So for this round I'd have to pick Demonge's narrowly over Jiriki's, with Markkur's in third place.

I agree with both the ranking and the "heavy on the rock" comment. It's in my bones "Mixing" requires some skill on my part and I may not have it. I was thinking about joining again but the next theme is too hard for me so I'll just wait till another round.

Looks like I picked a bad one to try and join in on.

Rammstein's the only thing coming to mind at the moment, really; I know plenty of foreign songs, but two languages is tough!

Well well, I did not want such a result ^^"

I agree the theme sounds hard, but I have tried myself before writing it, and I can say that once you have found some, you can think of many.

But never mind, what I can propose is to postpone that theme and make a new round with something else, so that Markkur and SwampLord can join easilier.

If this is ok with you, the new theme is: Covers.
No original song alllowed!

That should be an easy one

Hahaha, I have some good ones for this.

Is a remix of a song considered applicable for this, or does it need to be very similar to the original lyrics?

EDIT: Never mind, found enough good ones without even needing to consider remixes!

? Why? O.o

Anyway, for this, I have quite some in mind!!!

Marilyn Manson ~ Sweet Dreams
Original by: Eurythmics (I think)
I like the manson version MUCH better. It may be because I am more the rock type but I also find the whole drive of the song better in the manson version...not that I didn't like the eurythmics' one!

Van Canto ~ Battery
Original by: Metallica
A-Capella-metal is an awesome idea, I think

JBO - Kuschelmetal (Titel translation means "cuddlemetal" (wordly) but is an allusion to "Kuschelrock" which is a german term for very soft rock, mostly with love texts^^)
Original by: Various (I won't link all of that here^^)

The Bates ~ Glass of Champagne
Original by: Sailor

Just remembered I may not miss soem of these guys:
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes ~ I believe I can fly
original by: R Kelly
...I just love songs being turned to rock

Joe Cocker ~ With a little help from my friends (live at woodstock)
Orginal by: Beatles
This cover is a real amazing song, leagues higher than the original!!!

Bono ~ I am the Walrus  (from the movie Across the Universe)
Original by: Beatles
Love this crazy version of the song, somehow...druggy^^ especially when also watching the video

Richard Cheese ~ Last resort
Original by: Papa Roach
The idea alone is amazing allready (a smentioned by SwampLord): Turning a rather hard metal (or something like that) song into this...lounge music And done in a way that works, which I find most amazing!!!

almost forgot one of the best:
Johnny Cash ~ Hurt
Original by: Nine Inch Nails
I just love the version by cash so much it flows through me and...just WOW for me!!!!

Die Toten Hosen ~ Auld Lang Syne
Original by: Traditional, I think...
You will knwo the song, I suppose. I like the version very much!

Haha omg I completely forgot about that song In The Hall of the Mountain King, played it way back when in orchestra and it was awesome.

Here's my list; I tried to keep a theme of "genre bending", most of these are radically different from their original styles. Also just talked about why I picked them a little. There's a lot of rock/metal, but I tried to balance it out with an equal amount of stuff at the opposite end of the spectrum.

1)Children Of Bodom-Somebody Put Something In My Drink
-Blows the original out of the water; singing is better, guitars are better, energy is way better.

2) Alien Ant Farm-Smooth Criminal
-Good rock cover of some Michael Jackson, I liked how they preserved the energy in the original song.

3)Glee-Sweet Caroline
-Regardless of how any of us feel about Glee, this is a genuinely great cover of a classic. Really well done, imo.

4)H.I.M.-Dont Fear The Reaper
-I love H.I.M. and I love BOC, so this was a natural pick for me. I really like how they completely changed how the song feels with the slower pace and the female singer; really beautiful, IMO.

5) Frank Sinatra-Someone To Watch Over Me
-This is in a fairly similar style to the original, but it's a phenomenal Sinatra song; I love it.

6) Frankie Goes To Hollywood-Born To Run
-Great cover of a Bruce Springsteen classic.

7)UC Mens Octet-Final Countdown A Cappella
-Great a cappella cover of an awesome 80s pumpup song, what's not to love?

