Beer Experimenting

So last night I was at an Irish pub and as usual I figured I should try some new beer. I went for Foster's and rather liked it - light, not bitter, refined taste. I'm curious, what are your usual choices when it comes to bottled beer or draught? Obviously draught is the clear winner here but humour me anyway.

Btw here's what they had on the menu.

Draught Beer
Guinness, Kilkenny, Tetley 0.5L Pint 5.50 ˝
Fosters, Carlsberg, Maisel Weiss Pint 5.00 ˝
Mythos Pint 4.50 ˝

Bottled Beer
Amstel, Heineken 0.33L
Buckler, Bud, Stella Artois, Amstel lite
Mythos Red 0.33L
Heineken, Amstel 0.5L 4.00
Warsteiner, Pilsner Urquell 0.33L
Corona, Miller 0.33L
Magners Cider 0.568L

Also curious about German beer suggestions, we have a good number of German places around here. I favour paulaner weiss but then I haven't exactly delved deeply into the issue

Let the beer education begin!

guinness draught is great.

Other good beers are hoegarden, carlsberg, stella artois (although it gives a headache).

What I dont usually like is light beers like budweisser. It has almost no bitterness at all. A good beer must have some degree of bitterness. Carlsberg Special Brew is very very bitter and I wouldnt recommend it at all.

I'm not a Guiness fan but I like the rest. Not familiar with hoegarden.

Speaking of bitterness I kinda like kaiser but it wouldn't be amongst my top choices. That said I've only tried the can here.

Hoegarden is a different beer. Its probably wheat beer, not bitter, and quite interesting. But it is not common in my country. I used to try a lot of beers but gave up. I just stick to the more commonly avaliable beers nowadays. But I remember, beer experimenting can be fun.

If i should choose from your menu posted: I'd go for the Fosters too. But there's alot of the mentioned beers i don't know about :S

But where i usually go if i need a quality beer "Fox 'n' Hounds bar"
I always go for B.B. Bohemia Beer Dark - 4,5 % or a Newcastle Brown Ale - 4,7 %

I distinguish three main modes of drinking beer
Light mode - I drink up to 2 bottles
for this mode my choices are:
-Lech Premium- polish beer 0,5L with 5,2% alcohol
-Cooler - Polish beer 0,5L with lemon flavor , arounds 4,5% alcohol
-Carlsberg - danish beer 0,5L can't remember exactly but its about 5% alcohol
-Redd's - Polish beer 0,5L or 0,6L with apple flavor, but you can also take a raspberry flavor or citrus flavor ,4,5% alcohol.
-Tatra Jasne- Polish beer 0,5L with 6% alcohol
Hard mode - I take more than 2 bottles but less than 7
For this mode i generally some of the cheapest in the store but i have some regular choices:
-Dębowe Mocne -Polish beer 0,5L or 0,6L with 7% alcohol
-Okocim Porter - Polish beer 0,5L with 8,3% alcohol
-Pilsener Super Mocne - Polish beer with 9% alcohol but i saw 13% on some bottles
The one mode left is the HARDCORE mode
The list generally any beer mixed with vodka. The only thing i refuse to do in this mode is to dring one polish vodka called "Absolwent", coz it tastes like they conserver metal in it. I take about 7 bottles of beer and vodka or wine or all

Velkopopovich

Then there's this belgian beer that is absolutely magnificent but I can't remember the name right now. It's got a light refined taste, a little sweet even but man it's good!

@Joonasto. You mean Duvel? I love that one.

Hoegaarden is definately kind of unique, so taste it =) A bit on the expensive side compared to say Fosters (but imho in different league too)

Chzech beers:
Chodovar cerne
Bohemia Regent dark
both around 4.4%
Lithuanian beers:
Kalnapilis Original, Grand, Pilsner, Kastonu(Chestnut), Juodasis Gintaras(Black Amber), all up to 5%
Volfas Engelman Rinktinis & Imperial Porter up to 6%

these are my top beers. There are more, but these are my top ones. I usually tend to try new ones when I see them in the store and they are on a reasonable price.

La trappe dubbel it was.

Another excellent one is Innis Gunn Oak Aged Beer. Excellent. It's rather unique but definittely worth the taste.

If you ever come around to Finland and to some place with more small brewery beers I can recommend Joutsen, it's a product from a small brewery restaurant in my home town and it holds it ground rather well in my opinion.

