Why is it everything has to be so snowingly annoying and cumbersome in modern day gaming world. This Steam thing that I'm stuck with when I want to play this game, it exactly never does what I want.

Anyway, I need some help: It used to always update my game (when I didn't want it to), and now I want it to update, because I haven't played a while, and it does ... nothing. How do I get the stupid thing to update the game? There doesn't seem to be any options in neither the game nor Steam to manually update, and my game is not up to most recent version.

Right click on the game in the game list. Chose "properties." Go to the "Update" tab and chose "Always keep this game up to date."

Yeah, it already says that. But none-the-less, my game is v. 1.1.348, and when I download mods, it says they are for 1.1.366, which obviously then must be the latest version. Plus, I can see in the news saction game was updated in june and july which I haven't downloaded.

Under "properties"--->"local files" did you try "verify integrity of game cache?"

You might have to delete the game and reinstall it like this guy did.

I guess I'll try to look into either of those. Thanx for the help, and curse them that things have to be so difficult.

Did you people like this game? 'Cause I really didn't and would like to know your opinions on it. Every nation's army is nearly exactly same except for 1 or 2 nation unique units. So what's the point of choosing a nation? :/ And the battle system is somewhat ambigious. If one side has guns, it wins. If two sides have guns, its like draw game. I win the battles the game says are too hard for me, etc. They are not really fun

Well are you talking about Civ in general or Civ 5 specifically? Because it's always been so that all nations have pretty much the same army. For me, Civ is the ultimate computer game ever. Civ 5 made, perhaps for the first time in the series' history, some pretty radical changes to the gameplay, and the result was so-and-so (as seems to be always the case when you make radical changes to something that works).

I think Civ 4 was the best game of the series, but it had its weaknesses, particularly it was too defensive for me - AI would always have dozens (literally) of stacks in their town, so capturing a town was a litteral nightmare that took forever. So I found playing aggressively in Civ 4 somewhat bothersome, but then I've always played very much like a builder, so I didn't mind that too much.

Civ 5 deffinitely is much more offensive in that it is really easy to capture enemy towns - too easy, in fact. So while I did appreciate some of the ideas - the 'one unit in each tile' concept was probably not a bad idea - it did have some issues with balance. But I think with some of the mods people made it was still a great game.

Civ5 is (still) far far too easy compared to civ4.

Btw Alci, if the AI is stupid enough to amass everything in towns then let the artillery reign

I like the Civ series and Civ 5. One unit per tile adds in another strategic element.

Yeah, most of the units are the same. But the unique units to each civ AND the leader's ability can make the civs play a lot differently. And of course the policies you chose will affect your play style as well.

There is some element of chance but in general you should lose the battles where the computer predicts your defeat. But if you make use of terrain weaker units can still stand a chance against more advanced units.

If you haven't played it in a while, there have been a number of patches that came out that made some changes that maybe made the game a little more difficult. I did not start playing the game when it came out so I really can't say. I have not tried a warmongering strategy yet so I don't know how easy a domination victory is. I've been concentrating on learning science and culture builds and how to build up my infrastructure to support those.

Like I mentioned above, it's been a while since I played last. I hope I can get my other computer (where the game is installed) to upgrade it so I can have the benefit of those patches.

Yeah, I just seem to recall that even with 10 catapults, I could use many MANY turns to capture towns. Longbowmen ...

But think about it, with city raider and collateral promotions your artillery will become unstoppable (not to mention the bonus you get once you upgrade them to trebuchets )

Yeah, I probably just sucked at warmonging, but every time I tried to build an army that actually worked, it cost me so many ressources that I completely lost out on all technology departments, and then suddenly somebody would raid me with rifflemen when I was trying to bash someone else with medieval units.

Did you build specialist cities? Those are invaluable especially to higher level warmongers.

If you are playing on lower difficulties (below emperor) then you could easily recruit other warmongers (Monty, Shaka, Alex, Napoleon to name a few) to help you in the war

I did have specialist cities, yeah, but I never hired anybody to go with me. I think I normally played Prince or King difficulty so not the highest levels.

