Well in the non-fictious department and specially the philosophical department a great series is Frederick Copplestone`s "A History of Philosphy". Eventhough the guy is a theologist its seen as THE best series on that topic
But it aint a beginners guide, but up to about Hegel its outstanding, used it for a lot of my classes
Im probably more into physics than biology, but Paul Davies has written some great popular science books that spans across the two subjects, especially "The Cosmic Blueprints" about how chaos-theori might span across the difference between those 2 disciplines.

Otherwise theres always my 2 favourite popular science books. Richard Feynmanns "The character of Physical Laws" and Steven Weinbergs "Dreams of a Final Theory".

Allmost as funny as Calvin and Hobbes, theres the "Far Side Gallery" cant remember what the guy who writes them is called. Unfortunately I borrowed all of mine to my Ex, prolly aint gonna see those again.

William Gibson anyone?

I finished The Idoru a few weeks ago, and look forward to reading Neuromancer (I was about to type Necromancer...). It is amazing how this author sees the evolution of technology in the years to come. He might become the Jules Vernes of the current era...!

Orson Scott Card

If anyone enjoyed Ender's Game then there are two new books out featuring Bean and what happens on earth after the Formic war is won. I think the first one is called 'Ender's Shadow.' There wil be a third in that trilogy I believe. Te other books of the Ender saga are also interesting though not as good.

One person I never heard mentioned so far in this thread is Guy Gaveriel Kay- excellent writer! He has two awesome series out currently, and he is putting out a third which isn't as good in my opinion, but it's hard to top the Fianowar Tapestry.

SM Stirling has some good escapist military/science fiction books, especially his collaborations with David Drake- The General Series in particular. Marching through Georgia and the alternate universe with the Domination of the Draka is also interesting.

Finally, Ray Aldridge- he only wrote one series as far as I am aware, the Emancipator- yet that series is perhaps the best I've ever read. Of course Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time is good, but sometimes compact is better.

Wow, on a whim I flipped to the back pages of the Tavern and found some interesting posts, so I'll see if this one can be revived.
Almost my entire book collection (well, entire fiction/fantasy collection) is made up of John Steinbeck and Terry Pratchett.  Both masters whose boots I am not worthy to lick.

An under appreciated author is Jack L. Chalker.
If you like fun fantasy try his River of the Dancing God Books.
All of his Sci-fi books are good, a good place to start is The Four Lords of the Diamond, which is a large novel in four books that starts with "Lilith: A Snake in the Grass"

I have answered...

Some other thread like this but maybe I can do this again...

I liked reading Ernest Hemingway very much there also some other classics I enjoy. Terry Pratchett is always funny to read. There are so many Scifi books I like that can't really name any without taking credit from others...

Wheel of Time is Ok book series compared to many other fantasy books. Maybe best book or most "perfect" I have read is maybe Mika Waltari's (Finnish author) Sinuhe the Egyptian. There was also old hollywood movie made from that book which was of course pure crap.

Forgotten

Some books which are slightly older or not in the bookstores in US anymore are still very good. Libraries or used bookstores are where you need to search. I used to read about 1 or 2 books a day(no TV and about 60 miles from nearest town before I had a car many years ago) and so far no one has mentioned any series or authors I haven't read, but I did see many great books and authors left out.

Lawrence Watt-Evans- funny and entertaining, very good world with lots of room still to explore.

Andre Norton- No one reads witch worlds or all her other books anymore? Fantastic.

L Sprague de Camp- Caliber of Watt-Evans with funny entertaining books.

CH Cherryl- I misspelled her name I think, but she has some very good books out, I don't like all her work, but only author I do like all is Ray Aldridge and probably only because he only has 3 books out.

Katherine Kurtz- Derayni series and also Palace(great sci-fi, but not stocked even though it's in print, and very hard to find mention of, two books in that series so far.)

Ursula le Guin- some good books and some not so good, but her good ones are very good.

Holly Linsel- Promising writer, not many individual books yet, but many productive joint author books.

I have a list somewhere with the names of many more of these authors, I didn't bring it to work with me though... it's often hard to find some of the better books with so much shelf space devoted to a few famous authors and/or series.

Ah, yes...

Feist is my favorite too from Fantasy writers.

Ichon...
I have read so many books that I can't remember the writers and book names but you have some in your list that I possibly found also interested myself aboutt them few years ago.
There are so many good books around and so little time...
I'm kinda break now myself of reading because sometimes I just read too much. Yes, you can read too much. You notice it when you start new book and you start thinking that I hope it would be over allready...so you could start another one...Then it hits you...

Never if it's a good book!

You don't think that if it's a good book though Sha-man. I actually loved WoT series until about the 7th book... I think it's been pointlessly stretched out now, although I am still not sure how it will end. My favorite charater has barely been in the last 3 books also so I'm almost bored of it... but, not quite.

Yes...

That thing usually happens with book series and Wot Is definately one of those. I don't remember what is the book I'm exactly going because I stopped reading them year ago or so. I think one day I will go there to start that series again but not now...
Background of WoT series is very interesting and many characters are OK but the plot...it just sucks. Nothing really happens ever. Kinda sad because it could have been great series...

That's new for me. I'm usualy a bit sorry the story has ended. Have you ever read Amber series from R. Zelanzy. Its a serie I bought a decade ago. I've just finished re-reading it. Its realy worth while.

Of course...

This boring thing doesn't happen all the time. It has happen me few times because I have had about five books to read and then I have started reading and noticed it has sucked it big time. Not the book but the feeling of reading. So then I have taken a break from reading like now and then gone for the same book again. And I believe it will turn out to be good reading experience this time.

I haven't read Amber series...
I sometimes get that sorry feeling too and by far I got most strongest one when I read Sinuhe the Egyptian. Book is pretty long and tells the story of one man. I mean his life story from beginning to end so it was truly sad to finish final page of the book...

what is a book...

....my fellow artist Aerial, a book is an item that has white pages with little black letters on them (something like a .txt or .doc file)... if you are lucky it also has pictures, if not it inspires you to draw some...

Fave books:

1. J.R.R. Tolkien's books (mainly the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy) --a must have for fantasy fans (even Incubus )
2. Paolo Coelio's "The Alchemist" --great book
3. William Gibson's books (mainly the "Neuromancer" trilogy) --cyberpunk at it's best...

note: the selection of my top 3 was a tough job since I've read more books than most people (especialy the younger)care to read...
