if they are going to be available from day 1, why not just include them in the game? are they going to be last-minute-made maps?

Mean you'd rather get 10 maps? Also I can say for sure that BH crew have been working their @ss off and continue improving what they can, to call them lazy would be inappropriate. Not like they are the ones calling the shots either.

The game will go gold about one month before the game release which means that the game will be sold in the exact same state it was at the moment the game went gold.

This also means (imo) that after the game went gold, they can allocate more people to mapmaking during this period. I don't expect them to release 100 maps, but they can surely make us 10 additional maps that would be available through downloads or even through a patch.

Would you rather have them allocating people to mapmaking NOW instead of them working on the game itself ? Do you want another Heroes 4 with 25+ maps at release but almost unplayable (talking about its release state) ?

The game will probably have gone gold by the time they're completed, so they can't be included on the retail disc. I suspect they'll be added "for real" in patches.
I agree it is a pretty low count. Still, there is a very clear commitment from the map designers to creating more and more of them. I don't think they'll just stop coming a month after release.

Excuse me, but that absolutely SUCKS! Till when are the Heroes developers going to rush every next game with less and less maps that we can play through in a week? We PAY to get enough maps, not to again witness their laziness! I am absolutely sure that they will cease to update the maps after a month or so after the game's release!

Sorry, but I disagree with you

They offer us a game with at least 30 to 50 hours of solo game - which is A LOT more than what most current games are offering us for the same price.

Since Heroes 3, the replayability of HoMM was rarely dependant on the maps Ubisoft or NWC created but mostly on fan-made maps. H5 is an exception but mostly because the map editor was released late AND wasn't user-friendly, but for example, the french H3 and H4 leagues are working with very few official maps that were released with the game or any add-ons.

The success of H6's replayability will depend on the quality of its mapeditor, not on the number of official maps that get shipped with the game.

Content patches are my favorite kind!

Besides, presuming they will allocate some staff to making some additional maps, most players will still take the time to play the old ones and the campaign.
So that means, in between the game going gold and being purchased there will be time to develop a few maps, mappers will have the editor to throw in some fan creations and then in the time it takes the majority of the community to play through the release content of the game (which should still occupy people for a few weeks) both they and the mappers have time to add more.

Remember people, 10 maps isn't a lot, I agree, but it would be a lot worse if HoMM was a fast paced game, it takes usually a few hours or more to finish a single game, unlike say an RTS, where a single game lasts only a few minutes to maybe an hour if it's a tough one.

Edit: And Nelgrith has a point, why do people still play Warcraft III? (besides the addicting ladder play) it's ludicrously powerful map editor and a very creative fanbase.

I'll second Elvin's comments regarding the neutral units.  They are indeed stunning.  I'll admit I was hoping for MORE...but then again, I always want more.  )

The initial 10 MP maps had me a bit concerned at first, but well before anybody finishes those maps we'll have LOTS more.  So I'm sure it won't be a concern at all.

If we get a RMG that is passably functional, I'm not likely to play premade maps ever, so this really is not a big concern in my eyes.

If there is a functional RMG very few people will play pre-made maps outside certain tournaments, but the probability to get a RMG with the initial release is almost non-existent (where "almost" is inserted just because nothing on this world is 100% certain). And from these 10 maps several will be S, several M and maybe just one L and even less likely one XL (and I personally prefer to play on L and XL maps). I just hope that the campaign will be long and interesting enough to keep me (and not only me) occupied until at least 10 more maps appear on-line.

What I meant is if they already have more maps before the time of the release, I hope they include them in the release, instead of making people download them. What worries me is this "We are going to have 10 maps at release. Period.", if it's more like "We are aiming for 10 maps, maybe more." I'm really not worried. I know there must be things like disc recording and transportation and whatnot, so they will probably get more maps done before the release and even so can't include them (for obvious reasons). But I hope they can make more than 10, and not leave them as the last thing to do, just because they can release more as patches and 'downloadable'.

It's not about laziness, but about time distribution, as they say the campaigns are going to be good and stuff, they will probably use a lot of time there. It's just I'm not really fond of campaigns, but maybe this game change a little my preferences.

