well, if you put it that way...

The problem with my book is that the script grew so huge it would take me ages to write it I'm also constantly removing things that come from a distant past, back when I was inspired by other fantasy... I don't want plagiarism, unintended or not.

I'd like to write a book. I have a lot of imagination which I think would be awesome. But I'd never write a book about a world that could be in my head anyway. Rather I'd make it like the type where the person in the book makes choices based on how they see the character they choose and can be combined with several readers.

Also, I'd never write a book like in the old days, having to reuse the same setup again and again, but having to start all over. Rather I'd try to create a logical system where with relevant variables where I then could combine these different setups and form a story quickly, but with high quality.

Like you know, you've it all in your head and you can call it with thoughts so easy, the system used there makes it quite easy, but memory often can't have everything at once. With writing it's exactly the opposite. The text have an 'unending' memory, but the thoughts set into it requires a lot more time. There's no reason these can't be combined, but the hard part is doing it.

[Like when making a program, I think most people use already inbuild commands, or commands they make themselves, this way they can quicker create what they want, (e.g. for a computer game, you want a forest, you can either do it the hard way creating every single tree, etc. uniquely, or you can make a randomnized function that generates the forest through the physics you define (and if you want it to look like a real forest, you'd use real life physics), and then you can reroll until you're satisfied and make the unique changes that wasn't part of the function/package/system/commands, or even better create your own function for this specific feature to better the earlier used function), and in general there's no reason a book can't be made the exact same way, without loosing any uniqueness].

Hmm... Dagoth - I just think the key elements of fantasy, orcs, elves, dwarves and all those original fantasy elements have to be paid tribute to!

I love it when people use 'em, but twist them into their world  -and Paolini's books are good, just about to start with the third one - hoping for a little less politics, but else I know he can do it

And for names, names are everything - I would love to make intertexualities with names, calling characters after famous fantasy characters, philosophers - but not like calling a guy: Aragon, but perhaps use the Ara and gon in his full name... Name people after some people who inspired me.. Really make names important and meaningful

PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE KOMBAT

Why? You're bringing nothing new to the genre, stealing plot devices from other writers and are forced to just create the lord of the rings again. There are other ways you can go with fantasy! It doesn't always have to be the same damn thing. Warcraft at least mixed it up by adding demons and undead beings to their world and they gave a sort of post-modern twist to it, making orcs honourable and some such.

You're not creating, you're copying. You're not doing what is yours, you're doing what others did before you. If you have such little content that you must take after other writers, perhaps you shouldn't be involved with the craft at all.

I know I'm a killjoy, but seriously, works that are basically rehashes, rewrites or copies shouldn't be considered great.

Look at me, I'm opinionated about art!

But I am talking about paying Tribute to the great authors - and as I said: I wont call a main character a famous name, but try to mix it into  and make people think, "hey if you turn that around it makes"

And I would diffently go with Blizzards POV on Orcs.. Orcs are honorable warriors

With Dagoth on this one.

As you read and write more, you'll understand there are other, more mature, meaningful and artistic ways of paying tribute to a great writer.

Frankly, I think they would prefer people to become original authors just like they were, than endlessly rehash what they came up with 60 years ago, what has been chewed and rechewed a dozen times, and call it tribute. That'd be like paying homage to Monty Python by becoming a standup comedian and retelling their jokes (just with parrots replaced with pigeons) instead of making your own. It's no tribute, it's bloody boring and it undermines any writing talent you might have in you.

As my girlfriend says, when you open a book and see a map on the first page, you can usually guess 90% of the storyline without even looking at it. And that's the cancer that's killing fantasy.

There are no orcs in my fantasy universe.
Okay, I admit that I always had a race inspired by Orcs (cept they arent evil, no race is evil) but they do not appear in the trilogy that I am writing. The main enemy race in my book are a norse-inspired race that resemble half-giant that are called the nordyr. The humans will also fight each other in Book 2 in a civil war.

They are only called Snow elves because they look like Snow elves. Snow elves would be what the humans named them since they looked like Wood elves who they already knew existed and even shared culture with way back.

