Religion. That's right; quite possibly the most requested major addition to the game is coming in the Gods & Kings expansion. Using the new "Faith" resource, you'll be able to found your own religion and grow it from a simple Pantheon of the Gods to a world-spanning fully-customized religion.

Very interesting. That might just make me wanna play some Civ5 - Guess Civs are now like Ubi HoMM games - they need expansion packs to work

They work but they don't shine that good on their own.

But tbh same can be said for Civ4, is there any way BtS doesn't stand as far superior to vanilla?

Civ4 was really good on its own though. BtS is exceptional, but the basis on which is was build was already very good.

H5 imo was a good game in the vanilla edition... but the difference with TotE is astronomical, and for the better.

I think Civ 4 vanilla was a great game up to around the Industrial era. Problem was that after that, there was not a lot of things to do (other than going to war).

Civ 5 has pretty much the same problem, late game is just not that fun. City building is over (either land is claimed, or it's too bothersome with new cities that hold you off national wonders), terrain is improved etc. Sure there comes Railroad, but even that is quickly managed.

I'm not sure that this expansion will actually help that much with the late-game issues. There will be intelligence, but hopefully it will be less bothersome than in Civ 4 (where AI civs kept spamming spies into your cities to destroy buildings, while I couldn't be bothered to spend my time doing the same, hence I usually turned it off). Coorporations added a really nice flavor to late game, but they don't have this included here.

I'm also curious to see how the Religion will work. I'm a little woried by reading that religion will have major influence on your early game interaction with other Civs. That was one of my main gripes with Civ 4 - if you had another religion than about half of the leaders (Isabella was notorious, but many others also), it was instant and permanent war. That completely undermined any attempt at diplomatic relationship, because turning to their religion simply was not beneficial for you, and spreading religion in their lands was difficult if they wouldn't even open their borders to you.

I'm kinda hoping they add some kind of inquisition options to remove enemy religions from your land in this

I think civ4 was most fun in the ancient era. Building first cities, watching their fast growth, getting tech advantage over neighbors, racing towards the best spots... and the hut hunt. The thrill of finding a 3x diamonds 2x cows spot near your main city... It was fun. In later parts of the game micromanaging a single city was usually hard to notice in the big picture and there were terrain improvements everywhere, indeed making it either a wargame, or a boring next-turn-please game. I think it's most fun when you don't have 9001 cities, but having 5-8 still doesn't solve the fact that single decisions within those cities don't have much effect on the gameplay.

conclusion: micromanagement > macromanagement, at least for me.

Just read the news here. O.O THe expansion content looks awesome so far and may indeed lift up H5 highly in my eyes. Customizable Religions! Enhanced Diplomacy (god, how m uch taht was needed!)

For the discussion...Civ5 somehow had same issues as H4 to me: Wonderfull ideas, but not really good in the whole...I think these expansion may solve some of the issues, though not all...

Dad bought Gods and Kings. The last 4 hours, I've been testing it.

I can say it makes the game actually quite playable. CITY STATES especially are great now. You don't need to give them gold, accumilating a certain amount of Culture, Techs or Faith (a new factor that influences religion) without a certain time frame actually is enough to ensnare a couple of city states.

ESPIONAGE is the biggest surprise for me, and something ALC will like. It's completely different from CIV4, and thank godness for that. It's actually rly easy and fun to operate (rather than tedious and annoying)

Religion is also rly fun to operate. That + Piety means you can get quite a lot of favour from city states, culture and gold/happiness in the process.

Furthermore there are IMPORTANT tweaks to diplomacy, warfare, the tech tree, economics and gameplay that REALLY make the game so much better. Every 5th game in an important series having a TotE <3