Another reason is that they will probably be perfecting those few maps and the campaign ones, these later being most important to be gold, as you say, at the moment of the release. So maybe I can live with that, but if they guarantee us that these are going to be the most awesome 10 multiplayer maps ever, I'm all for 10 maps. Plus more after, of course.

Unless I'm just blind and am skipping over it (won't be the first time) I didn't see Elvin's comment about the Neutral units.

By your comment, are we to assume that we have another H5 on our hands and they are only giving us a miniscule amount again?

Maybe I'd posted it in another thread.
Well.. they are not THAT many but on the bright side bosses can be used in a map so you could consider them neutrals of sorts. The insiders have expressed the wish for more neutrals in the future so this will hopefully be taken care of before too long.

Cool! Hopefully they actually listen this time since numerous pleas for it in H5 fell on deaf ears.

@Cepheus

Would you pass on this idea/comment/dream.

I saw recently a short but valid conversation about the "quality of maps made by the community". Something like; going through many bad maps and wasting time "trying to find a gem". I myself have seen where map rating doesn't seem to work because most folks will not "rate a map". Even then it might not be done well.

I do not have a definite idea, so I'm just trying to come up with something. Do the Developers have some "program etc." that they use to calculate in any fashion...a balanced map?

I have suggested somewhere before; that I think it would be a good idea for the Dev.s to sponsor a map-making-contest but now I am wondering if more could not be done, like helping HC rate and organize maps for ourselves in some fashion? I'm sure money's funny and all that but maybe some thought could go this way? Possibly even a small dollar amt. for a "player or maker" to belong to a really good Map HQ so to speak? If at least 'one person' was on staff there for a while to assist in both this and the RMG quality issues as well, I think it would prove very beneficial in the long run for Company and Community alike. Dream vapor fades away

I don't know about you guys, but i hate making maps for other players!!! And I can't play my own maps !! Who shares the same feeling as i do about this? That' why I was disapointed when they announced that at the release there wont be a random map generator, hopefully they change their mind in a future expansion. Cause at least with a random map generator I can play infinite amount of times instead of downloading maps from others. It's sad, very sad ...

If a human has trouble judging the quality of a map how would a program be efficient at it? Would you be able to trust its findings if there was one?

Like before there will be experienced people to create and rate custom maps. There were many good ones in TOH, I had a number of recommendations in the H5 FAQ.

I agree Elvin but I am interested if the Dev.s have again any tool to assist them? Maybe something statistical like the Team Strengths in Pro Football. Maybe they don't have anything but it just seems they would have some idea what they are doing when it comes to 'balance' in some regards to gameplay. Also, I have read that folks like "their" maps and want lots of them included with the game at release. Basically I'm really talking about a Quality control function.

On a related note, in the past, has there been a map review team at HC? Something like a core of experienced players that post maps that they thought well done? I'm just trying to see if there is a way to improve the situation and I'm not thinking about myself at all, just how to improve this overall.

I don't recall one, maps were usually suggested from player to player during H5. A thread for map suggestions/reviews should help a lot in this regard. Also don't be quick to count your eggs, there may be more than 10 maps with a little luck.

Maybe I'll try the recommended maps bit for H6 and see how it goes. That's good news about the Maps. I'm a mapmaker but I still hold a similar opinion with most that it will take some time to get going with a new Editor and also echo that the RMG IS very important for most folks. So hopefully they'll rock-n-roll with that too Thanks for the feedback Elvin. Oh and for some reason I am seeing a big mysterious chuck of Baklava in a bakery? That was done well.

For me the whole point is the unknown and the randomness, the strategy developing during the course of the game is more challenging if i dont see the map's features and shape. Just click on RMG and play ! I use to spam that in H3 i believe and yielded great adventures and challenging opponents. RMG is a must folks don't kid yurself. They do an offshoot of a RMG say generating the basic shape of the map without the resources just the natural layout, then we can at least speed up the process and all we have to do is put in the blanks (castles, resources) and then they could expand it in an expansion. The best RMG was in H3.
