Quote: I'm not sure what point you're trying to make, DarkLord.
It's a Heroes game; they're allowed to draw ideas from the rest of the franchise. And if they saw an idea that they thought could have been executed better, it's their right as game developers to give it a try. Advanced Classes were a good idea in H4, but they weren't implemented well; now it looks like they function a bit more nicely. The Venom Spawn was...interesting...but it was too far from the mark; so they synthesized the idea of a hideous monster-like thing and created the Breeder, which works much better.
The tier system in H4 was that you had to choose one of each tier of creature - which a lot of people hated, for obvious reasons - and so in H6, they decided to bring the tier system back, but change it so that it wouldn't offend so many people. So now we have a tier system that works.
I can see the comparisons you're drawing, DarkLord, but what you're pointing out isn't plagiarism; it's evolution.
my friend...you surely got me wrong
I am delighted that Ubi is inspired by H4 ideas!!! and i am very very very Veeeery Happy that they impliment it even better!!!
i personally Love a lot of things in Heroes4, as well as i don't like some things as well..
But that's the same for every HoMM game.. each HoMM game had it's strong and week points..
so coming back..
the POINT i am trying to make is.. that vast majority of people here Hate everything in Heroes4, just because it's Heroes4..
OR.. love everything in Heroes3 or Heroes6 just in sake of stating Heroes3 is the best, and Heroes6 is New, and New is progress!!!!
i see this as hypocritic!!! why not pointing out Good and Bad sides instead of this narrow vision that Heroes4 was just horrible..
that is all what i am trying to say ...

good enough?
I missed that one, are you implying that heroes could move without creatures in H6 also just like H4? if yes, link info? how does it work?
Just remove the creatures from your army and a hero can move around without creatures But you are limited in actions you can do and if you encounter an enemy, you'll lose the battle instantly.

@DarkLord:
Well, I think that much of the negativity towards H4 stems from the fact that those things weren't implemented properly. Heroes on the battlefield would be fine, except that it was too easy to kill them - there should have been a mechanic in place where, if you killed the hero's entire army, the hero would be forced to retreat. Or heroes should have had more hit points, to withstand an attack from the inevitable end-game colossus.
The tier system would have been okay if they had also retained creature upgrades - but having to choose several of the many units available felt like a cheat, with nothing else in your town to occupy your turns.
The town screens would have been wonderful, if they had used the "terrain-specific" graphics to create truly unique town layouts, instead of templating the terrain over a set layout. It would be more work, but not a lot more work, and so a lot of people felt cheated.
Much like we feel cheated now, when the town screen has been all but removed completely.
So I would say that I agree with the majority, that Heroes 4 was not the best of HoMM games. But I agree with you, DarkLord, that they seem to have taken some of the mistakes and tried to implement them better. The exception being the town window, which is now famously awful in the context of this game.

Anyone who thinks that H4's town screens are just as bad or worse as H6's is delusional.

This post made me shift my thinking about what a town screen should be.
Really, it ought to be a bit like a city made of legos. Presentational, function, and interesting to look at. Also modular - so that when you build a building, it fills a specific space on the screen.
I don't see why they couldn't have created a 3D town screen that had a stationary camera. They could achieve something just as photorealistic as Heroes 5 or 6, without losing any of the utility that we had with previous games.

Because you know many games that didn't take anything from other sources ? Else there wouldn't be any game with elves, dwarves, demons, giants, orcs, magicians, etc...

Quote: Town screens aren't a big deal, you can learn to get use to them, by the time you played H6 a dozen times you won't even notice them.
My sentiments exactly.
What's the most important thing that the Heroes series had more than any other TBS or other genre game for that matter? It's REPLAYABILITY. King's Bounty once finished that was it, Disciplies got boring, Heroes -> Hours and hours of fun and a purchase that is well worth the dollar spent. Okay maybe also Half-Life Counterstrike....as an FPS multiplayer.
Anyway, this is the main discussion thread, there's a Town screen discussion thread too people.....

Honestly, I don't even consider the beta to be playable any more, much less replayable. It's dull and unimmersive. The town screens are part of this. I played for 30 minutes last night and just quit through boredom.
I won't cancel my preorder, I'm holding out some hope that improved balance and multiplayer will make it interesting, but I won't exactly be on the edge of my seat for release.
Might go back to what used to be called Spring RTS: Complete Annihilation and is now called Zero-K in the mean time. Chances are you've never heard of that but it is free and awesome. I mean seriously awesome, it's a free game that blows away any other RTS I've ever come across including big budget titles (well ok SC2 is good too) http://www.zero-k.info/

Duel in Heroes 6?
Apparantly this guy somehow has access to the Duel feature in the beta that we had in H5. Has anyone else been able to try this?

It is in the skirmish mode, but the game crashes when you launch a duel ^^

My Skirmish is constantly grayed out. What opens it up? Is it a bug or do you have to reach some sort of level?
