Map-making in HoMM (any version)

I know there are templates in the Editors but what exactly are you doing? Sounds like it could be fun.

I has no interest anymore for Homm5.
It may change with Homm6 again

I did a lot in H3. Never even opened H4 and I have to figure a way to get you to try H5<jk>'

Yaahh it sounds like H6 may get you back on board, Hope so anyway. <IMO> If they did the smart thing; mapping is going to be big again in the future.

@Corr

Quote:
I made a boatload of maps for H2, and several for H3.  For the most part they were very well received and I still do get emails about them.

I didn't make any emails for H4 and H5 because I found the editors to be terrible to work with.

What are the H3 titles? H4 don't know, but <imo> H5 is not as bad as it made out to be. But then again I had to get cut-up pretty bad for a while Are you good with scripting?

@All

Post anything to do with mapping (in general) from any version here.

i.e. Ideas that an avid H3 mapper used could still work in other versions. Brainstorming ideas. Balance. Many things are alike in general when it comes to making a good map and I think certain topics from all previous work will be applicable too in H6.

Angelito made templates for Heroes III, as I recall. Don't know if he did any for HV.

Templates referring to Random Map Generator templates.

That's whats got me going Another world to explore while waiting on H6?

Edit =

@ ALL

Since we have a "Story-Line" and a history to follow (and H6 to come), this of course can be good inspiration for making a map or maybe even more importantly a Campaign. So I have a couple of questions;

Is there an article, post or thread that clearly outlines how each release of HoMM, follows the overall tale?

I would not thought about doing this in my H3 days. Is it possible with H2 H3 etc.?

The Entire World? Looks really cool.

Can anyone tell me if this does relect all factions/stories etc.?

Moved this post here I thought I was replying in this thread but Vlaad pointed out that was not so <LOL>

the map editor in H5 seems really aweful indeed. the one in H4 was at least good for creating events from what I remember.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know H4 at all, although I've seen some that like both the game and the editor. I think I remember a poster saying they approached H4 like it was a stand-alone and independent of the rest.
That made enough sense to me to plan on getting it and give it ago (you can still get H3 and H4 (bundled). Looking at that way, I've spent far more money on really bad games taht I doubt H4 would come anywhere near as bad. Expectation's everthing right?

wasn't the best editor the one from shadow of death? unless it was wake of god?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That would get my vote (WoG too)and I think most other folks as well. But, <IMO> H5 has got a far worse rep than what it deserves. But even saying that and enjoying working with the M.E.in H5 (for the most part)it was a clear step down from H3. Just forgeting 'one little thing' like"Events" was a huge mistake.

With as much as has been said here at HC, I believe that H6 is going to set things straight again and give us a blend of the 2 best...and then some. We need to have a little icon of crossed-fingers

Shadow of Death editor was good.

My maps are still available at Celestial Heavens; author is Jolly Joker, you can search by author there.
The allied map version of Race to Power is missing, though, while Dawn of the (Walking) Dead is a single player map.

Anyway, I did and do play H 5, but made no maps for it and won't either. With H6 being at the gates, I don't think it's necessary either.

I made about 24 H2 maps.  I can't remember the titles of all of them, but some of the better ones no doubt include:

Nosferatu
Last Hope Campaign
Agent of Heaven Campaign
The Cabal

H3 maps I made much less, but they were also much more complex in terms of design and story.

These include:
Goldheart
Sander's Folly (definitely the one I get the most email about)
Traemask the Fool (Parts 1 and 2)

Also an incomplete remake of the Last Hope Campaign for WoG in collaboration with Timothy Pulver.
Last Hope
THUNK
Adjudication
Toran Rift

I'm sure you can find them all on Celestial Heavens or at the archives.

As I write in this article, that map counts for nothing since it was developed specifically for a project that never saw the light of day (almost certainly the unannounced Kingdoms of Might and Magic). The only official map of Ashan so far is this one, and those based on it.

Guess I should have read before. I went to the links and found many did the same. It's too bad the map looks really good.

Thanks for the correct link.  So there's no 'One-map' that covers the whole series from H1 to the present? I.E towns from H3 located on the map etc.

@ JJ and Corribus

Thanks. I am getting ready to go back to H3 for a change-up, so it will be fun having some maps to play from you guys. Sometime after the first of the year, if you're ears start burning...don't think anything of it.

Btw, If H6 gets the ME right are you going to create again?

There's not, no. Each game moves between different continents and/or worlds, so it would have to be a trans-galactic starmap to work properly

I've made maps for H3 SoD and RoE, around 10-20 I'd quess with 5 actually good ones and the rest more or less try outs.

Mostly 4 player ones with fixed castles since we used to play a lot with my brother and our two friends. There were 3 pretty good ones too. You could be sure if the maps weren't good they'd never be played again or god's forsake if they weren't balanced. I liked to play around with "changing the rules" a lot. Like disabling upgrades from level 7, making level 3 the power stack or something else just to shake things up a bit so you had to think of something different.

One multiplayer one with random castles that actually turned out decent, all the rest I tried to make had issues with balance. The damn resource usage is so different it can totally revert some castle to stone age while propelling some other to kingdoms of heaven.

Mutare's vacation was one single player map that was pretty good, not really hard but it was fun. Imagine my smile when I later saw Johann's work in WoG with Mutare Drake's vacation.

Never uploaded any of them anywhere and that's a shame since I've lost them years ago. There's one particular 4 player XL map I'd like to have. But alas, lost!

That' the whole nature of the craft and I do think it crafting. There are so many things that can be done to make a new game experience. Some things I've tried they ended up misfires, like one time soon after I began making maps, I had 7 castles per faction in H3 but you coul only get one creature type in each<LOL> The game was like watching paint dry...very exciting The thing is it may have been possible to make it good wiht some serious tweeking

Resources are a mood thing to me. Sometimes a map is starving for them and other times they are everywhere and town-building doesn't even require getting mines<L>

Seems like I saw that sometime recently. So someone picked it up? that' cool. I am prolific at times at making the basic H3 stype maps in H5. If there were more modders and scripters active I could pass a lot on to them to use since it's the map skinning that i enjoy most

That's a good reminder to stop and "Back-up" isn't it? I've lost lots of maps when the new PC, became the old PC, and one day shot craps and of course, I had somehow forgotten once again the concept of backing-up my...work.

Johann's map was completely different one from mine, I never uploaded mine anywhere. He just had the exact same idea!

That would be a good reason to back up but who would have known you'd miss them after some years.

Oh, I see. I should have picked up on that already. I'm slow on the uptake at times.  Why no 'sharing' the maps? I ask only because I've not either...ever

Quote:

Well part of that was a 'community service,heads-up' as in "a reminder to all; to back-up" But you're right. Maps or game-saves would not seem important like pics, writings etc. but I lost those too. But then again, Elvin is sharing saves and SwampLord's is putting them to good use. Actually I am thinking now how silly that I did not back up maps like anything else since I've spent untold hours making the dang things. But, I do now and all esle.

RU interested in the coming H6-ME or are you done with mapping?
