Elves and Wizard - let your imagination run wild

I propose a little mind challenge
Lets assume that at some point in future MMH6 will have both sylvan and academy factions. From what I heard, roughly 50% of units are supposed to be new. So the game is this: try to come up with three new units for each faction. Basic rule is this: The unit must be completly new, no such things as cavalry, only this time horse glows. Don't get into technical details, such as hit points. Provide the basic idea, short description, and name for normal and upgraded version. Also, don't forget to write unit's faction (d'oh!) and tier.
I'm waiting for your ideas.

I find it hard to come with COMPLETELY new concepts. not having been in any of the former HoMMs...and O don't suppose the developers will- I suppose "new" units will also be some re-invented older units...or highly changed ones...for example...would a unicorn Knight b new or not? it depends on teh view...

Sylvan seems to be particularly difficult to renew. Even though there are so many nature-oriented units that I could think of, I do think that the hefty amount of units already included over the course of HOMM series renders the task muy dificil.

Academy, if it is included, will need to be completely reinvented or actually changed in concept to fit the times: hence, we would potentially see beastmen along the lines of the mages. As lamassu is included in Necro, it seems like it would be a natural for the manticore to make an appearance among the mages. IN FACT, I would like the Academy to have a more sinister approach to it in spite of its normally positive attitude.

For Sylvan, to replace the War Dancers:

Spirit Bear:
Tough and burly spectral brown bear with luminescent green markings.

Upgrades to

Ancestral Bear:
Much paler coat, markings cover nearly the entire body, has shaggy fur and eyes with glowing green flames.

For Academy to replace the Gargoyle:
(Put a more sinister looking gargoyle back into Dungeon where it started in HoMM1 and HoMM2.)

Cloud Mephit:
A yellow skinned vaguely humanoid impish creature with wings dressed in nothing but a pair of trousers, middle eastern style, with a large spear.
These creatures are beings from the same realm as the djinn and are servants of their society.

Upgrades to

Lightning Mephit:
Lightning crackles around it's body, it's spear is two pronged and glows slightly and it's skin is much darker, with marble like veins of glowing yellow breaking through the skin.

Some unordered suggestions:

* Roc / Thunderbird (has already been in HOMM, may be unfitting for either faction)
* Manticore (has already been in HOMM, would superbly fit Academy)

Conceptually ordered suggestions for Sylvan:

Sylvans potential replacements are Blade Dancers, Druids, Treants and Green Dragons. An elven hunter, a sprite (unless made neutral) and a Unicorn are a natural part of this lineup.

* Falconer (upgrade: Elder Falconer)

A Sylvan creature, mostly based on my former Bastion faction. Visually, it would be a heavily stylicized elf, likely based off indian style. Conceptually, these elves could be a part of Irollan's forest society (correct me if I am wrong lore-wise, have been quite long since I last read up on it) and could as well be an olden form of Blade Dancers (in the sense that falconers are capable of fighting themselves as well as employing falcons to attack). Battle-wise, Falconers would have relatively low damage output and survivability (therefore potentially a core unit).

Potential Abilities:

Falcon's Flight: Using the natural affinity to winds, the falcon dashes at the enemy striking the target without retaliation and returning to the falconer within a certain range off the falconer.
Tandem: When attacked or in close combat, both the falconer and the falcon attack the foe.
Falcon's Protection: Even after the falconer has used up its retaliation, the Falcon performs a retaliatory strike against the attacker, dealing a portion of its normal damage.
Guardian of the Forest: Falconers get a boost of +1 to their movement and morale when battles take place on native terrain.

* Shapeshifter (upgrade: Blightwalker)

Another Sylvan creature, also considerably based on my former Bastion faction. Visually, it would be a similarly stylicized elf as a Falconer, however considerably more nature-oriented (possibly employing various hoodlums (bone necklaces, deer hats, etc.). Conceptually these creatures would potentially be capable of employing the form a woods' creature (beer, wolf, etc.). A potential H6 substitute for Druids. Battle-wise, Shapeshifters would have a huge damage output, high defence, but low hit points. They also could come in either of the two forms: active transformation and passive transformation.

