Secondary Skills you avoid and prefer for your hero?

When playing heroes, whenever you gain enough experience to gain a new level and attain new skill, there are some secondary skills you don't want to learn and secondary skills you want to focus your heroes on. The maximum skillset of a hero is 8!

Castle: Tower
Selected Hero: Solmyr
Starting Primary Skills: 0 attack, 0 defense, 2 power and 3 knowledge
Staring Secondary Skills: Sorcery and Advanced Wisdom
Specialty: Chain Lightning

Preferred Secondary Skillset:

1. Sorcery (default) - Increases SpellCasting Damage
2. Knowledge (default) - Increases Mana/Spell Points
3. Archery - Increases ranged attack damage since tower troops are mostly ranged creature
4. Pathfinding - Reduces Movement penalty on terrains (very effective on swamps)
5. Logistics - Increases land movement
6. Air Bonus - Reduces air spell points cost and increasing spell casting effectiveness
7. Armorer - reduces damage received by troops
8. Leadership - Increases troops moral which is really effective in tower creatures.

Avoiding Secondary Skillset:

1. Eagle Eye - I don't need my hero to learn spells from enemies.
2. Scholar - Kinda odd for solmyr
3. Ballistics - Since most of towers troop is a shooter, I don't need this skill!
4. Fire Magic - Not usefull with wizard heroes
5. Water Magic - Same as fire
6. Navigation - not really that usefull since most maps are land based!

If only in heroes III we can select what secondary skills we want our heroes to attain instead of a random computer generated selections would be a big factor in the Heroes game, It speaks for itself. Developing your perfect hero is really a big aspect of the game. What's yours?

You forgot Earth magic.  By far the most important magic school because of the most important spell in the game.  Town portal.

Yeah but Town Portal is very rare in Tower castle though!

Implosion does rock the house on a battle while armageddon can sometimes be a suicide!

Wrong.

Very, very wrong.

Why do you think I like finding a Tower better than any other town (except Conflux, if I'm closing in on the Grail)? Because they have THREE level 4 spells! I get TP very often in Tower. It's common in Dungeon too, and it pops up occasionally in Necropolis and Rampart. I hardly ever get it in Castle, Inferno, or Conflux (w/o Grail).

my 2 cents

skills i always want: logistic, offense, armorer, tactics

air magic always for this towns: stronghold, fortress, necro, of course air is never wrong with other towns too,
same goes for earth, that i always want with the other 5 towns

water and fire can be killer or rather useless, it really depends on what you get in guilds and what town opponent is, if opponent has stronghold and has a barbarian as main a mass curse is one of the best spells to get since barbs cant get water, if opponent is necro you avoid fire coz they immune to most of it.

wisdom i not always want if i go fully might, can be a mistake to take it too early and getting it to expert when your hack boy has 2 know , pathfind a must on many maps, archery is good with some towns, specially coz of the archery artis that often pop up

skills i never want: sorcery, scouting, eagly eye, mysticism, first aid, learning, ballistics (with a few exceptions maybe)

skills i rate average often, but very good in special cases: resistance, intelligence, artillery (cool with barbarians on many maps)

Can I add DIPLOMACY without chance of being beaten by group of unmorale troops gathered around in some unknown random generated map..

I really never used so much DIPLOMACY.

I tend to buy my army - and can't get well with wandering ones.

also when playing necro - i really don't need them - uck... well except when they are all 1st level creatures that is - like zillion of village people to be slain.

Water Magic:  Just not many spells good for necromancers to learn it

WHAT water magic is SO good 4 necro. its great haveing 1500

skeles and useing teleport and put them right in your

enemeys town. Then next round u clone then and have 3000

skeles ahh u dont know what you are missing out on. But

best thing 2 do is teleport then in there then antimagic

them so no spels hurt umm

"Always" skills
- Logistics
- Earth Magic
- Wisdom
- Ballistics (well, maybe not always, but it's a preferred skill in many cases)

"Never" skills
- Eagle Eye
- Navigation
- Estates (w/ main)
- Learning
- Scouting

