Poll Question:
The music of Heroes6

I've read a lot of information about gameplay features in Heroes 6 but I am curious as I suspect a lot of other people are about the music for MM:H6. I probably don't need to point out that music has always been a cornerstone of the Heroes experience and is directly responsible for the immersiveness of the series. After all we should be able to listen to it for the 3-7hours it take to play a full game without it being distracting or tiresome.

So I want to know which games score people have enjoyed the most, and would like to hear in MM:H6 and most importantly why? Or if you'd rather hear a different style of music from some other genre or game, I'd really like to know.

Personally I liked the ambient tracks of HoMM2&3 and the excellent town themes in HoMM5 (The Academy town theme will always one of my favourite songs in a heores series)

Maybe not best but pretty damn good and very fitting with the campaigns. Those tunes were hard to get out of your head Anyways best I'd say H2-H4, hard to objectively pick one.

I Guess because Gibblets hates H4 and all connected with it.

And I prefer H1/ It has great music, especially in Barbarion town and Warlock town (wich is actually slowed part of Bach's English suite #6)
And great ambient music on the map. In other games it sounds to loud.

H2 had best terrain music but less good castle music. H3 had ok terrain and great castle music so... I say H3 but they are close. H5 felt like it had no music, the little I heard was ugly. H4, I hate all the opera stuff. The castle music was gadd awful. Well I guess that keeps it propotinal to the designs.

Music IS important, though I doubt that many gamers think much on it.
I have enjoyed the music behind HoMM III so much that I made a CD to listen to while I draw. The 'soundscapes' are awesome and spot-on with the only exception of the Stronghold being a little, over the top, I would imagine, for Barbarians

I did play 2 but do not remember the music but I was a lot younger (and rowdier) back then. 3 really caught my attention and I would now think because of Rick Wakeman of Yes. He made some music that was beautiful and <imo> written to capture the essence of his subject. I think we could all agree that; "Essence Capturing' is hit or miss to individual tastes. I have an album of music 'inspired by the Lord of the Rings' but <imo> Bo Hannson was not too successful in the 'capturing' bit, at least to my mind's eye. I guess that is how I would describe my love of 3's music.

I like 5's music but can't say that I can feel the same way as those sweeping soundwaves from 3. The themes from Necro. Heaven and Preserve are all very good and get the job done in my imagination. Maybe its the 'sweeping' (for lack of a better word) that I miss now. That would spell out 'song-duration' to me. Many of 3's themes are nearly at normal song-length approx. 3 minutes. Maybe that is it. "Music that was written with enough 'time' to take you there and hold you for a while in your fantasical head"

HoMM4 I did not play at all. My Son said I would not like the changes from 3 and that was that for me.

Hmm I remember H3 and H5 both having excellent tracks. So I am going to make to compare the town themes, excluding Conflux.

Castle VS Haven
When I thought in my head how the themes sounded in my head, I instantly heard Havens theme in my head but could not remember how Castle sounded like. When I listed to HCs own Shyranis video of the Castle theme on YouTube, I instantly recognized it though and knew the whole song after that.
I think Castles theme fits very good with the humans. It sounds very "imperial" in many ways and I really like the dark part in the song. It is somewhat repetive though, but as are most songs from H3.
Castle: 7/10 - 7 Points goes to H3.
When I think of H5s themes, I think of three songs and Havens is defintly one of these. The theme really fits with the beautiful town and the more zealous humans of H5. It is beautiful and just fits the race in every single way. However, after some time you can get tired of the opera that is always in latin so it loses a point there.
Haven: 9/10 - 9 Points goes to H5.

Inferno VS... Inferno
Inferno has never been a town that I really have played a lot. I think the Demons in general are a boring, one-dimensional race and it was annoying that they were the only evil race in H5 and that they stood in the center all the time and seem to do so a lot in H6 aswell. So tbh, I did not recall any of their themes untill I heard them again.
But now that I heard the H3 Inferno song again I think its actually pretty good! It is not the usual "evil drum" song but it is very original and scary enough for a town of demons and devils. But still, I did not remember this song straight out of my head so that brings it down a bit.
H3 Inferno: 6/10 - Heroes III now has 13 Points
I did not like Inferno in H5 at all. For several gameplay reasons such as they do not have an early shooter, no flyers and a racial which lasted like one turn before it faded away. The town itself looks ugly and clastophobic and the theme is unoriginal and boring. I seriously had no memory at all of how the Inferno theme went. Nope, I did not like this song at all.
H5 Inferno: 2/10 - Heroes V now has 11 Points and H3 has gained the lead!

Rampart VS Sylvan
The elven towns in H3 and H5 are really awesome. They are my favorite towns. The whole art of the Rampart town in H3 is amazing and I like the whole atmosphere of the creatures and everything in it and to me Sylvan with its agility and speed is the most fun faction to play as though they went with a more stereotypical tree-loving elven approach for H5.
For me the Rampart theme is perfection, harmony and excellence. I that it and another theme which I will reveal shortly are by far and without doubt the best themes in the series. I remember as a kid I would sing this song when I sat in the toilet because of the better acoustic. This was the first song I thought up when I saw this thread. It is very original and I grew up with,
Rampart: 10/10 H3 now has 23 points! It is going to be hard for H5 to beat this.
The Sylvan theme is also extremly original and really fits the race. I just want to dance when I hear it and I had almost forgot how good and perfect it was. It is very different from the Rampart song but it is to perfect and excellent.
Sylvan: 10/10 H5 now has 21 points so its pretty much the same resultat as during the last round.

