Signpost Text Problems

The game is mixing up the text on a signpost.  I hate to start a thread about something that could have a simple solution but I can't find much with the limited search feature in this forum.

My wife and I are currently playing the map Avalon in ToTE.  Also during other free time I am making a map of my own.  My map includes signposts, as many do, but when we started playing Avalon the signs in that map show the text of the signs in my map.  Here are the symptoms:

Visit sign -> get text from my map
Visit same sign again -> get text from different signpost in my map
Visit different sign -> get different text from my map

This has me rather baffled.  I've had mods from maps show up while playing other maps but changing the signpost text?

Oh, and yes it's the latest version, on WinXP SP3, all latest drivers, etc.

I hope someone will be able to tell you exactly what is goin on. I'm responding to say I've had bizarre things goin on and I get no responses. The group here is a good one I think, so I assume it is because they have not seen my 'unwanted-events'

I think you hit the nail on the head with ...combining mods. There are known conflicts I'm sure you know but who would know ALL conflicts? I had to seperate out 'mods' and 'my maps' to unique folder names and then un/reinstalled the ME/game  to get back to 'virgin'. Seemed the only way for me. Hopefully you wont have to do that but it worked for me. Now, if I want to play a mod...I'll make it the only one loaded. At least then I will know what changed what.

I've not seen any discussion on this but I suspect it is a bad idea to be map-making and playing radical mod-playing at the same time. That's what I was doing when lots of stuff started acting strange. May have nothing to do with it but 'something happened' and that's my best guess. It's probably overkill on my part and may not be doing a darn thing but nowadays when I work on maps I work on one at a time and do not peek at mods in the same session. As a matter of fact, I made a tiny map with nothing on it to open first (to clear the view and then open the map I'm working on only. I suspect that my old habit of opening many during one session caused my problems. I may be wrong as the day is long but without answers?...I gotta guess. Maybe you'll find out and help me out in the process

Fyi. I played Avalon a while back and don't remember anything odd happening. For what that's worth.

Good luck, from Markkur

Thanks for the reply, I've found some more info that might help others help me.

When I referred to mods I meant maps that actually had the mods in them, like extra battle arenas and such.  As far as I know the maps in my games folder aren't the problem because their data files seem to be in the right folder.

I did some looking in the h5m files with WinRAR and found two similarities between my map at the Avalon 2.2 map.  They both have files in the same spot, here are two examples that contain the signpost text:
maps/multiplayer/message.txt
maps/multiplayer/message1.txt
Because my map has a newer date than Avalon I assume the game is using the files from my map that have the same name and are in the same folder.

The other 10 maps I have in my maps folder have no files in the maps/multiplayer folder.  Just a folder with the name of the map.  I don't know of those maps have any signposts in them but I imagine something is incorrect if the map editor is putting files in the multiplayer folder instead of the map's folder, am I right?

I was working on another map about a year ago with Heroes 5 Vanilla (Not ToTE) and as I was finishing it up the map editor suddenly decided to put the map's data files in odd spots making lots of weird things happen, like I could make changes to the map but some wouldn't show up in the game because the editor was changing the file in the <map name> folder but the game was using the file in the multiplayer folder or something like that.

Any more help/advice would be very appreciated.  Should I try to move the files in my map back into the <map name> folder?  I know that will require some XML editing if I do.

You've more skills than I if you're using WinRAR I've just began to learn about this stuff. I stayed in H3's world forever. I replied because of strange things going on in the M.E. Listen to this bit. I saved my maps before doing the re/install bit and when I drug a map of mine back into the newly installed ME? my map was missing some of my 'latest'work. Even though the map had been in the same state for weeks before the re-start, I load it and it's from a saved--state from weeks before, WitW? I'm not expecting someone to help me with that. Although I think there are some here that may help you. Hope so anyway.

Again, I think you are right because clearly, to me anyway, the Editor itself can be corrupted. Mine crashed a few times, apparently  because of on-line conflicts and then things got strange and remained so...even with defrags. The folder system sux and I've noticed many others agree. Hell. right now, doing the check-map function I get "Hero NONE has no town"?, and not a thing is at the position on the map...up or down and even reversed

Sorry that all I could do was say...I'm with you. We are eating the same salad but with different dressings

Good luck

Resolution

Here's what I got so far:

I edited all the paths I could find in the two .xdb files and moved everything into the map's name folder.

I load the map in Heroes 5 and it works fine.

The files are still in the right place

I load the map in the Map Editor and change something, then save it.

The map editor has recreated "map-tags.xdb" and "MapGoalText.txt" in the Multiplayer folder.

Why is does the map editor think it has to keep creating these files in the wrong folder?  It seems like if a text file is missing when it loads a map it just creates a new one.  Are there references to "map-tags.xdb" and "MapGoalText.txt" that I'm not finding?

Remember me saying in an earlier post that (imo) the Editor can get corrupted? If you have had a crash when using it, I can nearly guarantee that it is. But if you've not then it has to be a mod script...doesn't it?

Since I reinstalled my map-editor the odd stuff has stopped. I only wish I really knew what happens with the game and the editor but one thing I think I do guess right about, is that it is a memory-resident issue. Something 'behind the scenes' in the program is making the change. It pretty much has to be that.

If I were you, I would contact the Moderator of the H5 trouble folders directly with an instant message or a poster that answers a lot a script questions like Vokial who seems a resident Wizard with scripts. It might be a while before your needed 'helper' sees this thread. If I were to make that effort and still not solve what is happening, then I would save maps etc. in a new odd-named folder somewhere and uninstall/reinstall to get the Editor back to what should be a virgin state. If you do that, copy no mods or even your own maps to it without first testing this problem. My thoughts in type

Good luck