Depends on circumstances
- Air Magic (always with any town but Fortress or Stronghold, sometimes even with them)
- Archery (very rarely, but sometimes with Tower)
- Armorer (with Fortress and occasionally Stronghold)
- Artillery (Stronghold only)
- Diplomacy (very rarely)
- Fire Magic (Conflux or Inferno only)
- First Aid (Rampart only)
- Intelligence (almost never with Dungeon, otherwise depends entirely on my whims)
- Leadership (only with might heroes)
- Luck (mostly with Rampart, but occasionally with other might heroes)
- Mysticism (only if I have a very high Knowledge and am expecting TP/D-Door/Fly)
- Necromancy (Necro only, of course)
- Offense (Stronghold and occasionally Fortress)
- Pathfinding (depends entirely on the map's terrain, though it's usually good)
- Resistance (Stronghold and Fortress only)
- Scholar (only if I have a 4th-level special, and then usually with a secondary hero)
- Sorcery (rarely, but sometimes with Dungeon and Tower)
- Tactics (Stronghold, sometimes Fortress)
- Water Magic (always with Castle, Conflux, and Rampart; never with Stronghold, otherwise varies with my whims and other skills)

I think it's irritating when you reach a new level, and gets to decide between 'Basic Learning' and 'Eagle Eye', it can really ruin the entire gaming, and one can't reload in order to get a different experience. Unless a Library is near, it's a drag...

Always:

- Air M
- Earth M
- Wisdom
(Its a must, even for a might hero: tp&4x dim door)

- Logistics
- Armorer
- Offence

Depending on a map&town played & hero:

- Ballistics
( Ive lost so many games only b/c I didnt have it)

- Archery
(Only for Tower+Archery arties, always with Orrin)

- Estates
(Smts I take it even with my main, when Im sure the map is poor, always with the other heroes)

- Fire Magic
(When I see Fire Tome, or when I have good fire spells in a mage guild, and of course with Inferno&Conflux)

- Navigation
(Ususally with 'water scout' or when I know the map and I know that Nav. will help me win)

- Necromancy
(When I play Necro)

- Pathfinding
(depends on a map)

- Resistance
(with Thorgim (I think its the resisitance guy) or when there are resistance artifacts on my side of the map)

- Water M
(best school of magic for might hero)

- Tactics
(I play unlimited turns with my friends so I take it)

- Sorcery
(for a h/r hero)

- Scouting
(only for scouts)

Never:

- Diplomacy
(I play with no joiners so there's no need for Diplo)

- Eagle Eye
(I just want to know who came up with the idea for this skill and WHY!!)

- Mysticism

- Luck
- Leadership
(I use artifacts instead)

- Learning
- Intelligence
- Scholar
- First Aid

On maps that I play Intelligence is not that important.

I just dont take it, and still have tons of spell points.

I keep the +knowledge artifacts and I use them when I need to refuel my mana.

Actually I dont remember the last time I lost because I didnt have this skill and I run out of sp.

It seems that I use my sp mostly for the purpose of traveling: tp/dim door/fly.

Most of the battles are pure might, with one of the players having recanters/orb.

Intelligence is really unnecessary with most heroes, simply because your knowledge gets way up there quickly (I never take Knowledge at Schools of Magic, and I almost always have at least a 15 by game's end). As long as you can find a well (or TP at the end of your turn), you don't need it.

Water Magic only helps Stronghold for two spells (Bless and Teleport). Both are handy, but I never seem to get either with Stronghold, so I don't take Water Magic (that and it's rarely, if ever, offered to Crag Hack).

StormWarning:

I agree, it happens very rarely that you run out of spell points.

It might be a problem in the begening of the game, but as it comes to an end you have plenty of mana.

According to my sources Craig Hack cannot be offered Water Magic. In fact the only way for him to obtain WM is through University or Scholar.

And as for Water Magic.

Mass Bless, Prayer, Clone - huge increase in dmg of your creatures.

And dont forget Mass Cure. Mass Curse/ Mass Slow/ Berserk can be pain in the ass for any town, also for Strondhold.

I still think Water Magic is great for might hero. Its just the way I prefer to play, and it doesnt have to be the best one.

Barbarians can't get Water Magic (not even from Universities). I reckon that only way they can get Water Magic is that map maker gives them it.
Battle Mages can get Water Magic albeit not very often.