Dungeon VS Dungeon! xD
I think the H3 Dungeon was an excellent town in so many ways unlike the chessy Warhammer ripped-off H5 Dungeon.
The H3 Dungeon was monstrous, horryfing and the theme is probably the best "evil" theme in the game. I love the clicking sound in it and it feels very original and fitting. I remember that when I was younger I would just sit around in the Dungeon town, listen to music and pretend that the Trogdolytes were visiting the Harpy dwellings etc.
H3 Dungeon: 9/10 H3 is continuing grabbign points and they are now up to a score of 32 points!
So I did not like the Dungeon in H5 and even though I played with them like 2 days ago, I still could not remember how their theme went while I could clearly remember H3 Dungeons even though I have not played with them for atleast months. To me, the H5 Dungeon theme is just annoying to my ears. It sounds the same all the time. It sounds boring.
H5 Dungeon: 2/10 Another letdown for H5 which now has 23 points compared to H3s 32.

Tower VS Academy
I have always had mixed feelings about the Wizard towns. In H3, I really liked the snow theme but even though I really liked the Naga Queens, they felt out of place and the Gargoyles seemed more home at the Necropolis faction. In H5, Academy was completly different with instead of snow there was sand and Academy was suddenly filled with colours. But I thought the Artificer racial was clumsy and I defintly did not like the H5 Gargoyles (just scrap them, they are not interesting at all!!!) plus I really hated that the Archmages attacks kept killing half your army. The Rakshasa are however one of the more awesome creatures in H5.
As for their theme songs, I will start with Tower and I admit that first I did not quite recall what it went like but then suddenly I remembered the entire theme. And some parts of it are really sad, fitting for the snowy theme and others are really enchanting and beautiful! The theme fits the Tower in many ways and I enjoy it very much.
Tower: 8/10 Another good round for H3 which now has an even 40 points!
The H5 Academy is an extremly beautiful town, I think it is perhaps the most beautiful together with Sylvan in all of H5
The H5 is also very enchanting beautiful and I consider it one of Heroes 5 3 best songs. Again, very enchanting and fitting to the towns well... enchanting visuals.
Academy: 9/10 Finally H5 beat H3! But with 32 points, it will be exciting to see if H5 will be able to beat H3 in the end.

Necropolis VS Necropolis
Another town which name did not change. Necropolis has been awesome in both H3 and H5 but you gotta admit, H3s Necropolis was actually scary and dark while H5s was more cartoonish.
I remember the campaign mentioning the H3 Necropolis "harvesting" people. Yeah, they are badass. And they were evil. Not like now, where they may be the goodest race around.
So Necropolis theme is excellent to me and I think it is by far the most scary theme and the ending of it is so wonderful! If there was more of that then it would defintly have gotten a 10!
H3 Necropolis: 9/10 And with yet another great point, H3 is up to 49 points and things are looking really good!
In H5, the towns we saw the most of must have been the Necropolises and such, it is no suprise this song will be stuck in my head for a long time! But even though its creepy, it I still very "generically evil" just like the H5 Inferno theme which I already forgot. But it is still a huge improvement over Inferno or Dungeon.
H5 Necropolis: 6/10 Atleast it is not a 2! And with this, H5 goes up to 38 points meaning that H3 is leading with 11 points! Fortess and Strongholds theme must be really good now!

Lizard Fortress VS Dwarven Fortress
I miss Lizard fortress a lot and this one will be extra fun to judge as both are completly, completly different factions that only share a name.
So at first I did not really think of Lizard Fortess a lot but then I remembered that I loved this town and its theme! The song shares the same theme as all the other H3 songs and in the end that gets a bit boring so actually, Fortress gets to pay for that.
Lizard H3 Fortress: 6/10 55 points to H3 so far.
With H5, they took the safe card and made... generic LOTR dwarves as the Fortress town. And honestly, the theme sounds like an Inferno theme. I do not think it fits and I think its boring. I am so sorry to H5, but you're still a great game!
Dwarven H3 Fortress: 2/10 Does not catch up and they are at 40 points now.

Stronghold VS Stronghold (nothing funny here)
I think Stronghold in H5 is the best designed faction in that game it is also incredibly fun to play. But the H3 theme is quite good.
For a Might town, I am surpised they took the very peaceful tunes in the H3 Stronghold theme and I like it a lot! Very daring, original and good! I am very impressed. Also, I realize I contract myself here saying the H5 Fort theme doesnt sound like a Dwarven theme but that its good that the Stronghold theme in H3 does not sound like a Barbaric theme.
H3 Stronghold: 8/10 Heroes of Might and Magic III finishes at an impressing 63 points!
The H5 Stronghold went with a more barbaric and I guess fitting approach to their theme song. I do not like the loud parts in this song, reminds me to much of the awful Fortress and Inferno themes.
H5 Stronghold: 5/10 With this Heroes of Might and Magic V ends up on 45 points!

