is your computer set to run windows update automatically? if so, that could be your problem. some updates create incompatabilities(within the registry, i believe), i've found.

What version of HoMM III Complete do you have? CD version of HoMM 3 Complete utilizes a copy protection (Safedisc 1.50.020) so will not work without CD2 in the CD/DVD drive (or emulator). GoG version requires Administrator privileges to run the game but if You had CD version of the game installed earlier You should uninstall it and clean registry from the traces of the game prior installing GoG version. HD Mod can help You anyway if You don't want inserting CD or clean registry from previous installation.

Mine is CD version of HOMM 3 complete. BTW, what should I do? Will there be an option to keep all your save files if you uninstall them or you have to personally copy them?

Better be safe than sorry and set them apart manually before you uninstall.

You should clean the registry from 3DO and 'New World Computing' entries. But don't do this if You have no experience in this matter. This is dangerous to Your system. Go for HD Mod instead.

Ok I got the mod and the game runs fine now, will I have to worry about the crashes? What does the no CD/DVD mean? Can I download Horn of the Abyss without any problem?

Patching Heroes 3(3DO)
Hello.
I search HC and didn't find a topic with this problem. I was finally able to fix my pc. I my p2 pc the power pack went off and stayed off. I finally got a new power pack and some other used pc parts. I fixed up a P4. I got a copy of windows 7. Fast foward to now(I got everything up to date).
I installed Heroes 3:ROE. I have the patch and tried to run it, but it won't install. It states h3 not installed.
How can I get this to patch from 1.0 to 1.4? Plus, when I installed H3:AB and SOD. I got each patch for those too.
____________
HOMM 3 still rules.

This advice is similar to the advice of cutting off his head in case of a headache.
About H3: RoE patching. First, You need to install H3: RoE outside 'Program Files' folder (C:\HEROES would be fine). It is important. Next, You should copy the patch to the same folder where you installed H3: RoE and rut it from there.

H3 Complete GoG has all patches from H3 ROE, AB and SOD include in bundle, game is patched into 4.0 version. Also this is best version of Heroes 3 Complete released ever. Anyone recommend getting H1-H5 from this site.

H3: RoE is (in many aspects) different game compared to H3 Complete or SoD. H3: RoE is the only Heroes 3 game with high quality (Bink) campaign videos. In H3: RoE there is no crappy trench damage compared to SoD. There are no artifact combinations in RoE. And finally RoE campaigns are broken in H3 Complete.

Thanks Evaline, that worked.
I have 2 harddrives. I was wanting to put all of my games on 1 harddrive separate from my windows 7. The patches however, doesn't recognize the 2nd harddrive. So, I uninstalled it from D: reinstall to c:heroes 3. The patches worked.
I was about to install HOMM WOG. But, I want to play HOMM HOTA. So, I copied Heroes 3 and place a copy under d:. Now I have WOG and HOTA. WOG is C:.
Hurray. I Can't wait to play HOTA, too. Hmmm, do they both run under Windows 7?

What you could also do is make a symbolic link from your C: drive to your D: drive, for instance make "C:/HoMM3" a symbolic link to "D:/Games/NWC/Heroes of Might and Magic 3/Complete" (or wherever you happen to have it installed). That way, all the data is still on your D: drive, while you can also reach the game through the link.
Making symbolic links in Windows isn't as easy as in Linux, but it's possible and doable. Google is your friend to find out the specifics.

I have Windows 7/64 and Heroes III complete. It was working fine for years, but now Windows 7 doesn't recognize the CD any more. The CD drive seems to be fine, and the CD seems to be fine, too - it still works on an older System.
Is there any known (new) Problem with Heroes III and Win 7? Is there a way to play without a CD (from an Image or a no CD Version)?
Edit: Solved it by installing HD. I still want to know why it isn't working any more.

I was updating my HOMM3 HD mod after a hiatus from completing the entire restoration of Erathia campaign and I got this error message.
File_HD3_DataSettings#default#era.ini was downloaded with errors.
Thankfully, I can still play the game(Both the main game and HOTA expansion client) correctly, even the HOTA client was updated correctly.
Any help?

I did. When I installed hota, I set the destination to the same folder as my HOMM3 complete, like how an expansion should be downloaded. Is this the right way?

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that now the update is successful and everything is running smoothly. I did not lose any saved games.
