Have we got any confirmation that the sphynx-like thing is even in the game? I've seen tons of times there has been concept art that hasn't ended up in the game.

That's a jolly good point actually.  In fact, I don't even recall seeing the concept art for it. I think people just saw the Pyramid style architecture for the Necro city, and thought that Sphinx would be the top tier creature.

Considering the symbol of the Necromancers is the Spider, wouldn't it make more sense if the Champion unit was some sort of arachnid?  I know giant spiders are something of a cliché in fantasy game circles, but has there ever been an Eight Legged Freak in any of the Heroes games to date?  If not, here's a brilliant chance for a unique creature to join the Necromancers' ranks!

Makes more sense than a bloody Sphinx.

No, it was in the artwork picture of Svetlana in combat - look in the artworks thread for the HR artwork, it's in the upper left part. That being said, Miru's point is that just because there is an artwork that has such a creature, it might not make it to the actual final game.

OK, so I took this image of Svetlana and pointed out the two creatures to the left.
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/9554/sveltana.jpg

The upper one - that sphinx-like creature. (Some people didn't notice it, so there you have it.) Also, there isn't a big resolution enough, but it looks to me that the creature has pawswhich tells me it's almost defenetly a sphinx

The lower one -  I have no idea what it is or where did the inspiration came from, but I'd be suprised if this wasn't indeed the new 'tier 7' creature; it defenetly fits the "Avatar of the Spider goddess" theme.

Ahh that explains a lot. I've heard so much about all these creatures but I was one of the ones who never noticed them Anyways, it does surprise me that the spider isn't the ultimate tier. It looks much more necropolis/Asha-like than the flying one, from a distance at least. I would give the top one more of a neutral role, similar to that of the manticore.

On that note, however, I bring up the possibility of it, in fact, being the manticore. Manticores originated from early persian and is seen as being very similar to the egyptian sphinx. Popular pictures show it as having, in original form, the face of a human (hard to see in the aforementioned picture), body and feet of a lion (as mentioned it appears to be so in the picture), winged (typically similar to those of a bat, again as in the picture), and the tail of either a scorpion or dragon (the picture appears to have a bone dragon-type tail). Now it could just be pure chance, but it would seem that, given the knowledge of eastern origin as well as the picture, that the classic manticore, similar to the neutral character in TotE, could be the final creature in the necropolis army.

As a side note, manticore is often translated to mean "man eater", a very fitting name for a necropolis champion.

I assume inspiration was taken from all 3 creatures, Lamassu, Sphinx and  Manticore and I wouldn't be surprised if the unit was named differently from all that, because I really don't think any of them are "good" enough for a final unit.

Don't know if this was mentioned, but will this one and the spider queen actually have the "undead" ability? That would be a first (not counting H4 of course) for an undead lineup not to be completely undead...

Only skeletons and ghosts are mentioned in the pdf.

I though about this as well, but haven't seen any information particularly on that subject. I myself was sceptical about the Spider Queen thing being in the line-up for that very reason, but apparantly this is not an issue for them, so I suppose it will be like Infernepolis, a mix of undead and none-undead living.

But because of that, they had to re-invent the morale system, right? The pdf's did hint morale being different if I recall well.

Also, I guess a not entirely undead lineup might be intended to prove they are from the same roots as the wizard and at the time they are still summoning some spirits like wizards with Rakshasa and are not able to create a full undead army just yet.

I do recall manticores being mentioned in the pdf a while ago.

Where?

Also I'm confident that the spidery ladies are not living. Besides.. If we forget for a moment their 'bleached' appearance, vamps don't look very dead either.

I always looked at Vamps are cursed creatures. I mean there are some parallels between Vampires and creatures like -let's say- Wherewolfs and Driders, and neither is seen as undead, despite being "created" in a similar way. Vampires imo are Sinister, Cursed Human who are neither alive, not dead... but have a certain attraction to the Necropolis because the Living World shuns them, for obvious reasons.

Then again, by that logic, Gorgons could also be part of the Necropolis because Undead are Immune to their Petrifying stare. Maybe the reason for the Sphinx (or Manticore?) being part of Necro should be sought along those lines.

I have a craving for creative outbursts now and then and writing factions for HoMM is an awesome way to do it... I got a bunch of ideas but making factions based on the H5 formula feels old.

Can't wait 'til I know how everything works...

I fully aware of that too. It is just that naga and their native myth is more appropriate in the Hindu culture rather than some Far Eastern Japanese or Chinese Culture based on many artwork and Heroes V's "unofficial" objects.

But, I'll see how the developer create one. It is like "Surprise Me!" applied here.

I am thinking at one thing.
We were told player will choose between male/female and Might/Magic heroes, involving more RPG aspects.

Does this mean will we be able to create new heroes, giving them name and faces?
Or is it just there is a list of male heroes and female heroes of each type?
And how could that apply to solo campaigns, where we traditionally follow one main character (e.g. Sveltana)?
Will we be able to choose the evolution of main heroes from the start, thus ending with different possible Sveltana (still using same example here)?

I am curious about that.

Good questions. My way of reading is that in custom scenarios, you customize the hero yourself, but that might be reading too much into it. Hiring heroes from tavern would require some sort of pre-made heroes, unless it randomly generates one. Such a system could offer a problem about hero specialization - unless you just choose a specialization for your hero from a list.

Campaign heroes would need to be pre-made, however, otherwise it wouldn't make sense.