Potential Abilities (Passive Transformation):
Shapeshifting: The Shapeshifter becomes one with nature and transforms into a wolf (upgrade: bear) to move and attack its foes.
Keen Instinct: When sensing danger, the Shapesnower quickly adopts its animal form to suffer less damage from the enemies and to retaliate stronger.
Bear Charge: The Shapeshifter is capable of knocking the opponent back if attacking from at least 2 squares away from the foe, thus receiving no retaliation (note: possibly unless the unit employs a magical or ranged attack).
Determination: The Shapeshifter is immune to morale-dampening/decreasing effects.
Guardian of the Forest: Falconers get a boost of +1 to their movement and morale when battles take place on native terrain.

Potential Abilities (Active Transformation):
Shapeshifting: The Shapeshifter is one with nature and can voluntarily transform into a wolf (upgrade: bear// or an animal of choice). The statistics of the said animal apply instead of the original form (wolf - increased movement, damage and attack, but low defence, hit points; bear - mediocre movement, high damage and defence, mediocre attack).
Guardian of the Forest: Falconers get a boost of +1 to their movement and morale when battles take place on native terrain.
Determination: The Shapeshifter is immune to morale-dampening/decreasing effects.
Canine Instinct: While in Wolf's form, the Shapeshifter has a chance to dodge the enemy attack by moving back or to the side if there are empty squares.
Crushing Maw: Bear's size permits the Shapeshifter to inflict greater damage upon smaller creatures.

Will post more once I think some up.

For sylvan:

All elite, I guess

Twilight Hunter / Night Howler

Wolves whose duty is to protect the balance of its habitat from outside threats. Could have glyphs and tribal features to represent the bond formed with the elves it is allied with.           Probably evasion, stealth.

Wind Seeder / Storm Catcher

A giant anthropomorphic wind (or rather storm, in the upgrade) elemental. The turbulence they generate is so hard that ally and enemy alike have problems standing near them without being carried away.     Possible AoE attack/magic.

Shepherd Stag / Verdant Stag

These stags take care of the forests, helping each seed they can to mature and widen the majesty of its groves. Everything around them grow faster and in balance, and what is damaged gently heals. The upgrade gets vines and leafs entangled in its body, and the tiny vegetation that grows around it is more vibrant.             They have Aura of Regeneration, case wasn't clear enough. Maybe some weak pattern attack instead of just attacking main target.

I could try some of a faction I did just for fun, but most are fairies and gnomes, so they can't be in even in the most optimistic dreams

And yes, I like princess mononoke and okami, so what? xD

Plus they have stags in Clash of Heroes, but I guess it counts as new to Heroes.

For academy:

Maybe core

Servitor / Arcane Keeper

A flying construct ball made of small pyramids circling (actually 'esphering') a runed energy core. Possibly shooter and resistant to magic.

If I think of better and more units to academy I'll edit this one.

Some nice ideas here. Love animated armors and spectral bears especially.

From me:
Giant Spider / Giant Widow
elite sylvan unit, can climb walls during siege, can immobilize with webs, can walk over small units

Storm Couatl / Tempest Couatl
champion sylvan unit, rainbow-colored serpent with wings, can summon tornados and boosts luck of nearby allies

I like several of the ideas!
especially shapeshifter and the enchanted sword.

Some ideas by me:

Academy

Battle Elephant > War Elephant
Elite, maybe even champion.
A heavy, high-hp, good defensed, trained-for-war beast, armored, angry and dangerous. Would trample anything small daring to wlak beneath it's feet (includign your own troops), and stomp and bash enemies into the ground.
Optically, it would be ridden by one warrior, which does not fight in the battle, though.
Elephant is a reasonable option for academy, imo, since the H5 wizard model also rides one.

