2011: Dawn of the RPG year?

The number of role-playing games has been dwindling for the past decade, reaching but a scarce few every year. The major labels would give us at best 2 headstrong RPGs we could immerse ourselves into, else we would replay the very best of our own collections and relive the moments instead of searching for a brighter tomorrow...

Alas, the trend is seem to be stopping and 2011 will spark a great many different RPGs to suit the taste of most of the fanbase. With the dawn of Risen, Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 back in 2009 (though the latter was released just after the year ended), the zenith seems to be near: next year will recount the best harvest in a decade.

As per my knowledge, the year should presumably be divided into two parts, one starting with February/April, and the other starting with November/December. Bioware will hit the shelves twice of the two/three-month period with their two mega-products Dragon Age 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic? Being totally biased, I would totally choose the latter over the former but there is something that sparks curiosity within me about DA2 that seems to make me wanna test it out... Never stepping out of the fight CD Projekt's The Witcher 2 will be the third of the lot to step into the fight?

The summer will prove to be rather silent, unless the two top-of-their-club companies, Blizzard and Obsidian Entertainment will finish their projects and present them to the public. Yes, the classical RPG's antagonist Diablo makes its return in Diablo 3, wreaking havoc and spreading enough hellspawn to make you lose the count of the bodies you've slain, while standing tall beneath the shadows lies the kingdom of Ehb, the setting for both the widely known Dungeon Siege game and its newest installment Dungeon Siege 3? Information on both has yet to be disclosed as to whether we can expect them during that time period or not...

However, the silence may be all that is needed for the summer/fall period as fall will end with a thunderous roar: the turmoil in Skyrim never ends, as it usually does in Tamriel, and you will be the one destined to cleanse the land from the unrest in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. If such a dystopic land is not enough for you, then take one good look at the waning forces of Earth's last defence as Reapers solidify their upper hand in Mass Effect 3 - will Commander Shepard sacrifice himself to restore peace to the land and rid the galaxy of the no-longer-dormant abominable threat?

So, what say you, members of our community? Aye or nay? Are you waiting for any of these RP games? Or maybe you know of some other RPs that gained low media attention but will have enough firepower to take the throne? Let's talk!

Ahh nice summery of what is to be an awesome year. I really liked the way you lined them up for the year, I hope they come in that order with some good time between them.

What I want? that Dragon Age 2 comes in early March so I can play through it countless of times before H6 comes.
Then I want the best game ever to be made since warcraft3(maybe sc2), DIABLO III. It would really be perfect if it is released at the beginning of the summer Hahah oh yes!

And for my own good health and think it will very nice when The Elder Scrolls V:Skyrim is finally released so that I might allow myself to escape the world of Sanctuary.

Oh god I want this year now!

I have not played any other Diablo game, so Diablo III will introduce me to franchise. Hopefully there is some sort of trial, because I am not sure I really, really like those kind of games.

The most exciting thing is the new MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic even though I am just gonna say its a WoW copy in the end. xDDD
I can't wait to try it out, it looks really cool!

I don't think any Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts titles are coming out next year, so I don't think it's much of an RPG year.

Ehhhh, Final Fantasy was never my style.

I think it's gonna be a very good year overall; Diablo III alone will be quite awesome, even if it's not as "story-driven" as a lot of RPGs.

Now that I've gotten addicted to Bethesda open-world RPGs, I'm also quite looking forward to ES V.

YOU SUCK!
Well, now that I got that out of the system: Frankly the interisting titles tend to be completely unknown indy titles.
Diablo III will fail due gfx style.
Lore Rape V will fail because they rape lore.
Have not touched dragon age yet, no opinion.
Etc.................

Yes, next year is gonna be awesome! I got no real idea about when the games are going to be released, but I know which games I want:

Mass Effect 3 is of course at the top of my lists for expected titles, I simply can't wait to go out and conquer save the galaxy from the threat of AIs! I will bring order to the galaxy, even if I have to choke the snow out of it!

Second on my list of games is The Old Republic simply because: It's Star Wars, and its an MMO. Plus I loved the previous two games, so I'm pretty exited(I just hope there will be a 10-14days free trial mode before that, so that I might try the game).