The Snow elves came from a faction idea here on HC. A faction that I made for a contest. The town looked like a huge Spire and the Snow elven capital city is located right at the north pole (The Arctic Plataeu/Boreanos) and their capital is a big spire surroanded by several other smaller spires.
They are one of the most important races and they are the most intelligent race. They have gotten their powers and enlightenment from a source of power that they also use a weapon. The power source is sentient and they use their most powerful mages to control it.

The Snow elves have very advanced technology that is on the very border to science fiction.
They "observe" all other races and they see it as their duty to "watch over" the planet since they are the most powerful and enlightened race on the planet.

The first book starts with a prologue and a council between two Snow elven diplomats (one of them becomes kind of like a "main side-character") and the leaders of the Wood elven land of Sylvar (yes, chessy name but I started created this universe when I was like 10 years old and I may have gotten some influences from other franchises then...).

The Snow elves see that humanity is close to war with the far more powerful Nordyr and want to help them. They do, but withdraw their military assistance when one of their ships fall at the end of the second book. They are the ones that teach humans how to manipulate Ley energies (aka general magic) so that the humans can defend themselves against the nordyr easier (even though they started the war in the book themselves, or well they didnt put who that really started it is a third party reveald at the end of the last book - TWIST).

However, in the second book - the church sees the new "mages" as a threat to them and their religion. The nobles also think that magic could be a powerful weapon against them. Both the church and the nobles feel threatened by it, and with their pressure the king (lucifere) bans practise of magic throughout his kingdom and it leads to a civil war.

If you think you're being innovative again, you should read the "orcs"-trilogy (Guardian of lightning being the first books) by Stan Nicholls. Though, now that I think of it... Orcs kind of was just a post-modern take on standard fanasy (I'm with yahtzee on this one: it feels bad that "standard fantasy" is a totally viable term).

Say, xerox, does your story have any drama? Or is it just factions stomping all over each other and political intrigue?

EDIT: Come back. I need to put you down some more!

This is the basic synopis of the first book.

Book 1: Nordmarkerna (swedish) - Daeroden yn Gardos (aevlonian) - The Northlands/The Northern Grounds (english)

The book opens with a prologue chapter. Two Snow elven diplomats known as Zelinde and Vylthar have been sent to the Wood elven capital city of Shiromar to discuss the future of humanity.
The humans of the Kingdom are close to war with the nordyr of the Northern Grounds. During the council, it becomes clear that the Wood elves have no intention of helping the humans in their own war. The humans should face the consequences and learn from it. The snow elves claim that the nordyr would easily crush the human civilization and that would be a pity. However, according to a Wood elven legend one of the young races (in mind, not physically) will take responsibility in the future and save the world from its doom. The Wood elves believe that after order has passed, chaos must come. However, one of their religious leader says that this is not a reason to save humantiy as in the end, chaos must come and order must pass for the world to reborn.
At the end of the prologue, Zelinde (who has been with the wood elves for a long time) expect to be sent home to the Snow elven capital city. However, she is granted a new mission.
Infilitrate the human nobility and spy on them and try to prevent war against the Nordyr.

The first real chapter introduces one of the main characters in the book. Cedrik is the son of the commander Bran in the human military. His mother is dead and his father has been sent away on a mission to defend a remote human village from a nordyr expansion.
He is teased by other young people in the city and at night he dreams of his father fighting the nordyr in the town. In the dream, they lose and are forced to retreat.
Some time later, news reach that his father has indeed failed with his mission to defend a remote human village that is actually located in the Nordyrs territory and that he is on his way home.

Early in the book, the reader is introduced to King Lucifere himself. The first time you met him, he has a lot of meeting going on and is going to talk to Cedriks father Bran as he must be punished by his failure. He also has a lot of meetings and concerns about there being several more nordyr attacks on remote settlements.
Lucifere invites Bran and Cedrik to the coliseum where they will talk.

Later King Lucifere is trying to sleep in his tower in Aebron Castle. He dreams about three things. First it is a flashback from when he was a little boy and his father and mother had arranged a family gathering coupled together with his fathers birthday at one of their mansions close to the border of the Northern Grounds.
There, Nordyr raiders suddenly attack. He and his sister are the only survivors and the guards arrive to late.
In the second dream there is also a flashback. At a young age, he becomes King and his beloved sister is separated from him as they do not want her to stand in his way in the future.
The third dream however is a vision of the future. His wife Argwyn and child Wera are on a "vacation" in the province of Dalriek. He dreams that Wera runs off to play in the forest. She does not come back to her mother and her mother comes to look for her. They are both murdered by somebody.

