So just as I was about to go to sleep when I stumbled upon this little piece of news...

Skyrim: Building Better Combat

Swords, fire and trolls!

As a huge fan of bioshock I really love this:
Quote:
Keeping in line with the philosophy of making the combat more tactile, Bethesda took inspiration for its spell casting from an unlikely source in Irrational Games' BioShock. Fighting his way through the city of Rapture, Howard was impressed with how Ken Levine's team visualized the power of the plasmids in your hands. They're adopting a similar approach for Skyrim.

Overall I think these news considerings the enhanced combat mechanics is the best news so far. The game on this screenshot looks awesome and I can help but being reminded of Dark Messiah, which it really good imo.
So freaking AWESOME that you will be able to dual wield not only weapons but also MAGIC!!

to me, WoW is not addicting at all

there is nothing at all which forces you to stay logged on WoW unless you raid

When I raided, it felt like a job. I had to log in like 4 times a week and wipe on a raid boss from 19:00 to 23:30. This caused me to leave that guild and I am no longer interested in hardcore raiding.

I play WoW, but honestnly feel no urge to play it all. I guess, I have become bored off it after so many years. Sure, Cataclysm is the best expansion they have done but... I have just lost interest in it.

I have been trying to find a new online game and tried WAR but seriously, the animations were rough and ugly and there were zero details to the terrain which just felt artifical. In WoW, the animations are so smooth and everything is so detailed despite the old 2004 graphics (which were improved with cata ofc)

This is the point of my post where I realized that I was turning this into a WoW thread. lol

Anyway, combat system sounds great and I was too reminded of Dark messiah. Dark messiah has the best combat I have ever seen in a game, I think. But looking at these screenshots or concept art there is just one thing that I see. Snow. Snow. Snow. Snow.
I just hope that 99% of the game wont be snow.

if there is something I hate both in games and IRL, it is snow
there is nothing positive about it

Anyway, putting up max damage in WoW certainly isnt easy with all things happening around you etc. Otherwise, the game would have been cleared out already and after over one month, there is still a boss alive that not a single one out of 12 million players have killed yet. In WotLK, it took 3 days for all bosses to die.

I imagine they're playing up the snow angle as much as possible right now to differentiate it from Oblivion in the minds of people following it; I'm sure there will be a great variety of areas in the actual game.

What catches my eyes most in that pic is the amount of detail on the character's arm.

Let's hope the faces and overall appearance of the characters are as detailed. Bethesda can do graphics sure, but they've had trouble with implementing that spark of life into their characters, making them believable.

Most of that lack of spark is due to their animations however. One need only look at Mass Effect to realize how much a well-made animation system can do for the immersion.

That troll looks really badass btw.

EDIT:

Quote:
Warriors who prefer the sword-and-shield approach can increase their defensive capabilities with shield perks that give them elemental protection from spells.

Perks? YEAAAAAH!

Seems they've made some changes in the Oblivion leveling formula.

Quote:
Once you successfully sneak up behind an unsuspecting victim, you can unleash a deadly blow with the dagger, an almost useless weapon in previous Elder Scrolls games that is receiving a major boost in Skyrim. “Now when you sneak up behind guys, the dagger does something like 10x damage,” Howard says. “I don’t know if we’re going to keep that, but you feel like you should be killing the guy if you’ve gotten that close and you have a dagger.”

Goodies for assassins

Hope they keep that.

Haha i couldn't agree more, I just hate snow...
But as long as they make it cool and have warm and cosy caves I'm glad

If they are going to have tons of snow, then I demand to be able to throw snowballs

Yeah I really hope you can change more then the facial appearance in Skyrim. Things like lenght, physical strength and hairiness should all be customizable in my opinion.

Damn that'd be epic.

See one of them trolls walking about
Goes into sneak mode and equips snowball
"Snowball Sneak Attack Critical on Troll! Troll is pissed off!"

Just for the humilation. Could even make a small minigame out of throwing snowballs at guards and trying to get away.

