Personal favorites, not necessarily which I think are the best heroes.
I often prefer the females over the males.

Tower: Neela
Inferno: Ash
Fortess: Verdish, Mirlanda
Rampart: Mephala, Gem
Dungeon: Lorelei
Stronghold: Gretchin
Necropolis: Vidomina
Conflux: Luna, Labetha

Males:
Castle: Rion
Tower: Theodorus
Inferno: Ayden
Fortress: Drakon
Rampart: Elleshar
Dungeon: Darkstorn
Stronghold: Yog, Crag
Necropolis: Sandro
Conflux: Grindan

Fortress - Alkin (swap the 'n' with 's' and you have the swedish word for a drunk)

Thats neat. I don't think I'll ever look at Alkin again without thinking this.
So Alkin is an alcoholic eh? Maybe thats why King Tralossk never really liked Alkin?

I play SoD so my list is:
Now:
Castle - Edric/Tyris/Adela
Rampart - Thogrim/Ryland/Ivor/Mephala
Tower - Neela
Inferno - n/a. I don't really play as Inferno.
Necropolis - Galthran/Tamika/Isra
Dungeon - Dace/Gunnar/Shakti/Jeddite (I rarely use him anymore though)
Stronghold - Krellion/Gundula/Tyraxor/Dessa/Terek/Jarbakas
Fotress - Tazar/Bron/Alkin
Conflux - n/a. I hate Conflux.

Childhood:
Castle - Christian/Adelaide
Rampart - Alagar
Tower - Solmyr/Astral
Inferno - Xyron
Necropolis - Septienna
Dungeon - Deemer
Stronghold - Tyraxor
Fortress - Andra/Drakon
Conflux - n/a. I only had the original game.

Thorgrim is my all time faveourite and Tazar ranks no. 2 on my list

Piquedram is the best.  Not only he starts with Scouting and Mysticism, often times the following available skills are Eagle Eye and Learning.  You can't go wrong with Piquedram.

For a water map I prefer Gem the Druid. Starting with Summon Boat gives a big advantage.

Solmyr for sure! If he gets a good starting army and troops from the town (If you can get them on your first day) he is ready to take on a large group of monsters guarding some good loot. Level him, give him knoweledge and spellpower and you have the hero of your dreams.