Events during the H6 timeline (564-566 YSD)

564 YSD. 2nd Eclipse - Rise of the Demon Sovereign Total lunar eclipse. This time the Blind Brothers had predicted it, and the Alliance, helped by the Dragon Knights, is quick to react. Only a small band of demons manage to escape into the world. The names of the Demon Lords, Urgash’s first children, are heard no more. Instead, the name of Mal-Beleth, the new and only Demon Sovereign, appears.

566 YSD. Day of the Tears of Fire – Death of Tuidhana. A massive fire burns down the Elven capital. The High King Arniel dies in the flames with most of his court. Brythigga, the Mother of Trees, sacred to the Elves, is also consumed by the fire, leaving a blackened scar on the earth where nothing would ever grow again. The loss is devastating.
The Dark Elves are blamed and offered exile or death by Arniel's son, Vaniel. Most choose exile; the rest are hunted down and destroyed without mercy. Tuidhana remains with her lands and is killed.
The place where Brythigga had stood was stricken from the maps, and to this day no elf will go there. Another Mother of Trees has been consecrated, hidden deep within the forests, but no Elf will speak of her to outsiders. (HEAVY Campaign vibes!)

Judging by the above events, the fourth (returning) Race would be either the Elves or the Dark Elves. The fifth (debuting) Race could be Faceless (If Dark Elves aren't present) or maybe even the Dragon Knights.

There's no mention of Academy, Dwarves, Orcs AND Naga, and I see no reason why they would be included

I think it's pretty much a given that H6's storyline will be about the Fall of the Demon Lords (and mayyybe the rise of the Sovereign -Expansion?), with a side story about the rise of the Dark-Elves and/or their war with the Normal Elves (which happens only TWO years after the Second Eclypse and could be included.)

Agreed. It wouldn't make much sense if you could decide not play Sveltana, Anastasia or Anton in the campaigns, so I think it will only be a multiplayer or single player map options.

One thing that was lacking in the H5 campaigns was the hero carry-over option (it was possible to create it, but it was only used once in the Findan campaign). With a better use of carry-over, the customization of your hero(es) could be a nice asset to the campaigns.

The main storyline will be about the siblings, so I'm pretty sure there will be events not disclosed in the lore so far. Which means they can easily incorporate the not mentioned factions, even because Necropolis didn't matter much in big Ashan politics at the time but they are part of the storyline for different reasons.

That said, I'd imagine it's easier to incorporate elves or dark elves in the storyline than wizards or dwarves. Plus Erwan did say dragons will be in the game but I can't see them all relegated to neutrals, which means one of the elves are likely to be in.

Academy is a desert faction, so I don't how they would incorporate it without a Sand-type Terrain.

Naga's seem more appropriate, and judging how a Non-Entity like Necropolis was dragged into the game, it's possible they are present.

So far, the CLEAREST indications seem -imho- Elves and Dark Elves, taking Plains (or maybe Jungle/Forest) and Underground respectively.

The Naga imo seem more fitting as an Expansion inclusion. Just my two cents.

What KEEPS enthralling me is this new, fifth faction. WHAT IS IT I WANNA KNOW NAO??? For now, the Dragon Knights (who DO seem like a Factor you couldn't ignore at the time, unlike the Dark-Elves, Academy, Naga and even Necro) seem most feasable if Ubi (and whatever Company designs the game) can differentiate between them and Haven. They could very well be the owners of the "Dragons" that were spoiled to appear. Dragon Riders FTW!

I wouldn't be too quick to assume that, though. Even if Academy has a predominantly desert and Middle Eastern theme in Heroes V, it is entirely plausible that one of the original siblings who went the arcane path did not come from the same place. What if he/she chose to study in the quiet of the underground, but found it disturbing with all the echoes and whatnot, and decided to make his/her way to a quieter location? Remember, Heroes VI takes place 500 years before Heroes V.

And what is it with people trying to correlate a faction based on the environmental themeset listed for Heroes VI? By right (at least, according to Heroes V), Necropolis should've been in a swamp theme area, but instead they're given wasteland which was allocated for the Stronghold (Barbarians) before.

Again, could someone please explain the irrational yearning for a Naga faction that so many people seem to suffer from?

Well,
1. There is a word about the totally new faction here
2. Based on no. 1, many predict that word "original faction" supposed to be something hinted being some race that they planned to be released at ToTE. Their fragment 3D objects are actually found. The detail is here
3. The word original may also means: Shalassa the water dragon which never mentioned in Heroes V (aside Lore)
4. Dexter (supposed to be our insider) posted something in the artwork thread here hinting them as the "unrevealed faction" they could mean anything but there are also nagas there
5. Jungle (probably swampy or tropical) combined with chinese culture and naga from the artwork. There you have your 5th original faction prediction.

@Lexxan: I don't think a Dragon Knight will be a faction, I mean not your normal faction. If you read carefully they are supposed to be some-uber-elite chosen taken from many other races and I think they are consider to be very powerful. Even if they are present I don't think they will come as your normal faction, maybe an uber-campaign-only faction. CMIIW, I think there are 2 known Dragon Knights so far: Arantir (a Necromancer) and Tieru (an Elven Druid). Tieru was hinted when the event Biara killed Tieru in one of the original HV's campaign where Biara said "It is so rare that someone killed a Dragon Knight and don't suffer severe punishment" (Not exactly like that but I think that is the general idea). Also, I heard about Arantir being a Dragon Knight in DM but can't remember in which part of the story. My 2 cents though