After I've gotten my hands on these two wonderful pieces of art the only roleplaying game that I must have would be Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword that will be released next year(yes I count that as an RPG).

The rest of the games mentioned in this thread is things I will look into, but I'm not sure if I will buy anyone of them(except for Dragon Age 2, but I might not buy it for a looooong~ time, seing as I just got Dragon Age 1.

EDIT: Accidentally hit "ENTER"... will edit further with opinions on every game mentioned in this thread later.

EDIT: I've have never tried(or heard much about) The Witcher so The Witcher 2 is not so interesting for me. Perhaps if I knew more I would be interested.

The Diablo series is more of a del_diablo game(no pun intended, not my fault he named himself diablo), but he has managed to make me interested in the game at some point last year, so Diablo III might make my list of "games I will have to play at some point in time" but before that I will have to completed Diablo I & II + expansion.

Similar The Elder Scrolls series is also a typical del_diablo series and for a long time, I could not stand the series(mostly because of my bad experience with the first Elder scroll game and morrowind ending up being to easy because of cheat codes >.> So for a long time I was biased against the series. But now I decided to give it a new chance, and I found out that Morrowind, Oblivion and Daggerfall(I really should find it and download it to my new PC) was pretty fun games when I sat down and played them. I have yet to complete any of the three games, but I will try. But because of my lack with real experience with the Elder Scrollz series, The Elder Scrollz V: Skyrim is not really on my list of "games I will have to play at some point in time".

Dungeon Siege 3 - Ahh yes. The Dungeon Siege series. Yet another game series I have not really played, even if I have the first game(shame on me, I hear). Therefore I really have no real right to voice any opinion on wet or not I will get this game, but it is a interesting title which many people might be looking forward too.

So yes, this year will be very interesting with a lot of new RPs coming out. However as diablo mentioned - The best games are often the ones you've never heard about(with exception of BioWare games of course ;P)

Don't put words in my mouth.
I like Diablo 2 for its shadows, its gigantic piles of rubbles, its tons of dirty, and that tombs looks like forgotten tombs.
I dislike D3 for lacking the rubble, using the wrong shading tones, and it looks like somebody just went in and cleaned all the floors in the previews.
Don't forget the lack of light radius, one of the best GFX effects in the game, which is sorely lacking

Well, Diablo 2 sucked in design compared to Diablo 1 and still was a great game. Seriously, compare the music and atmosphere of Diablo 1 to Diablo 2... million times better, especially church (imho).

Sorry, but I didn't think I was putting words in anyone's mouth; all the hate I've seen directed at Diablo III is because of the coloring...

Does not surprise me, a lot of people think D2 got a fairly monotone palette, even thou it the opposite of the truth.
The main hatred is directed towards the drastic change in palette to make it look more like WoW, I guess haters will be hating that(I hate that one too, but it is a lot less serious than the lack of the rest).

A graphical change might still be possible; SCII got some serious overhauls following fan complaints that it looked off. When was the last time we saw serious gameplay footage for DIII?

I like the Diablo II style too but I like the style in Diablo I more. And to me Diablo III is more similar to Diablo I then Diablo 2 is to Diablo I, and the graphic in Diablo III so far very good.

However I can agree with you about the lack of rubbles and wrong shading tool. Don't really know whats with the light and color that I don't like, but there's something. Yeah they are missing a little with the rubbles, things that are easy to have in a 2D, but not as easy in 3D. They need more dust and dirt.

I could claim that Pokémon is a bit stock, but you could call me hypocritical considering that Final Fantasy's been recycling itself for longer than Pokémon and Kingdom Hearts is like a retirement home for old Final Fantasy characters with a few Disney cartoons thrown in.

Wasn't Final Fantasy XIII Versus being released sometime soon? Or like that Elder Scrolls V? I haven't been following the gaming scene for a while now.

Diablo 3 most probably will not come out.

Tes 5 will be a total failure unless they can make it more like Morrowind and less like Oblivion. ME 3 will create a lot of hype but will eventually fail for the hardcore gamers.

Etc.