Winner is: Heroes 3 with 63 points compared to H5s 45 Points. Total points they could get were 80 points so that is impressing.

Top 3 H3
1. Rampart (10)
2. Necropolis (9)
3. Tower (8)

Top 3 H5
1. Sylvan (10)
2. Haven (9)
3. Academy (8)

Top 3 Overall
1. Sylvan & Ramparts (10)
2. Haven & Necropolis(9)
3. Academy & Tower(8)

My apologies to the people who would have voted for HoMM4. I guess that's what happens when I make a thread at midnight 6 hours before work.

I have to say I did enjoy HoMM4s music as well, it took me some time to get used to its operatic style but once my ears adjusted it was a pleasure just to have it on for hours on end.

I think the single best piece of music from HoMM3 would have to be the Evil Theme. It found its way into my normal music rotation on and off for weeks at a time.

But I just had a disturbing thought about the new town screen setup. I wonder if we'll be treated to faction themes now that the full screen town windows are out. Although the devs would have to be, imo, pretty stupid to leave out something as pivotal as that.

So has anyone heard who may be doing the music for Heroes 6?

Man...

I'd forgotten how much I loved the music from the older games.  I used to take the play CD from Heroes 3 and put it in my CD-player so I could listen to the soundtrack while I went to sleep.

...I was such a weird kid.

I definitely liked Heroes 3's music.  That said, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Castle theme from H2.  That was epic.

I want to thank xerox for the detailed review of the heroes music. It was very insightful to read what your reasons are for liking the particular pieces of music. I also forgot what the Castle and the H5 inferno theme sounded like.

I think the HoMM5 Inferno theme was meant to be jarring and highly chaotic, which it was. But for my money the Evil Theme from HoMM3 is the right way to take the devil teams sound. An ominously powerful sound that builds and builds as the hordes continue to mass before advancing.

Great Post Xerox! Loved your analysis

I hope the Dev's will read this thread. Would be nice to have the 'Epic Sweeps' again vs the 'fly-bys' (timewise) If only the team would use 3DO's best 'visions' in every facet of gameplay while enhancing their own triumphs...by listening to the fan-base high-lighting each series strengths. I know that cannot be easy to do. Makes me think of Jackson making the Rings. Instant bullseye.

What to think? Sounds like 'our economic slide' is in full-tilt-boogie. Good grief...can't escape the dollar anywhere these days, not even trying to escape. I just hope the Developers believe/understand that short-stabbing-jingles to save a buck will not cut-it. (ImHo) Hose-up the atmosphere behind the game, you kill the 'Quality of gameplay' and tank sales. I hate to think of, even a remote chance, of this series being in jeopardy in any way. It's the only game for me. More importantly; Faery has to be 'disbelief suspended' JRRT said it better than I ever could.

The devs had better read this thread and hear our discontent at the news of them short changing Paul. I think he did a great job on HoMM5 and on his 2nd time around will only get better IMO. At the very least he should get the same wage as before especially if he's willing to put more time and/or effort into his next go around. Hopefully H6 will get a higher score then HoMM3 next time you do your tally Xerox.

Honestly I'd rather have a great soundtrack and sound effects for a game then shiny and polished GRAFIKS.

I completely agree with you last post Markkur, it is definitely the only game for me as well.

@TheSnidr next time you get a correspondence from Mr. Romero could you please thank him for me for the Academy theme. As soon as the vocals kick in 3/5ths of the way through the track I get chills down my spine.

Hey Gibblets

As I said, that's true for me too. I've tried but can't seem to get fired-up about anything else. I d/load'd the 3rd Age Mod of Total War's Kingdoms and it is really good. They piped a lot in from the movies but very quickly I get bored and that one has been the best, it is just not near as fun. I fear, Devs will one day have everything gone the way of those twitchy-game-play-consoles.

Even what? 11 years later? HoMM3 still has facets that are SoTA in game design and execution. I am so hoping the team will 'review' H3's Map-Editor, and drag alot of those lost features forward with modern enhancements. That game was/is such a class-act! Music, screen artwork, gameplay, Mapping, everything right down the line, well thought out and well done. Here's hoping! I still play it. When I went to Win 7, I wondered, will my old stand-by still work? Yep, popped it in and....Crag Hack!...better be arunnin! Jeddite's comin for ya

Make a great day, Markkur

They probably want him on board as much as we do. Sadly, it's all dependent on how large a budget is available for attribution to the composers. I really hope they will come to an agreement that satisfies everyone.

If you'd read higher up on the thread I said it was an honest mistake and has nothing to do with my feelings on HoMM4.

I can tolerate a little bit of twitchy console game like Halo for 2-3 hours of multiplayer every month. But for my money games like Fallout New Vegas, The Elder Scrolls 5 *crosses fingers* are what I'm looking forward too or even Diablo 3.

It's good to see TheSnidrs' info made it to the front page('')