Spellfighter > Arcane Warrior
Possibly elite. Coudl also be changed to core.
A Fighter-Mage, using the magical energy not for casting spells or producing a long-range attack, but channels it into his own fighting skills and power. Wields a scimitar (upgrade: 2 scimitars), which is enchanted.
The spellfighter ignores (for his weapon) some defensive abilities. For example, it cuts through incorporeal enemies without effort. As well, it ignores spell-shields and such.
The arcane fighter moves on arcane ways rather than naturally, therefore can ignore obstacles and such liek he was a flyer.

Also, following the idea that academy might include beastmen:

Harpy > Scavengress
Core unit, would replace Gargoyle, probably.
Pretty much as we remember it from H3 - the good old flying strike-and-return lady, probably with no retaliation for the upgrade. Some multiple Strike ability seems also possibly reaseonable.
Yet, I know, Harpy wouldn't really be new...

Tigron > Tigron Captain
Basically this also follows the idea of academy with beastmen and this would be an offense- or defense- but surely melee oriented tiger-man-breed.

Sylvan:

Spider > Weaver
Core or Elite
Giant Forest Spiders fighting alongside the Elves.
They are poisonous and the Weavers can set up nets as obstacles and/or traps on the battlefield. Also, the Spiders probably can cross many obstacles.

Also, as I mentioned, I think some returns and7or faction changes coudl be possible - and reasonable, maybe.
Pegasi could return into Sylvan, as well as wolfs could be brought back there...IF there were tigers and academy, I'd see them more there.
I agree, phoenix coudl come back to sylvan. AS well as could fairy dragon, imo.

ARGH, started the post before you had posted yours, bludge...therefore the spiders double -.-

Academy Elit
Hommunculus

The new four-armed creature of the wizards. Think of a savage beast, enslaved, and created trough magical means, maybe even streched together(we know they like to play around with such things).
Brown/yellow/golden colors, huge muscular body, massive arms, obviously large creature, a true meat shield, with swipe attacks, slowing opponents.

Possible new creatures for Sylvan:

Guardian/Keeper (half-stag half-humanoid)
elite creature caster

Centaur/Centaur Charger (return of more nature like centaurs from HoMM3)
core creaute shooter/ upgrade make it much more powerful, but melee

Satyr/Faun (should come up with awesome art, so we will like them )
core creature melee can cast couple of spells / upgrade looks more savage

Prophetess/Oracle (female elf caster)
core creature

Fire Bird/Phoenix
champion creature (fire bird do not ressurect/phoenix obviously do)

Noble Elf/Archont (High elf, art should be very impressive)
elite creature should be much taller then regular elf(hunter) with best royal elven armor and magical sword "kind of elf paladin"

Sure. I think Sylvan will be the 4th faction.

Here you have my suggested line-up.

Core
Sylvan is a faction that isn't that much focused on taking direct damage. They summon the forces of nature to help them and they attack from afar and from the shadows. Sylvans racial skill is Terramorping meaning that they can change how the battlefield looks like.

Hunter

The Hunters of Irollan are the backbone of the elven society both in peace and in war. In times of peace, they are responsible for keeping the animal populations under control and in times of war, their prey becomes their enemies.

Hunters are faster and more agile than any other archer on Ashan. They are so skilled with their Elven bow that they shoot while moving around the battlefield.* A common tactic is to quickly fire off a precise arrow at the enemy while at the same time, run back behind the safety of a lumbering Treant.

(*This is the main mechanic of the Hunter. When its the Hunter's turn, he selects the tile from where he wants to shoot from and then another tile where he wants to move after shooting.)

Harpy

The Harpies are the priestesses of Sylvanna, Elemental Dragon of Earth, who watch over the Mother Tree Brytigga. These avians were once elven women but Sylvanna herself blessed them so that they could reach the highest branches of the tree. Many Harpies have now gone to war to protect Brytigga and with it, Irollan's very soul.

