Just gonna say this.
I've never tried Baldurs gate 2.
Only Baldurs gate I've tried is Baldurs gate: Dakr alliance 2.
And when I played it, I was too young to appreciate it's brilliance.

They don't make games like this anymore. Plot and character development have taken the backseat to super-testeroned jerks who have to use big weapons to compensate for their insecurities.

As much as I like BG, I don't agree
Imho, Baldur's Gate 1 plot was horrible. Really boring for like 75% of the game or more. Pretty much the only interesting aspect was "return to candlekeep" and dopplegangers. Sarevok was stereotypical "I'm so evillllllll" guy with a big sword, pretty crappy character if you ask me.
Baldur's Gate 2 was better, but not perfect. The plot and sub-quests had many boring halts (Underwater city bored the **** of me, and the whole Bohdi section was really underwhelming). Character development was cool, but we mustn't forget that the game didn't require much voice acting. Give me half a day and I will write a million non-voiced banters between members. And BG2 had how many, a few per NPC? I really feel the games of old times suffered horribly when it came to character development (of NPCs). Unvoiced dialogue isn't really a problem to add. Now things are way different and we must accept it won't get better, max we can get is a few speeches (see Dragon age) and few banters.
Fortunately, the game itself was good. There was a lot of interesting quests and a lot of powerful equipment to gather. The spells were interesting, albeit most of them was useless and underwhelming. The challenge was non-existent, at least for me, but I never played that game for challenge, so I wasn't really disappointed. And it was long, something I consider fantastic, especially with BGT. I'm a sucker for long games where you can see how your weak char becomes a walking god through an epic journey.
Also, BG2 has many great mods. Imoen Romance will forever remain my favorite, even though it's "under development" or "under revision" for like 6 years now and it even changed the author inbetween that time. Oh well. Maybe I will be able to see the ToB portion of the mod one day.
All in all, a great game and one of my favorite games, but I feel it's somehow over-praised. As for plot, I'd still stick to Deus Ex or Betrayal at Krondor if you want a fantasy-theme rpg for a comparison. Richness of world, detail? Try Ultima series, you will see what a rich world REALLY means, BG, even BGT is simply rushed and empty in comparison to that incredible game. As a package, however, BG still stands well.

Ever thought about "reviewing games" for a living? You just seem to have a natural abilty with analyzing a product. I'm ex QA.
