "I can't get no... satisfaction."

Proud Mary CCR.  "Proud Mary keep on burning, big wheel keep on turning.  Rollin, rollin, rolling down the river."

Baby LoveSupremes Ooh baby love, my baby love I need you, oh how I need you But all you do is treat me bad Break my heart and leave me sad Tell me, what did I do wrong To make you stay away so long

Hit the road jack Ray Charles.  "Hit the road Jack, and don't you come back no more no more."

Bad Moon Rising CCR (if you want some GOOD music from that era..listen to some Creedence Clearwater Revival). I see the bad moon arisin', I see trouble on the way, I see earthquakes and lightnin, I see bad times today

Louie Louie Kingsmen "Louie Louie, oh Louie, singing we gotta go now."

Heard it through the grapevine Marvin Gaye "Oh I heard it through the grapevine, and I am about to lose my mind..hunny hunny yeah"

Good VibrationsBeach Boys "I'm picking up good vibrations, she's giving me excitations"

Youve lost that loving feelingRighteous Brothers "You've lost that lovin feeling, oooh ooh that lovin feeling, now it's gone gone gone."

Just to name a few.

This is somewhat of a chronology of the 60s about both the music and the changes that took place in the 60s. Starting with an innocent song about the loss of innocence, and later a transition involving a combination of civil unrest, technology and experimentation with the music and electronics, but also the overlapping of the radical with the more traditional, the mellow with the hard.

A song about the loss of innocence, a whole generation grew up with this fairy tale song but didn't understand it at the time
Puff The Magic Dragon by Peter Paul and Mary 1963

Some Motown
I Cant Help Myself by The Four Tops 1965

A classic Beatles song
Help by The Beatles 1965

A big jump to psychedelic. See what happens to music when you mix acid and electronic gadgets
I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night by The Electric Prunes 1966

This is more pop psychedelic if there is such a thing (along with that horrible lip syncing from the 60s )
Pictures of Matchstick Men by Status Quo 1968

Dig the go go dancers
Journey to the Center of the Mind by the Amboy Dukes 1968

Back to mellow. Oh, the youthful idealism from the 60s, everything will be good if you just wish it so
Alantis by Donovan 1968

Light one up and sing along
Dont Bogart Me by Fraternity of Man 1969 (the credits in the video are wrong about this being by Country Joe and the Fish)

Pseudo-pop didn't go away (hey look, it's even in color!!)
Baby Its You by Smith 1969

And last but not least, some Joplin blues
Kozmic Blues by Janis Joplin 1969
