What? Lady Gaga is hardly "hiding" that she is talented and creative. The creative part can be shown at her clothes, her shows and all her twists to her song (she often changes the lyrics slightly, like she turned Telephone into a really sad song about a guy that died). She does her piano performances all the time.
Lady Gaga is the most talented singer of 2000-2010 in my opinion.

80's music rocks ... well, pops at least. Michael Jackson, Madonna, Phil Collins, Roxette, Elton John, Pet Shop Boys, Prefab Sprout, Depeche Mode, Tina Turner, U2, Whitney Houston, Kate Bush ... man, so many icons date back from those days. I sure love my 80's. <3

That being said, some of my favorite music of all time goes back to the 70's also - classic Genesis for instance, and Pink Floyd also made some good stuff, and of course ABBA. And the 90's also had a lot of quality output, both from these same old bands (Genesis, Floyd, U2 and Depeche Mode all made some of their best stuff in the 90's, even if they were not at their most popular then) and also many of my newer favorite artists dates from this decade (Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, Pulp, R.E.M.) ... so I don't know if I can say any particular decade is better than any other - they are just different.

@JJ:

Of course I'm talking in generalities, but there were very few good songs from the late 70s. That's not to say NO good songs though. I think there are good songs from every era and (goes out on a limb here) from every style of music.

BTW, that link lasted less than a minute using great patience to last that long. Which might seem weird since I was just listening to Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters.....trying to remember how many milligrams of phenobarbital were in inventory. "The Right Stuff" is more to my taste when I'm in a higher energy mode which is rare these days.

Judas Priest, Manowar and Iron Maiden....I won't even listen to it, I won't even give it a chance. There are far too many negative associations which I've already mentioned. Same goes for Metalica, AC/DC, Rush, etc.

Black Sabbath and Deep Purple....I don't call those metal myself, even though some people may call them the fathers of metal. I especially don't call Deep Purple metal, that's just rock. Although it was getting into the transition period and style.

I really liked the Load album of Metallica - I would call that Hard Rock, though.
AC/DC, yeah, for some reason I never got that warm with them. There are a couple of songs and riffs that have something going for them:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrCw8po7JKo

That's simply great, and there can be no discussion about that.
But all in all, AC/DC are too limited in musical variety for my taste.

EDIT:

Hey, Back in Black by AC/DC is another good 80s album. Barely, since it was published in 1980, but still.

The best music is from the 50's. 1750, that's it.

I kinda saw that coming .

About the 80's, I agree with you, Alci, that it rocks . The best (in my opinion) album of Aerosmith was the "Permament Vacation" from
1987 and especially the songs "Rag Doll", "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)" and "Angel". There are also many other great songs from Aerosmith from the 80's.

Binabik, I'd classify Deep Purple as Hard Rock. Black Sabbath I would classify as Hard Rock but bordering very close to Metal. People who do think Deep Purple are Metal are completely wrong.

Trouble is, that Purple and Sabbath came before "Metal" - just as the Stooges came before Punk.
Deep Purple, at their peak, were too good for metal. Led Zeppelin as well.

Mountain
Golden Earring (Vanilla Queen)
T-Rex
Sweet

I have a couple Golden Earring CDs and they are way under-rated. This is poor quality but I like this vid. You can link from there to the higher quality studio version.

I don't think anyone mentioned glam rock which actually spanned a lot of years.

There is also Southern rock and blues rock which haven't really changed much over the years. here

Yeah, Golden Earring...

I stumbled somewhat earlier over them:

I own some records as well. A favorite of mine is the album "Switch" of 1975 with a couple of pretty good songs.

They are still existing and will have 50 years band aniversary next year. They are still regularly touring the Netherlands!

I like that one.

Man, their bass player doesn't like being left in the background, he wants to be right up front.

I wonder if they ever tour the states. They never were very big here. They were basically a one hit wonder here.

I think they were in the States in 2003 for the last time, since there seems to be a live CD/DVD from that event (albeit with a not so great setlist).

For the rest of your names.
Mountain, yeah, I own the Twin Peaks Live album, but I think, they weren't really good.

T.Rex. Of course. I had a Tape Recorder as a boy before I got a record plaayer, and Electric Warrior was one of my first buys, as a tape. Another was Master of Reality by Black Sabbath - both didn't last too long as you can imagine, but I re-bought them as records, of course. Even my mum loves T.Rex - had to burn her the collection CD of my wife - who has the Sweet as well, records (even singles, still) and on CD.

Together with Slade, Gary Glitter and Status Quo (which is a special favorite of my wife) plus a touch Bowie you can compilate nice Glamrock CDs for the car which is what I did two or so years ago. .
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Yesterday, when I made a walk in the evening, I tried to figure out what would be my favorite album of David Bowie - and not for th first time. As always I sort of failed. I always end with Aladdin Sane, but then I have a feeling I'm not doing justice to Scary Monsters, Ziggy Stardust and Station To Station, and at that point I invariably add Low to the list.

So the more interesting task might be this:

Make the ultimate Best of Bowie CD. Allow a maximum of 78 minutes playing time per CD, and find a setlist for 1 CD, Double CD and Triple Box CD.

If you don't like Bowie, other bands or artists (your favorite bands) are of course possible as well.

This may actually be an interesting thread on its own. Maybe on the weekend, if no one else is inclined...

tbh I don't like the music of 80's myself. But I don't like many cult musicans and bands anyway. Things like Led Zeppelin, Guns and Roses and such were never really interesting to me. Dunno why. I also dislike Metallica, Nirvana and such.

My favorites are what may be called "commercial crap" - Within Temptation, Dragonforce, also various game/movie OSTs.

True. But it seems that they can't bore me no matter how repetitive they are.

It's like playing diablo. After killing one monster you know it's going to look like that till the end, yet it's still enjoyable.

Dragonforce is excellent music for when you're driving and crappy music for when you're just wholeheartedly listening to music. It's like trance. Trance is a capital genre for listening to in the car, but I don't ever listen to just to listen to it, unless maybe I have a headache since it seems to help with that.

I turned on a fast-paced trance song that was semi-similar to Dragonforce while my mom was in the car and she claimed it made her heart flutter.

At any rate, simply driving is retro for me. If I'm not being distracted by a million things while simultaneously operating a vehicle with enormous potential for destruction, then what's the point?

Dragon Force is good for when I'm trying to describe my music taste to someone who hasn't listened to anything I like.

"What kind of music do you like?"
"Symphonic metal... Power metal..."
"Huh?"
"Nightwish, Dragonforce, you know."
"Oh right!"

Cuz there isn't a person out there who hasn't been raped by Through the Fire and Flames on Guitar Hero.