8) The Ooks Of Hazzard (Ukelele band)-Kids
-Loved this the moment I saw it, they do amazing things with ukeleles.

9)Sonata Arctica-World In My Eyes
-One of my favorite SA songs, period; I think they captured the beat and heart of the Depeche Mode song perfectly and infused it with an incredible amount of the energy that's so characteristic of their earlier albums.

10)Richard Cheese-Down With The Sickness
-I could do a whole thing about Richard Cheese, but this is far and away his best one. There's just something awesome about taking an absurdly dark metal-y song and making it 40s lounge style with piano and happy singing. I had this idea as soon as he announced the topic, too, so I didn't steal it from you, Jiriki!

Hope you like them! Let me know if you need links to any of the original songs because you haven't heard them, and I'll grab them for you.

Well I may not have well understand what you think guys, but for me remixes and covers are different things.
Yet a good remix is nice to hear too! It is just another story for me.

For Pachelbel, I did not think about such possibilty, but why not?

I have sent messages to binabik and mythical, we'll wait a few days just to see if they come back, then we'll go on, and try not having months-lasting rounds.

To SwampLord: I do not know all genuine songs, but I assume none of you cheated and chose real covers. It's a game after all!

@demonge: By the way, is it okay, if the lyrics are changed or not, now? And hpow mcuh change would be okay. Since the mentioned band J.B.O. makes satirical texts over the songs they cover, usually (for example "Gimme Dope Joanna" out of "Gimme Hope Joanna" Or "ein Fest" (german for "a party") out of "Go west", or similar parodies.
And: Would a medley of quite some covered songs be okay, too?

Oh, I just thought you might want the original songs so you can get a sense of context for how the cover changes it/stays faithful to it. Nothing to hide here!

Hmm the ONLY cover song I know is Eminem - Toy Soldiers.  Have no clue what other songs I listen to might be covers..cause I don't care if they are or not.

Edit : Currently listening to songs listed as 'covers' that I like...so working on a top 10..may need a bit of time to work through them. Now as for the 'originally by' part .. this is just the information I have..if it is wrong..please let me know via HCM.

Once bitten twice shy - White Snake - . (Originally by Ian Hunter)
Cum on feel the noise - Quiet Riot (Originally by Slade)
It's my life - No Doubt (Originally by Talk Talk)
Mony Mony - Billy Idol (Originally by Tommy James)
Respect - Artha Franklin (Originally by Otis Redding)
WAR - Bruce Springsteen (Temptations originally??)
First Cut is the Deepest - Sheryl Crow (Original Cat Stevens?)
I put a spell on you - Bette Miller (Original Screamin' Jay Hawkins?)

Sure it is.

Jiriki: medleys are ok to me. Be careful of satirical songs yet. Some (a few) words changed is ok, but a whole satirical song is no more a 'real' cover I think.

As said by Mytical (glad you changed your mind), goal of this round is to find covers better than original, that would have given a new youth to the song.

Thoguht that^^ Probably a different understanding. For me, it IS a type of cover. I don't like covers being TO close to the original anyway...though some good are there, too. I mean, anyone can just REPLAY a song^^ But doing that the original is mostly better, I think

Maybe I loose through that, but I think most of my covers may be a major change to the original - not textwise now, since you mentioned that as a no-go, but the music. So my focus is more on making something new and different out of the song - in a great way, of course!!!

I tried to find Hoffmans version but didn't. Seems like I heard it at his site? years ago. I think it is very good, but then it's hard. There are a lot of covers of this song that I didn't know, till doing this.

@All, I can't say I like the versions I've chosen better than the originals...the writing of the song figures in too much with me.
Most of the time, I don't. Far Corporation, on my list, gave it a go though.

@All
With Christmas on the way here's something "a little different" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhlm232KRlQ

Ok Jiriki, I think an example is worth a long post.

Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSvIbRgf6lc
... is what I think is an awesome cover of the Police standard Roxane.

They have added lyrics, they have changed the music, but the basic lyrics are still there, the mood is the same, and it ends up in a whole new song that is as great or even greater than the original, the changing of music made it amazing.
Yet it is neither a satirical song, nor a remix.
You see what I mean?
