If unicorns and dragons and angels and all the other overused, clichéd beasts are acceptable then I fail to see the issues with the less well known, but equally worthy like the Kappa, Makara, Qilin and so on. After all, the Naga is Indian and the Thunderbird Amerind.

Still some wispful thinking;
I mean a game like heroes ought to have some semblance of their past glory to maintain their fan base, so in comes the haven the inferno the necropolis... Then they decided that the orcs could have migrated from the jungle to the plains for some flavour...
The rampart in HOMM III brought me into the fandom and slyvan from HOMM V made smitten so its no surprise that I am dying for elves to be featured ...C'mon people, ELVES. (I say ELVES , you say ROCK... ELVES ROCK ELVES ROCK)
So I'm still guessing elves, but perhaps not the wood elves we know of or even the dark elves. Perhaps elves when elves were a big happy family? A bit like 'high' elves with wisps...
OR(but not limited to)
Maybe the naga race, like everyone has been talking about? But not the nagas we're all used to see? A more elfish looking naga, ie beautiful/slender/tall without the snake tail, but maybe some reptilian features like scales, ears and maybe the guys looking more reptilian (sorry Warcraft fans). HOMM has been known for pushing the standard of how the common creature looks, why not NAGAS?
CORE:
Nagarian Spear Wielder --> Becomes ranged unit when upgraded with no melee penalty
ELITE:
'Water Serpent thingy from the teaser' --> got to be floating cause after all majority of the game lies inland
CHAMPION:
Dragon! (cause I don't think the game producers will NOT include a single dragon-like beast in the first 5, cause that's quite dumb...no offence. And I ruled out a giant multi limbed serpent woman cause that's just copying the necropolis)
OR (sorry got lots to say)
Faceless as a elfish race who wears mask, like a masquerade. Maybe their cloaked?
Then in comes the dancer with knife wielding capabilities, think Venice.
I was reading a tread regarding the Coven... though it would suit this idea, with the werewolves and stuff... So I won't dwell into it les I get myself into a lawsuit.

I can think of several ways to make those creatures interesting in a HoMM faction. Just tweak the artwork a bit.
The elephant tiger thingy is pure win. And those dragon thingies would look awesome as sea serpents in a Naga faction.
Just cuz the artwork sucks doesn't mean the idea does.

3rd,4th and 5th pictures aren't that bad.
Well, academy heroes can ride on that elephant-thing, it really suits their theme of crazy Heroes scientists...

Nighty, I understand your Japanese Anime hate attitude but judging far Eastern (specifically Chinese or Japanese) mythology always related to Pokemon or some weird Anime stuff is wrong, totally wrong.
Japanese and Chinese Myth are rich as rich as those of Greek, Roman that most of the western fantasy creatures come from. The presentation of the creature that is decided whether it fit the current setting or not. Hell, even, Rampart have so many Chinese and Japanese influence on its castle screen: Mage Guild is similar to Pagoda and the overall town screen actually reminds me of Chinese Garden (try googling Chinese Garden and look at the picture result, many of the pictures will remind you of Rampart). But why people not call it silly? because the presentation.
As for creatures (try picture-googling it yourself, I am not in a mood right now to attach pictures):
Japanese: Tengu, Kitsune (nine tails), Oni
Chinese: Chinese Phoenix (based on peacock), Chinese Dragon, Qilin, Temple Lion, Lu Bu (I know it is a person, but you can consider him a Myth since he is the strongest general ever existed in Three Kingdom's story/history)
I think expanding the myth in which Heroes game can take creatures or atmospheric feel from is refreshing step, I completely support them, my only concern is most of Chinese and Japanese "Favorite" Myth Creature are fire based, not water based, in which we can "almost" officially certain the new race would be Naga in Chinese/Japanese style. But, again the things that matter is the presentation.

I can imagine the first one using the "wasp swarm" spell...
The elephant-tiger, the seadragonlings and the scaled unicorn-goat were the best.
The living head whith the exposed innards was a little disturbing...

