Headhunting and other Zone-etiquette

If someone is on the zone and their name is not on the list of people who are trying to get a game going and you don't know them then chances are they don't want to play or are already playing.

I hate when I'm waiting for someone or I'm in a game and leaving my ZM's open because I am expecting a message from a friend and my messages keep popping up with people I don't even know asking for a game.

And it's not even a decent way to ask.

It's always "game?"

I normally reply "Sure, how bout TicTacToe."

Or "toh?". What the hell does that mean? I know what it means but it's just neanderthalish to send a stranger a message like that.

I usually say "No, Mocara."

Or worse yet is when someone says "points/handle?".

Look dude I don't even want to play you let alone be interviewed by you.

When I want to play someone I look and see if they are "waiting". If they are I ask for the password.

If I want to know their rank then I go to TOH and look them up in player search. If they are using a different name then I may will ask them their rank if they are looking for a game. But not right off. First I will introduce myself and use some basic manners.

The basic rule is if someone wants to play you will know about it because they will set up a room.

If you set up a room it is right there for everyone to see. Do not spam the room with stupid comments about how everyone should come to your room. Those who want to play are clicking through the rooms and seeing what their options are.

I know only the smart people read the board anyway so these points will be lost on the people who truly need to read them.

I'm glad you brought this up Moc (moke? or mock? LOL). I find a lot of people are fairly rude in their approach and as a result, I lose some of my composure sometimes. But that's the challenge you have to face up to when hosting a game, you're instantly a target for other people who think that they have the right to know everything about you just because you're the host and they can see you're waiting for a game.

I never give out my TOH handle to idiots who approach me in this way and the chances are, even if I'm desperate, I would rather wait another half hour instead of play them.

Here are some rules for me:

If I don't know you, I won't play you straight off the bat.

If I don't know you, you better try some better pick up lines than the ones that Mocara mentioned in order to get my interest. A casual chat is a good way for me to consider giving out my password. I like to know something about the player's background, otherwise it may turn out to be a very quiet game. I'm always in the mood for talktative games with interesting people, it makes the sting of losing easier to bear. It's no fun losing against a guy called Megatron34435 with handle name Megatron34435 (don't worry that's a made up name!). Come to think of it, a game where I don't have some connection with the player is often kindof boring, win or lose.

If I do know you, then you can be as rude as hell to me, LOL

If I do know you, then you know my password and therefore you are welcome to join.

There is a certain ettiquette in Zone, even though I myself might not adhere to it all the time (blame the liquor!), but I always try to start off a game initiation with the word 'Hiya!'

*smile*

Does etiquette really help you to get games?

Ladies and Gentlemen,

A "sad" story... as I have a job and a family (both demanding :-)) my spare time is scarce, and when I manage to sneak into the computer room to feed my addiction to this damned game it's usually late and I really can't afford to wait for an hour or more to get a game started...

Under these circumstances, I guess I am one of the less demanding players regarding the selection of opponents. :-)

You're a colonel ranked 1700+? Great, I'll play you. Oh, wait you're a cadet ranked 1000? Ok, I'll play you too :-)

You want a no-rules game? Great, I'll play you. Oh, you want a no-grail, no this no that game? Fine, I'll play you too. Just be sure to explain them carefully so we won't have to argue over it later :-)

You want a closed map? Fine, we'll do HG. An open map? Sure, let's do BfH. Wait, now you want a random? I'm game too. :-)

You want a friendly, talkative game? Cool, I'm from Brazil, how about you? :-) You want a straight, objective game? Ok, launch the damn game :-)

Why is it so that it sometimes takes me so long to get a game? Maybe I_smell? No, wait that's another player :-)

I wished I was a retired worker so I'd have more time to play. Oh, this date is approaching fast, only about 30 years from now :-)

Cheers,

adding

If the person is not in the heroes room, but logged on to z-friends. Dont zone message him for a game!
If he was in the zone ok a little better.
I mean if you have never played or know even this person.
This can be very annoying.

I sometimes exit the zone when I am in a game. So friends can get a hold of me when I am playing. So you may cost me the game, 2 minute turns. Because your zone message always comes during my turn.

Not mention their are other games that can be played through the zone. I usually only play heroes tho.
But still if they aint in the heroes room they prolly dont want to play you.

my favorites

My favorite people are the ones that don't understand a player can resume out of a game and appear to be waiting, or looking. And when you tell them that you're already playing, they point out to you that you are not - because their screen says otherwise  Its nice having these guys around, otherwise i'd never know what i was doing!
Good Luck and Have Fun!

or when they ask me in engish and then i say nah or naw, and they cant understand that.

oh and love when i say im playing or no and they go off on me because they have something in their minds that im lieing to them just to get on their nerves

no offence to anyone. these here language barriers are mighty thick

Language

Yep, language might be a hard task to solve, but for people like the Finns (i`m not finnish) thay will have no chance getting a game if they write their own language. Thay have to try talking to all you english speekin people.

Regarding, appearing on "waiting" when playing. I guess not all people know the different ways to connect. Some might not know how to connect through IP, I learned this first a few months after starting playin in the zone. For them it`s quite clear that if you don`t appear under "playing" you don`t play. (even if you do) Why not try to explain to them that you are connected in a different way - then they know and maybe they will not disturb you again.

Actually Im afraid I have to agree with Armor

Last couple of days Ive tried to educate people about good manners. Like when they are asking "Handle?" or even worse "Rank?" when im just on waiting for someone. When i politely tells them that its common decency to introduce urself first, the answer i gets vary from "Are u gay?" to something much less worth reading.

Guess I dont mind being asked if Im gay, its just not the right context, or what do u think??

But guess Im just a bit touchy these days

Gay?

I agree!

What is the point of asking "Are you gay?". The only idea by asking this question is to offend the one you ask. If a person you play once or twice at your computer and will probably never meet is gay or not, so what? I mean: Does a persons sexual preferences make him/her a different type of player? Don`t think so!

Yeah I think I mentioned that part about preaching to the choir here when I first started it.

If the tree falls and only the decent people hear it will it keep the rude people from cutting another down?

What is the sound of one newbie clapping?

Anyway I used to just close the ZM window on rude people.

Now I keep this thread in my bookmarks and just paste it in as my response to "toh?".

Maybe they don't (or can't) read it but at least it's quicker and doesn't cause people to ask me if I'm gay.

If they asked me that I think I'd say "Sure sailor, gimme your address.". Then you could bet they wouldn't ask me for a game again. =)

handling unwanted zm's

Just a thought but if you are just waiting for some friend to zm you while you are playing and don't want to be pulled out of a game during your turn.  Why not just set your zm's so they don't pop to top window.  Then you can play your turn and recieve as many zm's as anyone cares to send you and you don't need to worry about them until you end your turn and check to see if you have any?

It won't help with getting messages with poor manners or rude remarks, but at least it will stop them from effecting your game (unless they completely fluster you ).

So Moc, youŽre saying that when I come back to playing in about 3 months, after 15 months without it, to get a game IŽll have to write more then "game?" to get it?

Sometimes youŽre just too cruel...:-)
