My H6 Dungeon line-up

The Dungeon- background

Banished to the underground world, hated and branded by the World Above- the Dungeon society is composed of outcasts, heretics and monsters. Ruled by the Warlocks- elusive magicians whose desire power above all else- and Overlords- ruthless warlords who were cast out from the world above due to acts of cruelty and betrayal- they field an army of hideous and powerful creatures, supported by possibly the most powerful offensive magic in Ashan. And back in the shadows, the enigmatic Faceless move the strings of their puppets and build the army which will engulf the world in beautiful, eternal Darkness...

Symbol: a lidless, reptilian eye surrounded by  a ring of tentacles.

Pros:

Dungeon creatures are generally more powerful than others of their level in all aspect, and many are resistant to magic or other specific forms of damage (such as morale-influencing abilities, Blindness and Poison). Dungeon also possess the most powerful direct damage spells out of all factions, further empowered by the Warlock's Shadow Magic ability.

Cons:

The Dungeon creatures are more expensive and less numerous than those of other factions, so every loss counts. Also, their Champion unit (the Ancient) is relatively fragile and needs the constant protection of their melee tanks (like the Minotaur and Hydra). Also, their healing and support abilities are extremely sub-par, and their buildings are expensive.

Creatures:

Core: Eyeless Thrall/Black Guard, Onyx Gargoyle/Shadow Gargoyle, Watcher/Beholder

Eyeless Thrall/Black Guard:

These hooded creatures- also called Troglodytes- carry wicked pole arms and wear thick robes and parts of evil-looking, spiked armor. Below the hoods, the few who had seen their faces and lived claim they are foul-looking and somehow reptilian, and have blank white tissue where eyes should have been. Imprevious to blindness and pain, but also dumb and unfeeling, they march under the flag of the Eye and compose the Warlocks' main fighting force.

Onyx Gargoyle/Shadow Gargoyle:

As a mockery of the Wizards' creations, the Warlocks had also constructed their own form of Gargoyles, alebit hideous and terrifying in form. Built out of the black stones of the underworld, they seem to suck the very light out of their surroundings.

Watcher/Beholder:

Another creation of foul magic, Watchers have a slick, semi-feline body but a hideous mass of unblinking eyes rather than a head. They shoot rays out of their eyes to inflict various afflictions on their enemies.

Elite: Minotaur/Minotaur Gladiator, Drake Rider/Dark Knight, Hydra/Abyssal Hydra

Minotaur/Minotaur Gladiator: The Minotaurs were recently freed from slavery by the Wizards, only to be re-captured by far crueler masters- the Dungeon Warlocks. Huge compared to humans and rivalling true giants in brute strength, only the powerful magic and cruel whips of their masters keep them from turning against them. Minotaurs are lightly armored to enable mobiltiy and carry massive two-handed axes and nets into battle.

Drake Rider/Dark Knight: Drakes are Dragon-like beasts native to the underworld. Some say in thousands of years they would grow to full-grown Dragons, but it is only a speculation. Younger Drakes are red-colored, but as they grow older and bigger their scales darken into almost-black. Tamed and ridden by some of the most wicked human warriors to serve in the Overlords' army, they are very effective aerial cavalry and destroy all in their path with blade and fire.

Hydra/Abyssal Hydra: Another hideous beast in service to the Warlocks, taken from the deepest lairs of the underworld. When enemies are softened enough by the agile Minotaurs and Drake Riders, the slow and heavily-armored Hydras close to wipe out entire armies.

Champion: Dominator/Ancient

A relatively lesser form of Faceless, the Dominators are still a force to be reckoned with. They are tall, humanoids beings, whose cloaks are composed of living whispering Shadow and wicked tentacles ending in mouths jut from their backs as a mockery of Angelic wings.
They are extremely powerful spellcasters, but fragile compared to other Champion-class units.

Not bad, very reminiscent of past Dungeons.  Though in H6 I don't think the Faceless should constitute an entire faction full of different creatures, much less the Dragon Knights.  They promised us something completely new in the world of Ashan, this is too similar to things we have already seen.

On the bottom line, it's pretty conventional, isn't it? Some people are probably gonna like that, but as I see it you basically took Heroes 3 Dungeon and substituted in some Heroes 5 creatures on appropriate tiers. Apart from the (pseudo-)Faceless, there's not really any new creatures in this line-up, are there?

My main comments would be:

- (Onyx) Gargoyles: I see you put Gargoyle back into Dungeon - but from what I read in your description, these will not replace Academy Gargoyles - is that right? I'm not sure I like Gargoyle in Dungeon, but that's a matter of taste - but I *don't* think the game needs two different gargoyles, it's simply not an interesting enough creature for that, if you ask me.