Lucifere is worried and flies with his own gryphon to Dalriek. There, it is already to late. His wife and the queen Argwyn is alive but their daughter has been killed. No wounds can be found but priests discover that she has been slain by natural magic and they come to the conclusion that it is a Nordyr spellcaster.
This breaks down Lucifere. His parents and family died at the hands of the Nordyr and now they have likely killed his daughter aswell. Lucifere locks in Argwyn under their castle for her own safety and prepares for war. He asks his personal guards to cut through his daughters body so that she would show great wounds.
When he announches war agains the nordyr to his people in Aebron, he hangs up his now mangled daugthers body in the greatest square in the city and shows her as an example of nordyr cruelty.

Previously, he invited Cedrik and his father Bran to a coliseum match so that they would decide Brans punishment since he failed defending a village. This happens and Lucifere mentions that before he can launch an invasion on the Northern Grounds, he needs scouts in there and he also claims that he actually does not want war, but want council with the Nordyrs own king about their recent attacks on remote human villages in provinces such as Arkendal.
Brans punishment is that his son will be sent to the capital of the Nordyr within the Northern Grounds and council with their king aswell as reporting anything of interests that he sees in the Northern Grounds. Cedriks father is shocked and when they get home, he suggests them to flee to the independant human kingdom of Sanciel. But Cedriks says that he wants to do the Kingdom a favor and that if war can be stopped, he would gladly be the one to do that.

Cedrik would not be going alone to the Northern Grounds though. He is sent to the Churchs own HQ in a province in the southern Kingdom. He is to meet one of their priestesses, Aela. When he arrives, Aela is not there but it is revealed that she is on a mission with a paladin in a distant province to the southwest. When at the churches HQ, he finds a cloaked priestess that he almost feels like she is spying on him. He does not think more about it though and prepares his journey by boat that will go through the marshes in the west.

The ship there is attacked by river pirates and their ship is sabotaged so Cedrik and the other people that were on the ship will need to walk through the marshes to get to the town where Aela is. On the way, they are ambushed by everything from bandits to gnarls (honestly, gnarls are my version of gnolls but dont tell anyone). They finally reach the town though and Cedrik find Aela and her Paladin friend in a tavern. The paladin is drunk and Cedrik finds Aela and speaks to her. Aela says that she need to finish her mission her before she can move on to other things. Aela asks Cedrik to help her with her mission in the marshes. Apparently, the gnarls have done dealing with a local necromancer. Apparently, they have some kind of deal and the necromancer gets corpses from the gnarls that he is experimenting on. Aela, Cedrik and the so far unamed Paladin gets to the gnarl camp exactly when the necromancer appears to gain more corpses from them. The gnarls used to be passive but have begun killing people on the countryside to gather corpses for him.
They confront the necromancer and fight him and undead gnarls. The necromancer appears to carry a seal that seems like a modification of the church seals. They bring it back to the mayor of the town and then leave it to get back to the Churchs HQ.

The way home goes fine and Aela realizes that the king himself has given them the mission to go to the Northern Grounds. Aela gets her own mission to the church, to spread the message of their religion - the Holy Sun or Aureia na Lys - to remote and pagan villages in the Northern Grounds.

They travel through the Kingdom and are on their way to the city of Eagle Crest or Kardyrek in aevlonian to meet their guide through the Northern Grounds. On the way, they meet a sick boy in a village. He has a disease and is dying. Aela uses her healing powers to ressurect him though and bring him back to the world of the living. Cedrik thinks a lot about this.

When they arrive in Eagle Crest they are shocked when they found out that it is a half-nordyr half-human criminal who had been killing nobles in Aebron recently (this is featured in the earlier chapters). The priests believe that they have made him swore to Aureia to obey them and lead the way to the nordyrs capital.
The man who is known as Einar.
They stay in Eagle Crest for two weeks before they leave for the Northern Grounds and while there, Cedrik brings Aela to his mothers grave for she is buried in the city. He begs Aela to ressurect her for she died when he was just a baby and he does not remember her. Aela explains that ressurection takes a lot of energy and that only people that have died very, very recently can be ressurected and that ressurected people often become vengeful and angry after having being ripped away from their passage to the dimension of the deceased.