Yup this game has some serious potential.
I doubt that the initial game will have snowball throwing, but there will be MODS!
So no matter what Bethesda does, the game will most likely have snowballs in the ends.

Cyrodiil: Imperial province, home to a wide variety of races. Originally home to the Ayleids.
Morrowind: Dunmer
Summerset Isles: Altmer
High Rock: Bretons
Valenwood: Bosmer
Elsweyr: Khajiit

Closest thing to asian people would be some kinda elves I guess, maybe the Bosmer.

So it seems Jabanoss is here to deliver yet another pack of news concerning the highly anticipated game TES 5: Skyrim.

Interviewer:
So tell us Jaba, what news do bring this time?

Jabanoss:
Today good folks I'm here to bring words about the UI and a little bit about the customization, well why don't you just read about it yourself:

Inside Skyrims Menu System Overhaul

Everybody likes beautiful stars, right?

So apparently they seems to take a lot of inspiration from Apple when it comes to the UI, should be interesting to see how that turns out.
I really like that they put effort into that aspect as Oblivion in my opinion was rather bad interface-wise. It needs to be more smooth and easily accessible.

Quote:
Finally, pressing up in the compass menu turns your gaze up toward the heavens. In previous games, astrology played a large role in character creation. Though Skyrim abandons the class structure in favor of a "you are what you play" philosophy, Bethesda is preserving the player’s ties to star signs.

They are scraping the classes, <IMO> they didn't really fill any purpose anyway. Good that they still have the "you are what you play", if you are like Adrius and want experience you can always get mods anyway.
Quote:
Every time players rank up their overall level, they can choose a supplemental perk ability for one of the 18 skills. For instance, if you fight most of your battles with a mace, you may want to choose the perk that allows you to ignore armor while using the weapon. As in Fallout 3, several of the perks have their own leveling system as well, allowing you to choose them multiple times. Once you choose a perk, it lights up the corresponding star in the constellation, making it visible when looking up to the heavens while interacting in the world.

Skyrim seems to be getting perks, As long as it isn't too similar to fallout I'm glad. I like the fact that they seems to be tied to a specific school

Stay tuned for more news, and remember that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be in stores 11-11-11.

The good thing about the classic XP system is that it gives a really nice sense of sudden improvement, it makes you really feel like you're progressing.

The problem with Oblivion's system imo was -apart from the flawed leveled creatures- that since you leveled your skills so slowly step by step you never really noticed that you were actually improving.

The fact that they've added perks will most likely fix this problem quite elegantely. Things like the piercing damage perk for maces will most likely give you that satisfying sense of "holy **** I just went awesome".

So far the game just sounds completely awesome.

That pic reminds me of Bioshock's style btw... it's the font I think.
Ohh... look at that skill to the right of Alteration... "Enchanting"... interesting.

Actually I felt progression very clearly in Oblivion. First of because there a big difference between having acrobatics 25 or having 60, and I like the gradual progression as it feels more realistic.
And they had the "sudden improvements" because of the levels such as novice, journeymen, master and whatever. I mean to go from conjuration 48 => 50 was a HUGE difference.

But I agree with you a lot, the most important thing I think is the balance between certain skills. Things like Restoration and Athletics took ages to develop while other schools such as Alchemy and Conjuration just went up to master without thinking about.

Yeah enchanting sure sounds interesting!

Hmm wait a second, they said that there are 18 skills...
Well in Oblivion there are 21 skills. Now I know that they have removed Mysticism but if they have added enchanting, what have they removed?
I imagine that could have combined athletics and acrobatics or something.
Also Blunt & Blade => 1-handed & 2-handed
hmm...

if enchanting is like in WoW ((why did I originally write "one", i'm, not tired)), then you will destroy items you find and use the reagants made from those destroyed items to empower the items you wear

anyway

No not really imo. It was like "now I can cast this fireball that I had since level one but with 20 more damage, yay, too bad the creatures leveled too so now they all have 20 more HP!"
