Nature's luck is absolutely horrible. Any might faction will kick their ass due to no might skills. It doesn't matter even if they pull off the first strike massacre. They will simply die like flies and a might faction having a combination leadership/luck/attack/defense/light/enlightenment will win with ease.

true, but this goes for pretty much ANY ultimate out there except maybe absolute protection and unstoppable charge(and even then im just talking about the dying like flies part, not the losing part). which is why nobody should go for ultimates unless they can someshow get the heroes to lvl 30+

also i was comparing the ultimates to each other mainly, not if they would actually work in any serious multiplayer, because none of them would, unless it's some game where you play 6+ months with heroes above lvl 30.

though, after the lucky 1st strike, it may not remain enough of your army to put a good fight, especially if the ranger is fighting on familiar ground.

does that count as having 10 in chance? I mean, does it consider you have luck 10 for the special ability of the crystal dragon?

Warlock's ultimate is one of the most efficient and effective ones to go for cos the build is perfect (luck, sorcery, dest magic) everything a warlock needs!

So it goes to show that Ultimates aren't really the way to go in big maps where you get your hero level 25+....but I would like to give my opinion on which skills benefit which factions the most in isolation (maybe need to do this on another post):

Haven Defense
Dwarves Defense
Orcs Attack
Demons Attack
Sylvan Luck
Wizard Summ magic
Warlock Dest magic
Necro Dark magic

I couldn't resist making a test

So I started as Naadir on the Heritage map where there is plenty of time to learn Howl of Terror. After a month I had to restart as his two magic schools made level ups too messy.

The second try was with Vladimir. I learned Banshee howl at the very first level and then (as with Naadir) I had some very nice creeping where the only things I needed were skeleton archers, banshee howl, raise dead and fire trap. Mark of the Necromancer came a little later but I was lucky and got an extra knowledge point very early. I returned home and learned frenzy so I could raid the full utopia in week 4. Controlling the level ups with Vladimir was very easy and I got HoT on level 23 as one should (no luck with witch huts).

Banshee howl isn't great but every bit helps. The initiative reduction allowed my archers to shoot before the enemy a little more often, and several times an enemy that was about to act got bad morale so that Vladimir could cast raise dead on the archers who then had the numbers and firepower to shoot the enemy and end the battle with no losses.

Banshee howl and Howl of terror works on black dragons and units immune to mind control. Minotaurs always have positive morale. And is perfectly logical that gargoyles can have positive morale but cannot be affected by HoT because they’re elemental.

This is a replay of the most epic battle in my test. Watch an AI ranger with a flaming arrows double ballista and especially how my Howl of terror horrifies his army (ok, their morale was never great as almost every faction’s top tiers are included in the army).
I had a small army so that the enemy shouldn’t flee at once and my plan was to win by abusing dark magic. It worked well. In a more normal battle with huge armies howl of terror together with (mass) weakness and suffering would  have made the enemy very undamaging. When it’s hard to loose it’s easy to win.
However, Howl of Terror actually worked against me in this battle. I puppeted the dragons asap but thanks to bad morale they rarely acted which allowed the titans and the ballista to nuke me.

I’ve also been thinking about the sorrow spell. It’s effect is almost like a Howl of Terror directed at one unit, and this is obviously good. But since expert dark is needed for this it is of limited use early and later there are even better spells. Perhaps it's especially good for knights and demon lords who always need to buy time for shooting and gating. What do you think?

Good idea!

Another thing I noticed is that Sorrow works units immune to mind control, as one could expect.

Especially useful for fighting titans and berserkers, but it may work on gargoyles and some others as well.
