I think he knows that it rarely happens, if ever.  However, the argument was raised 'if they outnumber you'.  Which I answered also.  Which is the entire point I believe.  How often are a large group of criminals going to get together to rob ONE house.  If there IS a large group, for just one house..chances are they didn't come there to steal anything.

Unless your on an open street a gun is completely useless indoors unless you have a good shot. The great misconception with guns is that if you have a gun you are automatically a threat and can kill anyone whom you please. But in practice, any 14 year old boy that could match you in height and weight could disarm you and use your all powerful gun against you.

And also, due to the natures of most encounters, the best weapons are vigilence, the element of surprise, and any close combat weapon like a bat or knife. I imagine that martial arts would also be a great asset.

Man, i've been studying WAY to much military tactics from video games.

Um, just a suggestion. Don't put that to the test,ok?

And bats, swords, knives, martial arts, etc let them get way too close.

I'm going to add my 2 cents here, mainly because most of the thread is beside the topic.

Gun ownership is legal in the US, so we are talking about a legitimate thing here.

The main thing to keep in mind is:

If you own a gun because you want to protect your home against criminals - you must be prepared to use it! To SHOOT, mind you. Not to point it on someone.

Think about it. What can happen? A gun will be of use only, if you are at home. If you are at home, and a burglary or robbery takes place, the criminals obviously don't care whether someone is in the house or not which spells MASSIVE danger because they are not shying away from a potential personal confrontation.

Which means, the probability that the intruders are armed and ready to make use of violence is high.
Which in turn means, any thoughts about pulling a gun out, sneak downstairs, aim the gun to the intruder(s) and make them go away, is delusional.
Don't EVER try to control a situation with your gun. That would be a gusssing game against ONE opponent already, since you miss the training - however, there may be more than one opponent, and you may not see them all when you actively try to scare them away: you don't know what you are up against!
So you MUST shoot FIRST, especially when there is more than one attacker. That is, you can't bother with the life of the invaders, because aiming a gun onto them means threatening them with jail or death. They may be really mean ones, killers, and you can't know the difference - it's not your task to get to know it. Your home and family is threatened.

That seems to be a risky and bloody business. Maybe another way would be better.

The first thing would be to install something to throw off the more harmless burglars who are looking for an opportunity only. Lights, maybe a noise alarm.

Secondly, a more defensive strategy makes more sense. Don't play the hero - you are missing the necessary training. Take your gun, look for your children, call the police and defend the sleeping quarters with your gun against everyone coming up, by shooting first and talk later, after making sure everyone who HAS a business being in your house is safely behind you.

So: Since you NEVER know what you are up against, bolstering your courage with a gun to protect your material ownings is folly - the criminals are way more experienced, and you don't know whether you can really face them, but doing it with the weapon means upping the ante considerably.
Which means, a weapon, for me, would be a purely defensive weapon.
a) wake up from strange noises and sounds
b) make sure wife is lying beside you
c) take gun and arm it
d) make sure children are all where they are supposed to be
e) call the police
f) defend stairs and and second floor by shooting on everyone not identifying themselves as police and coming upstairs.

It's simply this: you are no expert with a gun, and you have to do everything to make the use easy for you. Using a weapon against person(s) coming upstairs to what can be only the sleeping quarters, IS a lot easier than sneaking downstairs yourself and face an unknown danger. it's clearly a border where you do not defend your TV, but your life.

Well Jolly some of us are required to have training with a gun, even if we never carry or use one.  I had to go to many 'training courses' to be licensed to carry a weapon.  I DON'T carry one, but I can.  However, I will let you know this...

The training is a joke.  Military training with weapons is a joke.  In the Military I was able to get 40/40 targets (moving targets) every time I picked up my weapon.  Unless you grow up in a warzone, most of the people you meet are not trained.  Police and such are some of the exception.  I can use anything from a handgun to a M-16a with almost perfect accuracy..but I am STILL not a professional.  Like somebody who grew up in say .. Somalia.

Edit : What I am trying to say is the person breaking in is probably no better 'trained' then you.  Maybe a little less queasy about firing a weapon, but no better trained.

Half the criminals are people thinking they're tough, actually being real pussies. Most won't attack without knowing they're backed up by buddies or something .. +many of them fight like pussies.

Quality over quantity, as the saying goes.

Mytical, when I say "training" I mean a situation where you actually aim with a gun on a living being. Soldiers fighting in a war have training. Criminals fighting in gang wars have training as well.

Not fighting at all makes you absolutely horrible, though.

Gun or not, if someone broke into your home in broad light when you're awake, he's - as JJ said - obviously aware that you may be there. Since guns are legal in US, he's also perfectly aware you may have a gun.

This means that if he breaks into your home ANYWAY, he's very confident about success. This usually means being outnumbered. In which case you are screwed anyway. Nobody is suicidal enough to break alone into someone's quarters when the owner is at home and is very likely to carry a gun. I think this is pretty clear.

If someone is breaking into your home alone or without weapons, he will most likely do so when you're away (that means your home is observed a long time and a perfect moment is picked). In which case no gun will help. If someone breaks into your home when you're sleeping, a dog and a solid alarm system will nullify all attempts anyway, no need for a gun.

And I don't think they storm your place with 10 thugs holding combat shotguns in America, lol. So, I'm taking a wild guess that there are houses being robbed when people are away or completely oblivious to a potential assault. In both cases, you can't help it.If someone catches you unaware, even if you have the gun nearby, you won't have the time to react. You will be either killed OR taken care of before you can think about taking the gun, unlocking it, aiming and shooting.

As a side note: there were tests conducted by US Police: a person with a gun doesn't have a chance against a person with a knife if the distance is smaller than X (I don't remember exactly, sadly - but it wasn't a tiny number!) meters. And it's about decently skilled Police officer, mind you. Not some random civilian that bought a gun and is caught unaware.

Conclusion: a gun won't change much. Get an alarm system. And a dog, if you don't mind.
