Picked up HoMM3 Complete a couple of days ago and want to DL the highly recommended HD patch, however, the official links seem to be dead. Does anybody happen to have a mirror for the latest version?

When you run the HD mod, make sure you click "No CD/DVD", that way, when you load, you won't be surprised to only find an option to play multiplayer. It took me a while to figure that out yesterday.

Could HD mod incoorperate some more visual/features stuff from Hota?

I would like to play some old maps designed without hota rebalance in mind, but if I start HD mod with the default H3 exe, some features, like hero meeting within town and other non-game-changing things are not active.

So I guess it would be best if all features that are just visuals or comfort and do not change the game in any way, should be added by HD mod, not (only) by hota.

Feature idea if possible:
Allow allied players to switch to a "watch" state, to watch what the ally is currently doing, be it fights or moving heroes. This would make especially non-simultanous games a bit less pain, but of course it would also be great for simultanous games (to watch an epic battle your ally is doing).

Is there a way to permanently disable the "Tournament Rules" question? I find it annoying to always have to answer the same No.

yes, at least in older version that I use, but I forgot which particular option is responsible for it... or maybe never knew if it was added recently

Did anybody realized that The Orb of Fire doesn't work properly in HD Mod? It doesn't increase the dmg done by Armageddon.
Well, after a quick test I found out that there's a bug that writes improper dmg done by Geddon. it deals 50% more with the Orb, but it writes that it dealt the Orbless dmg. I can live with this glitch.

New *optional* formula for skills calculation mostly for more balance (anti pure static skills).
Simple example:

Skills calculation:
I. Hero 1 LVL base skills: 2/2/1/1
II. Hero 20 LVL base skills: 10/10/3/3

Units at battlefield (every round or every battle calculation):
I. Hero LVL 1 & 2 base skills: no change

II. Hero 20 LVL base skills:
creatures attack +x (not +10 like hero above): random(current - base) = random(10-2) = random(8)
creatures defense +y (not +10 like hero above): random(current - base) = random(10-2) = random(8)

hero spell power: no change (more powerful magic skills)
hero knowledge skill: no change

Pros:
- more balance in the game (tactics at battlefield really matter now)
- heroes with 30/30/30/30 will not be sure about winning the game (tactics at battlefield really matter now)

Cons:
- new random calculation system (optional)

Example - who will win this battle with the same units:
Hero 20 (warrior) LVL base skills: 10/10/3/3 or Hero 20 (mage/wizard) LVL base skills: 3/3/10/10 ?

What do you think ?

Balancing random templates

Long story short, I got real issues with random templates. They are extremely unbalanced to the point of game being unplayable. I understand that they can never be perfectly balanced, but enough is enough. Two examples suffice.

Me and my wife played a game yesterday, 2v6 Allies vs AI, XL+U completely random settings. She started as Conflux of all things, I had Stronghold. There were SIX Crypts in her area and a solid amount of other buffs. I had unapproachable Ore Mine and in fact I needed to break through pack of Ogres on D2 to move from my starting town. We could have restarded, but this is not my point. After a few hours we've quit the game, because my slow start, exacerbeted by a total poverty of my starting zone, made me extremely weak and unable to cope with the AIs.

Learning nothing from the affair, we've tried the same setting again, this time choosing Conflux and Stronghold willingly. Same crap again. Her zone has blocked Ore Mine, but she can at least roundabout and reach it from the other side. She has five Crypts in her starting zone and numerous buffs plus about ten Treasure Boxes. There are three Treasure Boxes in my whole starting area, one Marletto Tower, one Mercenary Camp, and a few Corpses, half of them empty. I ragequit on week 2.

My point is: why the game doesn't spawn anything on this terrain? I know that it will never be perfectly balanced, but no matter the template, it's always the same. Green terrain is abundant with stuff, while Rough or Lava are just empty wastelands. Is it so hard to place anything something there, anything? This way there's no point in choosing any other faction than Castle/Rampart/Conflux, because wandering aimlessly through an empty map is annoying and boring.

Are there fixed templates, or is this a problem of H3 themselves, be it original game or HD Mod?

It has nothing to do with HD mod, but I agree with you, I never liked random maps, too random for my taste. Having to restart 100 times just to get something halfway decent is not fun either.

Aleksandr: the only thing HDmod has to do with random map templates is that it adds dropdown menu that allows to choose random map template pack to be used for generation of random map
also "Horn of the Abyss" mod contains editor of random map templates