@Disturbed: Bohemia Regent dark is a kind of 'light' porter. It has a light mix of coffee and caramel flavour. Though I haven't seen it in Lithuania's stores for a while now.

I cannot actually argue which is the best beer, but there are just so many good brands I like drinking! Nevertheless, none of them are dark

Carlsberg is the one I drink most commonly, be it locally or internationally.

Other than that, Svyturys Ekstra/Ekstra Draught, a well-known local brand which seems to be served most commonly in bars here, though usually distilled (you can feel something is off).

Heineken is a very good brand, esp in the bottles of 0.33.

I am also in favour of lighter beers, such as Chinese Tsingtao and Japanese Asahi which are rather awesome.

I dont know much about the Czech and German beers (because whenever I am there, I just get what the host recommends us!)...

In Austria, I am ALWAYS drinking Gosser. Bitter, nice aftertaste, VERY GOOD on tap.

Belgium beer is certainly unique and while I dont enjoy some brands such as Trippel, I am in favour of Bosteels Brewery beer, specifically Tripel Karmeliet.

EDIT: La Trappe Dubbel... Tried it, but I do not honestly remember the taste even though that happened a month ago!

I could prolly name a few more of those I have tried that are awesome but having no memory of their names renders me incapable of it.

Svyturys and Utenos beers lost their quality. Extra is being pushed out of the pubs by Kalnapilis Grand and Volfas Engelman(at least here in Kaunas). Out of Svyturys there's only Memelbrau and Baltijos suit my tasteg, although I tend not to touch anything of their brews once I had a rash stomachache after having a few Svyturys Raw.

I think I am the only person on the planet who doesn't really like Hoegaarden, but you should definitely try it. Instead I would go for Allagash White. I seriously believe that Allagash >> Hoegaarden.

Another American one I like is Arrogant snow Ale (replace "snow" with "ba + st + ard" in one word), but it is really hard to find it around. Sticking on the color, Fat Tire is probably my favorite beer recently as my fridge never runs out of it.

Ok, Chimay is a must. Same with Duvel. Anoter must is La Trappe Dubbel.

Also, Pilsner Urquell is a great casual beer.

There is also one Weihenstephaner that I really like, but I don't remember which one is it. Anyway, all of them deserve a try.

Similar is the case with Asahi and Sapporo. If you are in a dilemma the first time, try Sapporo; it is different.

Finally there are some that I prefer for Summer time. I won't bore you with Corona which you probably had several times so far, but instead what about Blue Moon ? For me this is a great summer beer, although they lance "Honey Moon" for the summer (which btw I do not like). Also, girls seem to like it a lot, so this is a good suggestion to a girl with whom you are going out and try together something new. Just don't forget a slice of orange. I think Zythos (in Chalandri) had it last summer and they have a nice yard to sit outside. Even these days, it should be perfect and you can try one of the other ones above.

Corona, brings into mind two other mexican beers, Pacifico and Negra Modelo. Go for Modelo first!

Alright, these for now. I am pretty sure I 've left out several great beers, but, someone else will mention them. Oh, and we need an emoticon that shows an alcoholic drink or a beer!

Oh yeah, McFarland is another one that I like whenever I come back in Greece, although I didn't like it that much in the past. Perhaps I am homesick sometimes.

Happy drinking!

Wow that's some serious homework. Yeah I liked corona and share your sentiments about McFarland. Wasn't impressed at first, maybe I should give it another chance.

Btw Beerpedia is one heck of a site The guy who made it is very passionate about beer.

Also I'd better move this in the tavern, would not want all this knowledge to go wasted

Oh yes, I did not mention this little known dark ale called ABC Extra stout. It tastes a little like black coffee, roasted, not too bitter or sweet. Just what I like. Highly recommended. Bintang, an Indonesian beer is pretty good too. Kilkenny is okay but a bit expensive. Baron's Strong brew is a tad sweet for my liking, but I prefer their marine lager or what it's called. Its light but nice. Avoid Anchor. This is a light, smooth beer but practically tastes like water. No wonder it doesnt cost anything. For thai beers, I would pick singha over chang beer anyday. And I remember this Vietnam beer, 333 or something, that is made from rice! Lol you should try it. Carlsberg gold is really awesome in my unhumble opinion. Generally speaking I dont like ashai.

Remember, the same brand of beer can taste different if its manufactured in other countries.