Harpies can cross the battlefield extremly fast and rather than engaging in melee combat directly, they attack and then quickly fly back to their original positions. Harpies can also harness the power of the wind, hastening the actions of her allies.*

(*Harpies retain the old Hit & Run ability but can now also increase the Speed/Iniative of other creatures)

Wildsoul

While Hunters hunt the animals of Irollan, Wildsouls literally become them. Wildsouls are a type of Druids specialized in demishapeshifting. Wildsouls do not completly shift into animals but take the best parts of both the elf's and the beast's body.

Wildsouls can take the spirit of the Eagle to gain wings and move through the battlefield faster, the spirit of the Bear to gain more endurance and strength enough to toss away attackers and the spirit of the Wolf to unleash fury on the enemies and empower the ferocity of his fellow brethren.*

(*The main mechanic of the Wildsoul is to shapeshift to gain parts of three different animals. The Eagle shapeshift increases his speed and allows him to fly but turns off attack. The Bear shapeshift increases his health and defense and allows him to knock back enemies a few tile. The Wolf shapeshift increases damage and attack and allows him to Howl, increasing the damage dealt by nearby allied creatures. Shapeshifting does not take a turn.)

Elite

Treant

Treants are the sons of the Mother Tree Brytigga and they are as such, sacred to the Wood Elves. But even though they are regarded as holy creatures, they will still stand up and defend the forest against all the fiends that would seek to turn it into ash.

Treants are very slow and can root themselves to become immobile. However, while rooted the Treants can use their sharp roots to impale enemies from afar and entangle them. Treants are so large, that most creatures can take cover behind them.*

(*Treants in H6 have a lot of tricks. When they root, they gain a range attack which covers about half the battlefield. They can entangle a single enemy with their ranged attack but several at once with their melee attack. Unrooted or not, other creatures (even a single large creature) can hide behind the Treant because it blocks line of sight meaning that no creature standing behind it can deal or take ranged damage. The main tactic with Hunters is to shoot and then hide behind Treants.)

Nymph

Nymphs are the daugthers of the Mother Tree Brytigga and just as the Treants, they are sacred to the Wood elves but their will to defend Irollan is not something that can be stopped.

Nymphs have dominion over the energies of the Earth and they use this power to aid their allies and agonize their enemies. Even the Wood elves themself fear the ancient magic of the Nymphs.*

(*The Nymph is Sylvans primary spellcaster. Other than casting spells, it can summon 2x2 Crystal which like the Treant, blocks line of sight. If the Crystal it destroyed, it will deal damage to all creatures around it based on its health. It damages both enemies and allies.)

This is not how I imagine the new Unicorn. I want to get away from the white horse with a horn look. The new Unicorn looks more "earthly". It might have brown skin and its horn is a big thorn. It has vines wrapped around its body.

Unicorn

Unicorns are steeds personally blessed by Sylvanna but they are not to be ridden. Unicorns are extremly intelligent and most people attempting to ride them, while end up getting blinded by a flash of light coming out from their thorn and then getting impaled by it.

Unicorns are incredibly fast and incredibly deadly. They will not hesitate to use the mystical power of their horns against the enemies of Sylvanna. It is said that their thorns absorb and reflect magic.*

(*The Unicorn has appeared in all Sylvans and it would be a shame to remove it. This time, the Blind ability is an activated ability because I always thought that it was lame that it was completly random. I also decided to flesh out the old Child of Light ability so now there is a chance for every spell that the enemy casts that it will be absorbed by the horn/thorn. It reflects bad spells back to the enemy and good spells to your own creatures.)

Champion

Gaia

The Gaiae are the very embodiments of nature itself. They exist everywhere, all the time but only when the land itself is threatened they appear and fight.

Gaiae have ultimate and supreme control over nature itself and they can turn deserts to forests in mere minutes. They are one with nature, and nature is one with them.*

(*When Gaiae fly, they actually turn into a swarm of leaves or faeries. The Gaia has more of a supportive role on the battlefield. It has several abilities such as rooting several creatures at once in place, can create healing fields with flowers and storms etc)
