Yep, that sounds like H5 to me
H3 had neither poor VAs nor poor cutscenes, and yet the textboxes added so much to the immersion. The Sveltana screenshots seem to imply there'll be something similar back in H6, and even if not we can just mod them in anyway

I agree, but what I wanted to say is you cannot call textboxes an innovation over cutscenes. Cutscenes just ARE an innovation over textboxes.

Hard to choose just one:

1. No unit upgrades
Upgrades make some more variety for units, making them quite different, so I prefer to have upgrades, although they are not direly needed

2. Heroes on battlefield
It means that heroes would also die quicker. It's especially annoying, if the armies grow very strong, which means the hero durability significantly decreases. In conclusion, this is not Age of wonders and such system doesn't belong to homm current army system imo.

3. Infernepolis
It isn't that bad as it seems for me. H4 is heavily based on MTG, which has both demons and undead under black color.

4. Abandoning Heroes 3 universe and characters
Annoying. It creates brand new story for each sequel, making them seem unconnected and different game.

5. Reducing number of factions
I prefer more factions, because there is bigger chance I would like more races to play, so I won't have to stick to one most of the time. Although more difficult to balance, it's less fun.

6. No seperate Might and Magic
Still is this better than having all heroes of the same type generic, without specialization. But is nicer to have more types, so more strategies are viable.

7. Cutscenes rather than dialogue boxes when playing campaigns
I would like to have both. Cutscenes at the start and end of the map, for minor events boxes are enough. The game engine evolved, so cinematics is obvious next step.

8. Taking Heroes OFF battlefiend
Look at 2.

9. Reducing number of resources
More resources means more uniqueness of the factions, which depends more on certain resources than the others. I think these 7 are optimal, no more, no less

10. Abandoning initiative system
I like the initiative system, because it didn't overpower the fast units, although it seems that still fast units had better initiative, so little change was observed. However, the haste/slow spells should affect speed, not initiative.

Taking heroes OFF the battlefield. It was one of my fav things in HOMM4.

The faction removal thing didn't matter to me in 4 & 5 but it might matter in 6 if the elves or the wizards are taken out, then I'd vote for that one.

I guess stuff like "turning Dungeon into a Dark Elf town", "allowing creatures to wander without heroes" and "the control point system" would also get some reactions in a poll like this, although it has to be said we can't really judge any of the HOMM6 innovations just yet.

Voted for reducing the number of resources. Also, H4 didn't completely abandon the H3 universe, we still got like 44 heroes returning, not including the famous 4.

Not at all. Prioritizing between upgrading or building new structures is a huge strategic element in the game.

No upgrades was the worst thing for me, totally took out an entire strategic part of the game. Only advantage was that it made it slightly easier to pick up neutrals with diplomacy/charm.

Infernopo... can't finish it. It was an abomination. Really.

Getting heroes into/out of battle was a fun element either way, I liked both ways of playing. Even though it forced you to take Combat to survive.

The H3 characters weren't abandoned (Solmyr played a major part in the Order campaign) but I get what you mean.

H4 certainly was the red-headed step child of the series. There were some amazing and retarded things that came out of it. What I adored about H4 was how you had to choose between one creature or another for a tier, so that you are sculpting your line up. Very cool. I'd love to see that in combination with the alternative upgrades of H5. The problem with them in H5 is that they weren't added until the 2nd expansion, and you could tell the staff was being lazy and overly frugal because the testing was somewhat lacking.

Which leads me to the topic at hand: my least favorite developmental change was how they did away with choosing your tiers in H5, however I'm not holding my breath to see that come back. In this "have it all" global society a lot of people don't like having to pick and choose, but I think it's fun because of the customization of it.

Voted reducing number of factions, though Infernopolis and no upgrades were bad decisions too.

Voted infernopolis (ofc), but there were a lot of possible candidates for me to vote, as in no upgrades, reducing the number of factions and the number of resources..etc.

no might and magic classes. like you can't lead an alchemist anymore in H5 and pwn with titans for example.

no upgrades could be bad, but in H4 was compensated by the choice of creatures. in H3, some upgrades were not so impressive

i never realized people hated infernopolis. I think i'm in the minority when i say i liked it.

THAT'S RIGHT. I LIKED IT.

and cutscenes... When they are horribly bangled like in HV they suck badly. I liked the cutscenes in games like WC3 and AoM because of their simplicity.

Necropolis seems to be commandingly the most popular faction throughout Heroes, so it was bound to anger all those undead fanboys.

It only bothered me mildly, and that was just because you were still forced to have both skeletons and imps as the low tier creatures. If you could have shaped your creature line-up so that you had either exclusively undead or exclusively demons, then I wouldn't have minded it.

I'm sure you're aware you made it pretty difficult to choose just one, alc.

# 1.No unit upgrades was definitely a setback, but one that could've been compensated by a high number of factions. The sad fact is, however, that neither did the compensation show up.
# 2.Heroes on battlefield didn't strike me as great, either. It was a good idea, but it should've been handled differently in order to be succesful, in my book. Otherwise, I preffer the alternative.
# 3.Infernopolis was just plain off game. Seriously, I can't find one reason to have paired them up like that. I get it they're both on the evil side, but since when is that a reason to team up factions like that? They have totally different playing styles. I'm all against this decision.
# 4.Abandoning Heroes 3 universe and characters wasn't to my liking either. I do miss them both.
# 5.No separate Might and Magic heroes is again one thing I'm all against. It is called Heroes of Might & Magic, after all. That alone should be reason enough to focus on might & magic classes, individually.
# 6.Cutscenes rather than dialogue boxes when playing campaigns - while I do preffer the latter, it's not really a change I couldn't live with.
# 7.Taking heroes off battlefield - # 2 says it all.
# 8.Reducing number of resources. While I don't think this was really necessary, I'm not pronouncing myself just yet. It might actually turn up well.
# 9.Abandoning initiative system. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I did somewhat dislike it, actually. Either way, it's not an important element, in my book.

Finally, the one option my vote goes to is reducing number of factions. I mean, come on... Who wants that? Yes, I do agree that quality is more important than numbers, but given both choices, I'm quite sure there's not one player that would say no to adding a new faction to the game, yet instead of doing that, they actually cut off a few. This is really something I can't understand. It's like they're knowingly doing the obvious wrong.

The most popular games have a couple of very different factions and the players are able to have clear favorites and not just based on the looks of the faction. HOMM3 had a lot of factions but it included a lot of fillers creatures without any special abilities.

There games like Age of Wonders that have 12 factions, but who cares whether you're playing with Dark Elves or Goblins when the only difference is the final unit and the names? The trends in strategy games are clearly about having the less is more approach in this aspect.

About Necropolis in HOMM4 I also liked it and thought it was the best possible thing that could happened to both factions without them being a complete rehash (which occurred in H5). There's another thread about tradition and I do agree this is one of the examples, a lot of people think it's written down in the law that the undead creatures have to be separated and can't be mixed with other evil creatures. Generally I'm not a fan of undead factions because they are the most limited and cliche fantasy faction, they almost never go further than being "dead versions of something already existing".

I don't understand why you feel the need to compare Heroes with other games here. This topic is about the Heroes game history and its successes and downfalls, not about all game history and its general successes and downfalls. As I did mention, I do agree quality comes in first, but it's a fact you can't deny that pretty much everyone also expects a wide variety from Heroes.

I'm aware poll may turn out a bit random because we can only place one vote. Maybe someday we should make a "rank these in order of least preference" game to get an actual scoring board, but I didn't think of that before starting.
