In the situation the AA block the elves i'd rather to rape the AA than blocking the archer.

True, it would be much better to use AA's to ressurect the damage done by the elves than to be obliterated by 1 retaliated attack and then another 2-3 unretaliated.

I have to comment on diplomacy. Am I the only one that has collected a completly lvl7 army off of "join join" as we call it? I think Diplomacy is Crucial on an XL. However, my game play to this point has been strictly in hotseat situations.... Insight on the online play?

In online games its usually a rule to play "no diplo" as it ruins the game and unbalance it.

Skills I prefer over others:
Logistics
Wisdom
Earth Magic
Air Magic
Intelligence
Water Magic
Pathfinding
'Necromancy'(If playing Undead) If not, I go with Sorcery

Skills I prefer not to have oover others:
Navigation
Fire Magic
Archery
Mysticism
First AId
Ballistics
Armor
Offense

Speed is first and foremost. Speed for me also includes DD, Fly and TP. Which calls for the Earth and Air Magics. I like Prayer, so Water Magic is needed. In the beginning Might is right, but towards the end of a map Magic ends all.
The Skills I listed as not preferred are still very good skills to have, and I will get them anyway if it's impossible to get the ones I prefer. I generally pick Heroes with Estate skills as a secondary Hero never the main one.
Everybody has their way, and this is generically what I try to go by.

Town type:Castle(obviously)

Main hero:Mullich if availiable(speed is good)

Skills I consider must-have(for main):
1.)Wisdom(level 3+ spells)
2.)Air Magic(Haste, and some other stuff too)
3.)Earth Magic(Slow, and some other stuff)
4.)Water Magic(Bless, Prayer, and others)
5.)Either a combat bonus skill or Ballistics
6.)Artillery
No 7 or 8 because by that point, I'm prolly out of slots.
Must-haves(scout only):
1.)Estates(never can have too much money)
2.)Scholar(if everyone knows it, don't have to worry bout which hero can teach the spells)
Skills I'll take if I'm not given much choice:
Fire Magic(most of the great damage-dealers are either earth or air, I prefer to either do direct damage or buff my army, not a fan of curses.)
Logistics(movement's good, but not as good as some of the other stuff IMHO)
Luck(high enough bonus can negate the ability of Misfortune, but takes some good [lame pun]luck[/lame pun] to work)
Leadership(See above, sub Sorrow for Misfortune)
Skills that are rather map-specific:
Learning(Works well ONLY when there's a s**tload of xp)
Navigation(water maps only)
Pathfinding(unless you're grass-dirt native stuck in swamps, or similar...not really worth it)
Intelligence/Mysticism(if you lack knowledge, or places to gain spell points, this is required, otherwise, just icing on the cake)
Diplomacy(only works with a lot of wandering stacks)
First Aid(unless you have a tent, you're screwed)
DO NOT TAKE!
Eagle Eye(Pointless unless you're a battle mage going against a wiz, in which case just get spell from the town)
____________
HOMM3 is my favorite game, Castle is my favorite town,
Rion is my favorite hero, Marksman is my favorite unit, Haste is my favorite spell.

BB is a single player, and in single maps armorer/offense are not so good. The purpose of a single map is to create the most unbalanced fights possible so all is played within magic and avoiding physical contact. In MP the game is over after THE fight so you need to hit harder and defend better. In single you have to survive with the less casualties possible, mostly zero, so all is played on clone/resurrect/blind/force field/berserk and so on, thus the need ot intelligence, sorcery etc. Two different worlds. But I will pick armorer/offense if given, anyway. It is always useful.

Hands down, the best hero is:

Castle: Necropolis
Hero: Thant
Primary skill: Necromancery
Secondary Skill: Mysticism
Specialty: Animate Dead

Prefer Skills:
Necromancery (Default)
Mysticism (Default)
Earth Magic
Air Magic
Wisdom
Logistics
Pathfinding
Intelligence

Avoid Skills:
Everything else

What you do is you start steamrolling skeletons right from the start with your necromancery skills. Right before the final strike of a battle, you animate dead on your skeletons, to keep as many as possible. You never upgrade the skeletons, you just leave them as level one. You can easily end up with 1000 skeletons in a month or two. Earth Magic decreases the cost of Animate dead and increases effectiveness, Logistics and Pathfinding make up for Thant's bad movement, Intelligence maxes out his spell points so you can animate dead as much as possible. Intelligence will not make up for increasing your knowledge and spell power attributes, with a huge priority on knowledge at the start. This strategy takes almost no resources, and cannot be beat. 2500 skeletons is practically unbeatable, especially when every time you kill some, Thant brings them all back to life with Animate Dead.