The two weeks pass and they are on their way to the most remote province of the Kingdom, Arkendal. It is the last stop before they officialy enter the Northern Grounds though the nordyr already have a fortress here and military prescense.

While they wander throgh the woodland in Arkendal, King Lucifere travels himself to the city-province of Eagle Crest to speak to their leader Sangirah. Sangirah is a black human and her story is basically that she comes from a distant human land in the south and her village was attacked by bandits. She fleed to a harbor which the Kingdom trades with. As a lone homeless girl she was soon bought as a slave by Lord Arekh who ruled over Eagle Crest at the time.
Sangirah however challenged him to a duel to free herself in Eagle Crests famous and huge coliseum. Sangirah woman and Arekh died from his wounds. As a warriors province, Sangirah was approved as the new leader of Eagle Crest. Eagle Crest houses much of the Kingdoms military forces and Lucifere speaks to her about the planned invasion of the Northern Grounds.

Somewhere in the Kingdom, the snow elf Zelinde contacts her masters in the Silver City and speaks about the recent news in the Kingdom. She explains that war can not be stopped and that the Snow elves will have to prepare a warship soon to help the humans. She also says that they sent a young boy to council with their king. She says that as an invasion can not be prevented from being planned in the Kingdom, she will help the young boy and his friends to council with the Nordyrs leaders.

While wandering through the woods of Arkendal, Cedrik feels like somebody is spying on them. He briefly seems to see the cloaked priestess he saw in the churches HQ.
They are also ambushed by the werewolf-like people known as the Vargulf and the guards that where escorting them to Arkendals capital of Nidaros flees. They are saved by Arkendals own elite force of archers who are known as the Khryden Awlind and they escort them to Nidaros.

They rest some time in Nidaros and prepare to journey through the Northern Grounds.
After crossing the lake that Nidaros sits on, they are in Nordyr territory. They need to cross a large mire and there Cedrik and Aela loses Einar and they are captured by pagan humans who are supported by the nordyr. Aela is to be burnt as a witch since she is a priestess of Aureia and Cedrik hung.
During the night, a cloaked female figure kills the people guarding their cages. Cedrik sees that it is the priestess he saw at the churchs HQ and that he has been suspecting following them for a long time. At first, Cedrik is sure that she is going to kill them herselves but then she notices that something is different with her. She takes off her hood and there stands no human, but an elf. It is Zelinde that has been stalking them for a long time. Zelinde says that she knows where Einar is and will lead them to him.

Zelinde joins the group now and they move further into the Northern Grounds. Zelinde and Aela does not like each other. Aela is a very religious person and Zelinde just calls all of that bullsnow and explains the basics of magic to prove that it is not some power sent by Aureia.
In Arkendal, the Khryden Awlind ambushes a Nordyr messenger and see that he was sending orders to the nordyr fortress of Fellwik in the region to prepare their forces for an invasion on Eagle Crest to prove their dominance. The Khryden Awlind go back to Nidaros and reports to King Lucifere that the Nordyr are planning to invade the Kingdom themselves.

Cedrik, Aela, Einar and Zelinde soon reach a runestone. Zelinde explains that she has political matters to adress in her homecity. The Snow elves are deciding to help or not to help the humans and she must be there. She gives Cedrik an amulet and she can speak to him through it. She explains that the runestones act as an invisible wall that protects the inner Northern Grounds. No army can pass into the Northern Grounds without their destruction. She says that she can use her powers to let them through and she does before she leaves them.

The group spots the Nordyr army marching southeast, towards the Kingdom. Cedrik is horrified. He had no idea the Nordyr were marching against the Kingdom itself. Einar asks them if they did not already realize that they had been sent to the Northern Grounds to die. That Lucifere already has his own profesional scouts in the Northern Grounda and that the war has already been planned on both sides. After seeing the size of the Nordyr army and the wast amount of Nordyr settlements within the heart of their land, he decides to try and flee. He and Aela runs. Einar stands where he is and soon two Nordyr riding on great wolves come close to him. Einar sends them out to catch Cedrik and Aela.

