Laws can be stupid on a federal level just as easily as they can be stupid on a state level. There are more than a few retarded federal laws here in the States that otherwise could be decided by the individual states, and many states wouldn't have such rules, or they would be different.

If a global federal government, i.e. "Terra", was bringing in legislatures from all across the world, which it would be, you would get a mix of different ideas and you might have some really dumb **** coming into effect. What is your solution? Aristocracy? I trust that even less.

Maybe if you let some things be decided by individual regions it does indeed make the authority look questionable, but authority is questionable, and it should always be evolving and open to reform. This is better served when you have a conglomeration of semi-autonomous regions rather than an all-encompassing central government. It's not a coincidence that political theory started rapidly changing (for the best) once countries started introducing parliaments rather than relying on traditional monarchies. Why is this? Because it's an atmosphere that promotes criticism and new ideas. Sub-governments likewise promote criticism and new ideas. Traditional monarchies have unquestionable authority, and much good it does them. You get stagnation.

And for something questionable, it should not outlaw people and put them to jail if it can't be backed by something absolute.

Rape, for instance. There is no "accidental" rape. There is nothing that can justify it. In such case it's pretty clear you should be punished for it.

Smoking weed, on the other hand... well, you get the idea. It's highly questionable to even ban it, and sentencing you to prison for having it in your pocket is questionable to the point of extreme subjectivity. Something a law should not do, imho.

I come from the American State of Vermont, and my state was once an independent nation. Mind you my state was not conquered rather my state requested to be part of America and America reluctantly agreed.

Sometimes I question the wisdom of this decision because very often we Vermonters have a different ideology than people in other parts of the country. Most Vermonters are turned off by tea party protest, and unlike the rest of the nation we are dead set in creating a semi-socialist economic system to name just a few differences.

Nevertheless even if America was divided in to 50 separate countries Vermont would still be very tightly connected with the rest of America. We trade immensely with the other states, almost all of us have relatives spread throughout the different states, and cultural assimilation has been happening since the country's founding if not earlier.

Having a federal government does little to connect us, its existence is simply an acknowledgement that we are already connected. In this way Vermont did not surrender its sovereignty by becoming part of America, it merely chose to accept the reality that it did not have sovereignty to begin with and was part of something greater.

I do not how I am going to come to terms with the tea party protesters sweeping the nation making it something I absolutely don’t want, making me wonder if I even know the country anymore, but I do know that I cannot run and I must work with the people I am connected with.

Here is some people who disagree with that point