If you have no allies to go with you, use espionage to its full extent,
For example, 1 turn of city revolt completely nullifies defense bonuses.

And if you did have specialist cities and still didn't stay ahead of AI then something went wrong somewhere along the road

I think I played with espionage disabled, because it was one of the game features I found less succesfull. But I hardly remember, it's been a while since I played Civ 4.

In reading the Civ Fanatics forums I see that some people go "wide" for a science victory. Lots of small cities. I've been going "tall." I only had 7 cities in my last game but they all had populations over 20. Some were around 28, which is the biggest I've been able to grow them so far.

In the early game I use gold to buy bowmen when I can so I don't have to devote as many hammers to building troops. And if I see a civ spamming cities towards me I know he is about to attack so I make sure I am ready. I put the bowmen on hills when possible so they can fire over the trees and other hills. The warriors can stand in rough terrain and tank and heal while the bowmen do their thing.

One thing I don't like about the civ diplomacy is you can be friendly with a leader and have good trade and research agreements with him and he still may stab you in the back. I've started agreeing to early open border trades but later in the game I keep my borders closed to everyone. In my last game my culture was good and so in most places I had control of 5 tiles off my coast. With subs stationed around, and bombers and guided missiles ready there is no way anyone would be able  to get through my defenses with any significant number of troops.

With the current patches in order, I can state that CIV5 has become a pretty balanced game imo. (especially on a militaristic, diplomatic, social and economical level) They fixed most of the biases and problems.

These are the only problems that imo remain:

1) AI is belligerent, yet after a mere few skirmishes, they are willing to sign a beneficial (to you) peace treaty. Even former psychos like Hiawatha, Montezuma or the Khan have turned into wimps.

2) Some Civs are incredibly weak in comparison to others and vice versa (America, Denmark, Spain, The Ottomans; in comparison to Russia, China, France, The Inca, The Iroquois, Arabia, etc)

That's it though. It has definitely improved since its first release and is definitely playable by now.

> all policy trees are actually usefull now. I mean, if you go for a Cultural Victory, you will now actually deviate from the otherwise obvious path of Honor-Piety-Patronage-Freedom-Order, as Both Tradition and Liberty were strongly improved, Authoritarianism doesn't not oppose Liberty anymore, Commerce always was a useful tree, and the overpowered Order has been nerfed, making it a much less obvious pick.

The only real problem with the policies is Piety, and while this one has been mercifully nerfed just as the other OP trees were (like Order), it is still much, much stronger than its opposite Tree Rationalism. (Unless you are playing in the jungle, in which case Rationalism is RIDICULOUSLY powerful).

> Unit balance has been fixed. The days of the Horseman rush have ended for a LONG time now, and every unit has its benefits. However, there still are a couple of exceptions (Chu-Ko-Nus, you can take down a whole city or Army with just two of them; Longbowmen which can take (on) a whole city on its OWN, and of course the hilarious Giant Death Robots)

> AI is still questionable and the weak point, however, Diplomacy has actually become usefull. Since it is really easy to annoy other players, a few Declarations of Friendship will definitely contribute to keep yourselves safe from enemy attacks. Obviously, it is useless when your neighbor is Hiawatha, but eh, you can't have anything.

> Tile Improvement has been improved greatly (especially in the endgame), and as of now spamming trading posts everywhere is NOT the best option. Great persons have also been improved, as you might actually spend a couple of them on creating their unique building.

> Buildings have been improved: Defencive structures now DON'T cost any money, and with the right amount of Social policies, you can actually be willing to build up your cities to the max. Building Maintenance has also been cut, which only reinforces this. Some buildings which you would otherwise skip, like the Castle, Stable, Monastary, Granary, Water Wheel (and others) have become structures you would construct in literally EVERY town you can build them in.

> Wonders, particularly the early ones were increased in strength, and you should definitely try to build at least one of them, if possible.

I would say ... play it, and enjoy ^__^

I can tell that some UU are still far from nerfed.

Namely the Arab camel archers and German Panzers, those 2 still dominate pretty much ANYTHING you toss against them