The wolf riders catch them and they are imprisoned again. Einar comes to their prison and says that the only way they can reach the Nordyrs king is to pretend to be his prisoners. Apparently, Einar has a high rank within the Nordyr society. Cedrik does not want to believe that they have been sent to their death, what would the reason for that be? They agree with Einars plan. Einar takes them as his prisoners and lead them to the Nordyr island capital of Hjemgard.

Inside the fortress of Hjemgard, Aela and Cedrik stands before the king. The nordyrs kings thank Einar for bringing him these two supposed to spies. Einar is revealed to be the son of the Nordyr king and had been sent to spy on the Kingdom and assassinate human nobles. Einar is the product of his father raping a human.
Einar betrays Aela and Cedrik and they are placed in Hjemgards own prison cells.

In the meantime, the Nordyr army is close to Eagle Crest and the battle shall soon begin. The Siege of Eagle Crest begins.
Massive numbers of Nordyr gather outside the gates of Eagle Crest and the siege starts. The Nordyr quickly break into the city and King Lucifere and Sangirah fight in the battle. Lucifere has his own personal guards known as the Ilgalad Cwerd. They are extremly gifted human mages and nobody except the king knows about them.

In the Silver City, the Snow elves are observing the battle. Zelinde debates that they should help the humans or their kingdom will fall. She finds Cedrik very attractive herself... The Snow elves descision remains unclear.

The Nordyr Warlord seeks to kill King Lucifere during the battle and chases him to the famous coliseum in Eagle Crest.
The Nordyr swarm the entire city. Then, a huge flash appears. Suddenly, a Snow elven warship floats above the city and several flying vehicles come down from it. The Snow elves have arrived. Zelinde fights in the battle now and the with the Snow elves technology and magic, they turn the tide of the battle.

Inside the Coloseum, a glorious duel takes place between King Lucifere and the Nordyr warlord. The warlord is losing and in the last minute, his elite guards appears. Lucifere is forced to retreat and locks them inside the arena on the Coliseum floor.
Suddenly, the coliseum floor itself opens and the Nordyr Warlord and his guards drown in the water that is normally used for naval combat in the coliseum.
The nordyr soon realize that they are losing and that their warlord is nowhere to be seen. They are pushed back into the nearby woods. The battle is won, but only thanks to the Snow elves.

Following the battle, Zelinde and the Snow elves speak to King Lucifere. He is very impressed by their powers and Zelinde introduces herself and the Snow elven people to him. She offers the humans to learn how to manipulate Ley eneriges and use basic magic to help them in their war against the Nordyr. King Lucifere appears.
Later, Zelinde is alone with her old friend Vylthar who is a little side-character in the book and appears in the prologue aswell as scenes in the Silver City.
Vylthar asks Zelinde if it really is a good idea to introduce humans to magic. They would overpower most other races if they master it and it is a huge responsibility. Zelinde says she does not know but fears that when the Church gets to know about it, they might see it as a threat and a conflict within the Kingdom may appear. If the humans are not united, they would not have a chance against the Nordyr. Magic would atleast give them a small chance against the Nordyr though the Snow elves military assistance will probably judge the outcome of the war.

Far way from Eagle Crest, Cedrik and Aela sit in a prison cell. Cedrik is to be tortured for information but before he leaves her for the torture session, they finally kiss and if they had Facebook, they would probably had updated so that they were in a relationship with each other.

----

The second book would be about the civil war among the humans, the discovery of magic and the return of the true Queen.

nd eragon itself is just a star wars rip-off with a few twinges of lotr mixed in it (at least, if that one movie about it is any indication)

Those two don't drive the story at all. They're just details that show your respect to other authors or creative bakrupcy, depending on how you look at it. I tend to look at it as the latter and not the former.
I say that by making the allusion you'll be able to draw the attention to the contrast between the two works. Not sure why would someone want to do that, but if the author thinks that it's integral to the interpretation then why not.

There might be other uses that I fail to comprehend.

To be fair, if xerox ever gets published, I'd buy his book.

You may have a point there, I'll grant you that, but this is really beyond the author of fantasy literature. If a fantasy author makes "allusions" to other works, it means he isn't changing anything. I think you can be fairly certain of this 99.99% of the time with a fault margin of .01%.

I mean, Meyer makes allusions to Brontė and Shespeare all the time as well and look how appreciated and critically acclaimed her works are.