Pagoda style Mage Guild on Rampart (again Chinese Influence architecture on Rampart Town Screen):
Creatures of Chinese Myth:
Chinese Phoenix (Based on Peacock that has fiery long feather tail, sometimes called heaven Bird)
Chinese Dragon (Long Serpent one, yeah you got the idea)
Qilin
Temple Lion (The ones you saw in Temples around Chinese)
as for the rest, do what I said, picture-googling them.

Out of the pictures that NightTerror posted, at least the Qi Lin, the Hebi no Onna and the Chinese Dragons don't deserve such harsh critique.
Especially Hebi no Onna would fit in very well, if Ledroit's designs for those Japanese fashioned Nagas would be kept.
Besides, the Qi Lin has been a member of the official Monster Manual of the 2nd edition as Ki-Rin. And I think it was quite successful. Apparently then the creators of the 3.5 edition, decided to reserve it for the Oriental Adventures supplement for the game.
The Chinese Dragon design is a classic. For example, again in 2nd Edition AD&D, the Mist Dragon and Gold Dragon were based on Chinese Dragon designs.
I bet that if Ledroit's Japanese Naga faction for H5 again were to be used, yes, yet another Dragon would be the Top Tier creature; Chinese this time. Yeah, I know, another dragon, heh... But it would be interesting to have such a dragon in the game.

The qilin is awesome! I really would like to see it in the new faction, if he fit's there ( it will replace our dear nightmare ). The chinese dragon ( at least in my opinion ) will certainly appear in the new faction ( if this faction is an oriental based one ). If the new faction is water-based, I imagine ( if there is one ) the temple lion made by corals or stones covered by corals.

Well, if oriental means Chinese or Japanese then it's not it. Chinese and Japanese women have distinctive makeup and haircuts and in the leaked artwork, none of the featured faces seemed to have such style.
Besides, the devs said so themselves. No Dragons as champions for Heroes VI. Which begs the question, and to return on topic:
Now that is almost 99% certain that the new faction will be a Naga faction, and quite possibly a South Eastern Asian flavored at that; what do you people think is going to be their Champion?

Well, when I say "oriental", I'm talking about other cultures too... We know they may use one eastern background, and this background can be any east myhthology, like : chinese, japanese, indian, korean, indian, cambojan, or indonesian, etc.
About your question :
If it's not a dragon, maybe the old and well known hydra 
And, if it's not the hydra, maybe something like Garuda.

I know many fanboys (and probably some girls to) really adore such things, but I really don't, I rather see some less impossible things and less freaky things, girls with long necks? Yeah right.
If anybody comes up with a cool idea for that woman with her long neck I keep my mouth shut in the future.
Many things in Asian myth are over the top, yes, but so are many things in western myth. These things have since been adapted by modern culture into something more believable, and that can easily happen with something in Asian myth as well.
Unless you just disagree with the cosmetic appearance of the creatures. But that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with it being asian or not, some creatures are just dumb looking.

Yes as much as the Asian stuff, hells yes, and in some cases rather more. Of course that's just my opinion, but there are more people here for the inclusion of certain far-eastern mythical creatures than against.

as for Chinese Serpent Dragon you can call it Leviathan and say "it is not Dragon", judging from Seraph (who actually a higher rank Angel but make the Arch Angel Boss and call Seraph ordinary unit), so yeah I guess it is possible.
@MatIII & Nighty: As far as I concern, we already have Oriental Creature in the past as such as Indian/Hindu Nagas on H3 and probably now on H6. As I said earlier, I don't mind some Asian (Chinese and Japanese) creatures on Heroes as long as the presentation fit the themes well. Even Western Mythology Creature can go bad when the presentation is wrong (Rainbow Mane Unicorn on H4 for example).

They said something about every creature heving tails but not all having feat.
I can only think of nagas and medusas by that.
And there will be only one flyer but he hasn't wings? Maybe a magic serpent.