I know it is basically boring to make fun of a single player, but...xD
Your 2k Skellies in month 2 on a Thant with intelligence, mysticism and so on would be raped so badly by a none-newbie playing Crag Hack that your butt would still hurt after a week xD

He is not entirely wrong, however. There must be a reason why necro was banned from every tournament around. But certainly not based on mysticism/intelligence. You need air, offense and tactics as bonus.

Depends on the rule set, hit & run on Necro is kinda easy if he gets no shackles...iam not so scared about Necro, i would more ban it for time reasons than anythign else lol...an opponent making skels every turn zzZZzzzz.
I don't think Castle is much weaker, all those Archangels with the help from more Angels out of Cons, 2 shooters, fast troops in general...the perfect Necro Killers.

That's not even the point. The point is, your skeleton count keeps growing. As you fight lager battles with opponents, the more creatures you kill, the more skeletons you get. The amount of skeletons you have increases logarithmically... until the everyone else is out of units but then you've won anyway. There are ways to beat this strategy and I know that. I just saying that it's something a normal player would have a hard time beating.

Well it isn't news that raising skels is powerful

But i would never ever pick Thant, if you take Isra you will have more Skellies even without Animate Dead at start (the chance to get it later is very high anyway). Thant sucks as main hero, period

Dunno where that thant came from, no disrespect but I'll only  buy him as a scout cause he has a book and he even has a crap spell to start with, (talking randoms). This thread is about secondary skills so lets focus on that.

So you say you avoid offence, armor, tactics, archery well archery doesnt do necro any good so lets take it out. You have mysticism, wisdom, intelligence!!! instead of offence, armor and tactics?

First things first, you play only fixed right? Don't know nothing about fixed so dunno how many skeles you can make by w3, on balance for example, you have 400+ without necro town, just hero with other town. Those 400 skeles won't do nothing vs exp armor with high def, I had this game where opponent had 13+ def as I remember correct, I had 6 att without offence (necro heroes suck) what do you think was the outcome? My sweet bone heads got fried somehow

Ok, lets see now, do you know how much damage those skeles will deal with no offence and freaking low attack on thant? CRAP. Even 400 skeles vs my 3 def killed 3 queens out of 10, had mass shiled though. Have exp with necro heroes and I know what skeles can do IF you have right skills and high stats, your avoided skills are the ones that will win you the game, not the chosen ones

So,offence vs mysticism

How in the right mind? You can regenerate mana several ways on ANY map without that waste of skill, I know its by default but thant sucks anyway.

armor vs wisdom

Hmm, as I said, I never play fixed so I don't know how important wisdom is there but I sure know that it don't hold a candle on randoms compared to armor. It could be very good skill on some temps, still not even close to armor.

tactics vs intelligence

wtf?

Anyway, I just have a problem with those 3 skills over the ones I mentioned and also with thant He sucks but thats only my opinion. Other skills you picked, nice.

1 more thing, forgot necromancy, ofc I won't pick thant so won't have that skill. It's either archery or wisdom, depends on situtaion, map, town etc...

First off, I wish I didn't have to have mysticism. It really is a wasted skill, but do I really have to defend wisdom. without wisdom, you can't learn any spells over level 2. So Town Portal is a no go. With intelligence, you really could sub in offense, but I prefer intelligence b/c expert intelligence doubles your total spell points which is really helpful in long ass battles. I usually end up with 20+ in every attribute category on a normal map so I don't really see the need to augment that with offense or armorer, especially because I resurrect all my units as they are killed. Tactics is useful, and I wish I could have that, but there are just so many slots for skills, I can't have them all.

To Salamandere, I did play a map with Galthran instead of Thant today, and I really enjoyed the bonuses I got to the skeletons in the late game, but it really sucked early on. I went up against a castle player in the third week with about 200 skeles 9 liches and 30 walking dead (hadn't been back to castle in a while). Luckily his main hero was away, but against the castle towers, I lost about 100 skeles. I really wished I had animate dead right about then.

Now, what do you mean by fixed? do you mean I edited (fixed) the map to cheat for myself? No, I don't. what I do is get some units with Thant, and run around for the first few weeks fighting every monster I see, killing them and making more skeletons. The other heroes do that as well, but they have to recruit some monsters from dwellings around me if I can find some.