- Dark Riders: I don't think it makes sense that these are ridden by Humans. I mean, obviously you don't like the idea of a core race (which I think is a mistake, given the development of the game, but that's your call), but why Humans? Why not at least make it something new, even if this will be the only 'racial' unit of that faction?

- Dominator: I see you follow the lead from Haven's "minor angels" as champions. While I don't agree with UbiHole on this decision, I agree it's the logical choice to stay in line with the official game story.

An answer to comments

Well, besides the Faceless/Dominator all the creatures might be recurring creatures, but with new looks and abilities-

* Thralls are spooky, hooded beings (their entire body is hidden by the cloak, even their hands are covred with bandages). Their abilities are meant to withstand annoying conditions such as blindness and pain, making them an effective low-level tank.

* Gargoyles are somehow Draconic in shape (check out traditional European Gargoyles) and have anti-Light magic abilities. In my H6 version they actually replace the Academy Gargoyles (again- the fact a creature isn't part of a town's roster doesn't mean it doesn't exist anymore, like Ubi said) and Academy gets Winged Serpents/Coutals instead.

* Watchers get a cat-like body rather than being floating eyes. Their two tails also end with eyes. It's a new look on a familiar monster. They are ranged units with no melee penalty, whose attacks inflict random harmful spells on the enemy. The Beholder's melee attack also Blinds the enemy.

Elite:

Minotaurs: Become terrifying, hulking beasts (take four tiles), their fur and armor smeared with blood.
As well as being immune to negative morale, they can throw a net to ensnare their enemies and pull them to their axes.

Drake Riders: The humans who ride Drakes are would-be Overlords, who have to tame and ride them as part of their training. I think a single human unit is good in the faction, since most Warlocks and Overlords are humans after all. But, the rider is heavily armored so it can really be of any race. Their abilities are similar to Dragons-magic immunity (to 2nd and 3rd level magic) and fire breath. True Dragons become Boss units.

Hydra: I like the look of the dinosaur-like, armored H5 Hydras so I think a variation on that design is good. Their abilities are classic- area attack and regeneration, and I was thinking even Poison  for the upgraded version (but make them horribly slow and expensive).

Champion:

Dominator: Tall, robed beings with tentacles jutting from their back, their faces covred with creepy masks. Their abilities include the ability to sacrifice friendly units for mana (or perhaps only Thralls), a Confusion-inducing melee attack and very powerful offensive and cursing magic (like giving you an extra Warlock). Their weakness is low HP and defense, and average speed.

Now?

Anything but a BLACK DRAGON as the Champion unit of Dungeon is a total joke. Besides, Hydra must never, ever be less than a Champion (or probably a Boss)... Besides, I like the inclusion of Gargoyles, Minotaurs and Beholders in Dungeon, I have suggested them too in one of my past Dungeon line-ups. Your town lacks a Medusa - she must be there as the caster of the town.

Medusa

I was conflicted between Medusa and Watcher as the 3rd core unit (since the upg. version- the Beholder- inliftcs Blindness which is similar to Stone Gaze), but decided to go with the Watcher/Beholder since it fits more with the town's monstrous underworld theme. However, I was thinking about putting Medusa in a Fortress/swamp faction, which perhaps would look something like this:

Core:

Poacher/Headhunter (a Lizardman melee unit)
Firefly/Dragonfly (flier)
Medusa/Gorgon (ranged unit)

Elite:

Swamp Ghost/Loa (not undead- frog-legged, tiki-masked spirits of the swamp. Casters)
Wyvern/Monarch Wyvern (flier)
Naga/Serpent Queen (melee)

Champion:

Devourer/Ravener (a T-Rex!)

You did a great job in this faction but think hat both the minotaurs and the hydras are too much alike. They are both big creatures and tanks. I reccomend to make the Minotaur a small creature (I imagine the drake is also a big creature and it would be strange to have 3 big units in a single tier) and or downgrade it to core and put the beholder in Elite or chnge the Hydra in to a different faction like swamp.

Oh and that watcher really looks like an alien from ben 10 I saw once.this one

About Hydras and Minotaurs

The Hydra and the Minotaur have different purposes, even though they are both melee units. The Minotaur is all about offense- he is fast and deals heavy damage. The Hydra is a defensive unit, meant to soak damage while the heavy hitters (with the most damaging Dungeon units being Minotaurs, Drake Riders and Dominators) finish the enemy off.
About 3 big units in a single tier- I understand this, but the town is all about MONSTERS- and the Elites are the true monsters of the Dungeon, and should have the size to show this off. The Dominator is small, however.
