A trend is a trend you know.... In 4-5 years almost none of those again will continue smoking.... unless they are too addicted
I don't mind this sort of trend as a warning sign on smoking: Something needs to subconsciously stop the trend from becoming too normal, and a demotivation campaign is good for this purpose.

You want my honest opinion? I don't find her sexy at all.  The thought of kissing someone who has just smoked a cigarette is enough to make me gag.

Sorry, but sex appeal is more than just how a person looks.  It's about how a person smells, too, and to be honest, I think smokers smell like ass.  No, that's not right.  They smell like smokers.

There was a time when smoking was the essence of cool.  That time is long gone.

I was surprised when I went to France how everyone smoked.  WHY WOULD YOU DO IT?  Old people I can understand.  They're already addicted.  But young people.

I'm quite glad I never divulged in smoking, because I would probably have an unusually difficult time quitting. I think cigarette smoke, and especially pipe smoke (though that's very rare), smells very pleasant unless you're around a dozen different people all smoking at once, in which case it can become excessive. Though I agree that smoking is unattractive when it comes to a person's character.

Smoking is only slightly less ridiculous than heavy drinking, and unlike smoking, I think heavy drinking is increasing in America. The fact of the matter is that there are downright superior recreational drugs out there that are rarely used and yet aren't anymore damaging than smoking or heavy drinking. The stimulation of a simple energy drink gives me a much more pleasant sensation than a beer or glass of wine (though the buzz from wine >>> the buzz from beer imo. I swear to Poseidon there's a difference).

I don't know about buzz quality, but wine gives a much worse hangover IMO.  Especially red wine.

Deffinitely. Practically no matter how attractive a person is, if they are smokers, it's a no-go for me.

Just a small peek-in.

The idea that smoking affects children is bullcrap, especially they don't smoke personally, I've been a passive smoker since I was born, and I'm in general a whole lot healthier than most of my classmates, a friend of mine who didn't wake up with smoking parents, can't even walk near a smoker without choking, if she'd had smokers as parents, she wouldn't have had that problem.

What about those electronic cigarettes?

Smoking a pipe IMO is a lot better than smoking a cigarette.

Also, no matter how expensive cigarettes will be, people will still buy them. If not from the stores, then from the smugglers. The latters product quality is very questionable.

I only just noticed this thread and I thought to chuck my two cents into the discussion.

No first of all, note that I am a smoker. I exclusively smoke cigars and I smoke about 3-9 a week. It depends on how often I go out; I like to have a cigar with my beer/whiskey and vice versa. I rarely inhale the smoke, but that's more because it dulls the taste. I started when I was about 18, when at the equivalent of my senoir prom my friend(who isn't a habitual smoker, oddly) offered me a cigar. I took a puff and I enjoyed the taste, I still do enjoy it a lot. And have several times payed over 10 euros for a good cuban cigar and I will do so again given the chance. On avarage I spend about 12 euros a month on cigars, as I have found a relatively cheap brand of which I enjoy the taste.
I have tried cigarettes, before and after I started smoking cigars. But I hate the taste it leaves in my mouth, so I don't do it.
I also take snuff on occasion, but good snuff is difficult to come by and it's hard to carry around for a long time without it going bad.

Now the warning labels don't work. The Dutch-government has tried it several times with increasing warnings and increasingly disgusting images. The problem with such warning is that the shockvalue disappears quickly, if you see it two or three times you're used to it. Also it has the effect that it may start a certain "tradingcard-esque" movement among the kids, who start collecting and trading the pics and warnings.
The best thing I heard about this is that I once heard a stand-up comedian say something along the lines of this:"These warnings are strange, but they might be true. I don't want to stop smoking though, so now I only smoke packets that say that smoking is bad during pregnancy. And I'm a man, so I'm gonna be just fine."

In the US smoking has decreased a lot over the last 30-40 years. I'm not sure of the current numbers but I think it's less than 15% now. Again I'm not sure of the numbers but I think it used to be more than twice that amount.

Smoking is not cool in the US. It's just the opposite. In some places like California you are almost like a leper if you smoke. You are practically shunned by society. Little 5-year-old kids will walk up to adults who are complete strangers and tell them they shouldn't smoke.

In many (most?) sates now you can't smoke in any public buildings including bars. A lot of places you can't even smoke outdoors near the entrance to buildings. I know of one town where it's essentially banned outdoors except on your own property. There are employers who won't hire smokers even if they don't smoke at work (not sure if that's held up in court though). There are apartments and hotels where you can't smoke.

At one time people smoked everywhere. They smoked at the office, in the grocery store, restaurants, hospitals, planes, busses. People smoked in clothing stores so all the brand new clothes would smell like smoke. People would walk though stores and throw the butt on the floor and step on it. They even did that on carpeted floors. Floors of stores had butts everywhere, and burn marks in the carpet.

They smoked on television talk shows. Johnny Carson used to smoke on his show. Dean Martin would be on stage with a martini in one hand and a cig in the other. Even on radio you would hear them flick their lighter to light up.

The anti-smoking campaign has been going on since the 60s. First they banned TV ads. Then the warnings on cig packs and all printed ads. (maybe the warnings came first). Then the ban on airlines. Over time smoking has been banned almost everywhere, but mostly at the state level so it's inconsistent.

Smoking has decreased dramatically and the attitude toward it has also changed. I doubt if there is any way to prove it but I'm sure the anti-smoking campaign and laws are a major part of it. So yes, I'd say it works. It might not be noticeable because it happens slowly over time. Just a person here or there stops smoking, and someone else doesn't start. Eventually over the years the number decreases a lot.

People say it doesn't make a difference. Are you sure? If you take a random group of 100 people and over a five year period just two of those people quit or doesn't start, that's 10% of the population over a 25 year period. From casual observation are you sure you would know if two people quit or don't start in a five year period?
