Well in the original norse mythology Dark Elves = Dwarves, although they weren't the short stocky 'swing a pick-axe all day' dwarves we've come to associate with the name.

Light undeads or Light Demons
Good luck on trying to come up with those.

When there are so many races who want to recome in heroes, like troglodytes, beholders, lizardmen etc. They made a weak copy of elves!
Agreed, although IMO beholders shouldn't be a race, and lizardmen don't really belong underground.

Why do all the undead creatures have to be conveniently stuffed into a giant undead faction every single time?
I've asked that question myself a few times, but you know, I've hardly ever got a straight answer.

Haven should stay roughly the same (although I'm open to the idea of replacing griffins and/or angels), but there should be other human towns.
Why, why does the main human faction have to be wester-european, why can't it be chinese-ish or something?

I want a Forge town.
Are you talking a generally-industrial type town, or something along the lines of the H3 'Forge' town?

Well apart from the hugely inconvenient morale penalty it would impose if you suddenly had an undead unit in, say, the Haven lineup, there's also that fact that Undead and livings traditionally don't get along that well with each other. Not that many pet ghosts or zombies that I ever heard of.

Yeah well I'd never have thought the smooth-and-suave vampires got along that well with the rest of them, so IMO they should either make a vampire faction, or make the vampires a neutral unit (like death knights).

An industrial steampunkish town would be way, way more out of place in a Might and Magic game than a sci-fi faction.

It's also a gameplay issue. It would be too confusing if the factions wouldn't be notably separated from each other.

I also want the Forge town, would be EPIC!

Why? Steam engines are a lot easier to imagine than missiles, and it's not like steam engine = industry. Besides, what are Golems if not industrially-produced machines?

Well because this is the Might and Magic series, not just some generic reflection of Planet Earth with fantasy monsters; it has established its own identity. What's "easy to imagine" should at least somewhat conform to the examples the previous games have set.

I can point out a hundred instances of sci-fi tech appearing in the games, but the only examples of anything remotely industrial I can recall in the entire franchise are the Tower faction from H3 (which I'd say was more inspired by Myst than anything else) and the latter third of 3DO's bad spinoff game, Shifters. Arguably the Dragon Golems as well, but the lore says they're more magical than technological.

Yeah well Forge was never going to work, it mixed too many technologies, I mean the naga-tank alone mixed modern firearms with futuristic cyborging, you had missiles and flamethrowers alongside lasers... Steam engines, clock-punk and black-powder firearms would (I imagine) be a lot more acceptable than this.

Honestly I wasn't really attempting to provoke you into offensively quoting Stephen Fry, or at least less so than I was trying to point toward the fact that Ubisoft now have somebody who knows the lore of the series - better than anyone else on Earth, probably - in their team.

Of course, returning to the topic of the thread, that may entail that we'll see more established tradition than ever before...

Firstly I wasn't quoting, I was paraphrasing.
Secondly if I'm comming across as offensive then I'm doing something wrong or you're misenterpretating me. Because Stephen Fry and offensive are incompatable.
Thirdly might I ask who this team-member of Ubisoft would be?

On topic. What I hate about Heroes is the fanboyism it provokes, though that is in now way the fault of the game. That is the fault of fans, and not just Heroes fans either. I have a thing against fanboyism alltogether.
What I also hated is that Heroes V drained the fun out of single maps. I know it was buggy, but I absolutely hated the fact that I spent more time waiting on the AI than I was actualy using in my own turn.

Forge was horrible and terribly out of place. It would never have worked in a fantasy universe even if the old M&M lore justified its existence.

I thought the implication was that my refusal to "accept" Ashan as a standalone universe is pigheaded and stubborn. Unless it wasn't directed at me, I don't really see any other way that paraphrasal was to be interpreted. Regardless, sorry.

Anyway, I was talking about Marzhin, who created LotA (set in Axeoth).
Fan activity clearly isn't all that bad when the fan ends up being recruited to develop the game...

It's pretty appropriate though that the Forge crept into this discussion, because it's a perfect example of fans directly destroying/diluting part of the series and affecting it for the worse because of a major misunderstanding about tradition ("no sci-fi in this fantasy universe please!!") - the "fantasy universe" didn't actually exist, as I'm sure many of them were surprised to learn. I try to spout on about the sci-fi fairly often, so that people don't make the mistake of saying "get that technology out of my fantasy game" again.

So I guess you certainly have a point about "fanboyism". All I can say is that HoMM has a very different fanbase now, maybe even a more enlightened one overall (which isn't in the habit of sending death threats to prove a point). Otherwise I suppose Ubi wouldn't have bothered sending me that blurb earlier today.

I think sci-fi can be cool and work in fantasy, but that there is a limit on how strong sci-fi you can have in fantasy. Like in Warcraft you have spaceships. If they looked like spaceship in Star Wars then I would probably have said that they are very out of place etc but they are powered by crystals which automatically makes it okay.

Forge was to me beyond the limit on how much sci-fi you can have in fantasy. You had Naga tanks with shotguns. I can just say wtf to that. xD I can not imagine an industrial sci-fi faction like Forge fighting a Rampart player with elves and unicorns in Heroes 3.
